Weekend link-o-rama

Stinkfish in London

Is it time for another link-o-rama already? The week has flown by. Except for when I had to read the multiple formal press releases I received this week which promoted artists’ gallery shows by talking about a recent campaign of wheatpasting that they were doing solely for the purpose of promoting their shows. Bleh. By contrast, Stinkfish has been in London for a bit and just seems to be getting up with posters, spraypaint and other materials because it’s fun. Here’s some of the things I’m not going to be kinda bitter about this week…

This week: Boxi at Lazarides

Boxi looks to be the latest artist to join the roster at Lazarides Gallery. Time Of The Signs is his solo show open at Laz’ Rathbone Place location from this Friday. Ever since seeing Logan Hicks’ stencil work at Black Rat Projects a little over three years ago, I’ve been a fan of the hyperrealistic stenciling that artists like Hicks and Boxi use. It seems strange to have Boxi at Lazarides though. I like his work, but it’s much more meditative and calm and just less loud/pop than what Lazarides seems to be about. Now I’m curious if we’ll see anything completely new and out of the box from Boxi, something that fits more with what I’d expect at Lazarides. Sorry to ramble on a bit, but this show seems to me equal parts confusing and exciting. It opens on Friday and runs through September 1st.

Saner show coming to LA, with free artwork

Saner at Pictures on Walls in London

Saner, a Mexican street artist whose work was recently on the cover of the US edition of Street Sketchbook: Journeys, has his first solo show in LA opening on July 29th. That would be interesting, but probably not particularly special. What makes this show so interesting is that Saner will be giving away all the art from the show for free to members of the public. The show is called Sequestro Express (Kidnap Express) and this video has something to do with it. Sequestro Express will be taking place at LA’s Mid-City Arts from 8-10pm on the 29th.

Pics: Lush’s show in LA

Lush‘s LA show opened last week and it looks like he’s done it again. Some great pieces in this show making fun of street art and graffiti, specifically taking aim at Banksy and Keith Haring. Here are a few of my favorites.

Weekend link-o-rama

Gold Peg

Well, it’s been quite a week for me at least. Here’s what I wasn’t posting about while I was busy breaking up fights…

Herkaut installation at Onethirty3

Onethirty3‘s most recent exhibition – Herakut – opened it’s doors for one night only on Thursday. Both Hera and Akut had spent the week painting the space in Newcastle’s Hoults Yard which is fast becoming a hub for street art in the North East. The German duo’s work paid off, the walls looked incredible and a great night was had by all. The highlight for me was Akut’s photo realistic paintings which used the colours from the previous Paul Insect/Sickboy exhibition to enhance the work.

A Visit to São Paulo’s Choque Cultural

São Paulo’s Choque Cultural represents some of my favorite artists — whose work I don’t get to see often enough. Among them are Titi Freak and Daniel Melim.  Here are some Titi Freak pieces I discovered on my recent visit to their space in Pinheiros:

Although I had to return to NYC before the opening of Daniel Melim’s solo exhibit, I did get to see some of his earlier pieces:

An exhibit of Daniel Melim’s newest body of work opens this afternoon and continues through August 26 :
