Dr. Lakra in Copenhagen

To be honest, I’d never really taken much interest in or a good look at Dr. Lakra’s work, but when Henrik Haven sent me photos of Dr. Lakra’s recent show at Nils Stærk in Copenhagen, I’ve finally taken the chance to look at the work and I’m blown away. It’s no wonder he is in MoMA’s collection. The show runs through December 15th, but for those of us who cannot make it to Copenhagen, here are photos of a portion of the show:

Stikman in his splendor at Philly’s Stupid Easy Gallery

Partial view of Stikman installation at Stupid Easy, photo by Dan King

I discovered Stikman one fall afternoon back in 2007 while walking down Rivington Street on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. It was love at first sight. And from that day on, I began to notice him – sometimes alone and other times in the company of his fellow stikmen — in just about every neighborhood I frequented in NYC.  He also surfaced – to my surprise and delight – on my visits to Washington DC, Boston and Philly. In fact, he seemed to be just about everywhere in Philly. Sometimes he appeared on a sticker pasted onto a newspaper box or traffic sign; other times he was stenciled onto the pavement or simply hanging in one of his many fabrications, and often he was just lurking around a doorway or alley. But he always charmed me. This past week, I went down to Philly to check out Stikman 20.1 Celebrating 20 Years Hanging Around Philly at the Stupid Easy Gallery.

The show, a treasure for any Stikman fan – as well as for anyone who appreciates urban interventions — attests to the extraordinary skills and passion of Stikman’s creator.  From paper collages with 20 stenciled overlapping stickmen to ingenious installations in a range of media, the elusive artist has fashioned an extraordinary tribute to his and our beloved Stikman.  Here are a few more images:

The exhibit will continue for at least another few weeks — according to the folks at Stupid Easy. If you are anywhere in the vicinity, enjoy!

Ron English at Opera Gallery, show of the year?

So, I know that I haven’t seen too many shows in person this year, but of the ones I have, Ron English‘s Crucial Fiction show at Opera Gallery‘s New York location has to take the top slot. For most of the work in the show, Ron really does pop surrealism at it’s absolute best by creating pop-infuriated surreal scenes that draw you in and creep you out at the same time. The story behind Crucial Fiction is that the work is meant to be the result of a sort of dialog between Ron and his 8-year-old-self, the master now painting with impeccable technique what his childhood-self envisions. The paintings where this is most evident are some of the strongest pieces I’ve ever seen from Ron or any pop surrealist. Of the one piece in the show that was undoubtedly weak and out of place, all I’ll do is repeat what Caroline Caldwell once told me, “Glitter is the herpes of the art world.”

I’ve included a few photos here of some of my favorite pieces in Crucial Fiction, but Arrested Motion has a full set of photos from the show. Crucial Fiction is open now through November 29th, and it really is best experienced in person. And besides, I may not be the most trustworthy evaluator of the show since I went to the opening looking like this.

Ozmo and Jeremy Fish in Turin

Jeremy Fish

Jeremy Fish and Ozmo are showing together starting later this week at Galo Art Gallery in Turin, Italy with their two-man show From Lines To Shadows. Despite their work being quite different, when the two met back in Milan about 7 years ago, they clicked and gained a mutual admiration for each other’s work. From Lines To Shadows opens November 24th from 5:30-9pm.

“Wild At Heart” a Miss Van solo show

Miss Van’s upcoming solo show “Wild At Heart” will open this weekend at the Dorothy Circus Gallery in Rome. The opening reception will be on November 17th at 7pm and the show will run until January 20th. Definitely worth checking out if you happen to be in the area over winter holiday. And if you’re not in the area, Drago published a catalogue of works from the show by the same name.

Cash For

For those who have seen Cash4’s work on the streets, his solo show opening tomorrow presents a rare opportunity into the mind of the man behind the tags. The word play and puns seen in his stickers (Crash Floor, Cash IV, and so on) take a predominate role in his pop-inspired florescent paintings. These words of wisdom are paired with equally as humorous characters, some missing teeth while others roll their eyes at the nonsense they are surrounded by. If you were not fortunate enough to see his solo show earlier this year at Weldon Arts, this is an opportunity to not only see some astounding work, but to do so while hearing the premium tunes of Rap Gang, of which Cash4 is a member.

The press release:

On Thursday November 15, 2012 please join The Superior Bugout as it hosts the opening night of Cash4’s new body of artwork entitled CASH FOR…. Accompanying the artwork will be new sounds from the Cash4’s Brooklyn based hip-hop group Rap Gang.

The show will be on display at the Tender Trap through December 6, 2012 during hours of operation (4pm-4am).

Cash4 is a painter, illustrator, and architect based in New York City. Cash4’s fine art documents the American urban experience using simple iconography and colloquialisms (those often based on the New York Metropolitan area). Cash4 likes to see his work as bridging the gap between the naive disenfranchised hooligan street kid and the pretentious overzealous contemporary gallery artist.

The Superior Bugout (a Brooklyn based party aesthetic) has been curating art for Tender Trap since the Fall of 2012. The Superior Bugout seeks to bring a synergy of sight and sound, combining elements of the streets with contemporary sound visionaries.

Two show in the UK from Anthony Lister and lots of walls

Anthony Lister has a show opening this week with Lazarides / The Outsiders spanning both of The Outsiders’ locations (London and Newcastle). While in the UK for the show, titled Unslung Heroes, he’s stayed busy by painting a bunch of walls. They can all be seen, along with a few older Lister pieces, on Ian Cox’s fickr. Unslung Heroes opens on Thursday in both London and Newcastle.

A London solo show from Lucas Price

Lucas Price, perhaps best-known as Cyclops of the Burning Candy crew, has a show opening next month in London at Rove Gallery in Hoxton. T E A M Atlas will include new oil paintings and drawings from Price. For some sense of what Price does indoors, here are some photos from his 2009 solo show in London, although obviously that’s not particularly recent work.

T E A M Atlas opens December 6th at 6pm and runs through December 21st.
