The UK Premiere Screening of “New Brow”

This looks like a really cool film. New Brow: The Rise of Underground Art is a documentary about the new brow/low brow/pop surrealism/graffiti art/street art/enjoyed-by-Juxtapoz art movements. The film made the rounds at film festivals in the states, and now next month is the UK premiere, thanks to London Miles Gallery.

London Miles Gallery is proud to host the premiere UK screening of Contemporary Art documentary, New Brow – The rise of Underground Art, a feature film presented by Humble Pictures in association with The Shooting Gallery from San Francisco, California. The documentary features some of today’s most influential and groundbreaking artists from the New Contemporary Art movement, such as Shepard Fairey, Ron English, Silvia Ji, Gary Baseman, Shag and many more, who speak openly and enlighteningly about the growing art movement and its origins. The documentary not only includes first-hand accounts from an impressive list of pioneering artists, but also showcases the important galleries and collectors who adopted, and continue to drive the New Contemporary Art movement today.

New Brow has been the official selection of the San Francisco Film festival, Rader Hamburg Film Festival, The Tulsa United Film Festival, The Hot Springs Film Festival and the Golden State Film Festival. New Brow premiered at the 2009 Golden State Film Festival where it received the second largest attendance behind a special screening of Star Wars, the Empire Strikes Back. It has been screened in cities across America and has made its way to Europe, Australia and now to London this February.

London Miles will be screening New Brow on Saturday the 20th of February at 4:00pm and the 27th February at 2:00pm and 5:30pm. Tickets are £8.00 and the film will be shown in the Project Room in Westbourne Studios, 242 Acklam Rd, London, W10 5JJ. More Wynwood Walls Progress and a Peek at O.H.W.O.W.

As you may have noticed, Seth and I have been spending most of our free time away from SCOPE (not that we’ve had a whole lot so far – see what we (Carmichael) and the other galleries were busy with yesterday) down the street at Deitch’s Wynwood Walls, where many of our friends are hard at work on their murals for Thursday’s opening (Nina, osgemeos and Finok haven’t stopped since they arrived). Here are some pictures of what Nunca, Aiko and Clare Rojas’ walls were looking like last time we checked.

We also paid a quick visit to Al from O.H.W.O.W. the other night. This is a cool space. Here are some set up shots.

Primary Flight Begins

Primary Flight begins!

It’s the eve of the official Primary Flight event and two seasoned veterans of street art took to the streets early. Around midnight Shepard Fairey and Ron English started making their mark on the neighborhood of Wynwood for the Primary Flight event.

Shepard Fairey will be doing his largest mural to date this year for Primary Flight. With a wall that is nearly 20 ft tall, and 200 ft wide, this monster wall will be finished over the next few days. During this night session he was visited by KAWS and Jose Parla who got a sneak peek of what was to come over the next few nights.

Ron English worked into the morning hours doing the prep work on his mural which will be approximately 30ft wide by 15ft tall.

These are only 2 of the nearly 80 artists that will be participating in Primary Flight.

Welcome to Miami

Seth and I haven’t even been in Miami twenty-four hours yet, but I wanted to quickly share a few of the things we’ve seen so far. There’s still time to buy a plane ticket if you haven’t already – this year is going to be one of the best yet and you don’t want to miss it. The piece above is by Nina, one of the artists participating in Deitch’s Wynwood Walls. osgemeos are beginning their work alongside her below (that’s Otavio in the pic).

Preview: Murals in Miami

This year the art fairs in Miami are going to be complimented with two massive mural projects.

First, the classic: Primary Flight came out with their promo video yesterday. PF have been doing a mural project in Miami for a few years, and their line up is a grab bag of awesomeness with artists like Ron English, The London Police, Logan Hicks and Revok. Here’s the video:

And then there is a the guy in town: The Wynwood Walls is a project by Jeffrey Deitch. The line up isn’t as expansive, but the names are all international superstars like Swoon, Barry McGee, Futura, and Os Gemeos.

There’s even a lot of overlap between the projects with artists like Shepard Fairey and Aiko painting for both groups.

Naturally, I’ll be there filming for Babelgum and taking photos for Vandalog.

Nike/Livestrong Stages hits NYC

Yesterday was the opening of the New York City leg of the Nike/Livestrong Stages exhibition which also had a stop in France. While some of the work was the same, there were some new artists in this show like Os Gêmeos. Arrested Motion was there and took plenty of photos.

The lineup for stages is full of some of the best artists in the world. José and Rosson Crow are two of my favorite artists who aren’t “street artists.”

Linking it up

Street art news seems to come in cycles, right now there is a lot of news coming in. Here’s a few highlights:

  • Sam3 has a new book out with Studiocromie and it looks great. More info at Feed Your Wall.
  • Shepard Fairey’s opening at the Warhol Museum looks amazing, but as Richard Lacayo points out, the AP case might have run into another snag for Fairey since the AP has countersued again on the basis that either Fairey only spent about 5 minutes “transforming” the photo into his poster or he is lying again and didn’t forget which image he based HOPE on. One thing Lacayo and the AP seem to have forgotten is that Fairey has a bunch of assistants. I don’t know how his studio functions, but it seems a fair assumption that Fairey sent his assistants a photo and they developed poster from there, or they gave him an already cropped photo based on his specifications and he went from there. It’s definitely not as simple as Lacayo is making it seem.
  • Elbow-toe still has a few prints left for sale on Etsy.com for only $30!
  • Anthony Lister has put up a beautiful new piece in Brooklyn.
  • Damon Ginandes has also been painting murals in New York.
  • This new video interview with Swoon is a must-see.
  • I missed this piece by Vhils inside the monastery at FAME Festival. It’s just too awesomely well-hidden.
