Sorry this is coming a day late, but Thanksgiving and related activities took priority. Here’s what I missed posting about this week:

Roa and Resto collaborated on this wall in the Netherlands.
Peter Bengtsen has written some thoughts on a controversial Boris Hoppek product.
Invader has a solo show opening at Lazarides’ The Outsiders next week. It will include Invader-shaped waffles.
Dabs and Myla have designed a toy.
James Marshall aka Dalek recently had a show at Womb Gallery in Oklahoma City. Arrested Motion has photos and there’s a behind-the-scenes video as well.
On December 9th, Mighty Tanaka in Brooklyn has a group show opening with Robots Will Kill and other artists that they crew have selected.

Weekend link-o-rama

It’s 11/11/11, so I guess that’s a big deal to some people. That seems so arbitrary to me, since our calendar is pretty arbitrary to begin with. Besides, it’s really 11/11/2011. A few years ago, 11/02/2011 was much cooler. In my social sphere though, 11/11/11 seems like an excuse to throw parties, so maybe I shouldn’t complain. While I was thinking about the ridiculousness of this date, here’s what almost passed me by this week in art:

As pictured in part above, Nolionsinengland came across a well-preserved mural by Os Gêmeos, Nina, Same84 and Nunca in Athens, Greece.
LNY designed a couple of t-shirts.
I’m loving this “Occupy Your Mind” poster by EZRA.
Echo and The Bunnymen are a brilliant band and Will Sergeant is a fantastically talented member of that group. Unfortunately the same things cannot be said about his attempt at street art.
Last month, Ola Bad’s first solo show took place in Atlanta. It does not look like it’s his first show. It looks much better than any artist’s first solo show should look. There are a number of photos from the show here.
A tribute to Robbo has been painted on the wall where he and Banksy feuded. It looks like it’s by Banksy, but there’s been no word from his camp or any other artists claiming responsibility. Last we heard, Robbo was still in intensive care at a hospital due to the injuries he sustained back in April.

Weekend link-o-rama

Happy almost Halloween. It’s been a week of wasted energy, or so it seems. A potential legal wall that I was organizing has fallen through for the time being, but hopefully things are just delayed rather than cancelled. Here’s some of what I should have posted about this week:

Reported, this sculpture at Occupy London was made and left there by Banksy, but that claim is unconfirmed by Banksy so far. Nonetheless, Zeus added this modification to the piece. And Above has also made some work in solidarity with the Occupy movement. Similarly to K-Guy’s work at Occupy London, I’m conflicted here. On the one hand, it’s great when artists who know how to get headlines do so in solidarity with a political movement of sorts, but on the other hand these artists are of course latching on to the movement and associating themselves with it in a way that they know will get headlines and potentially help them sell some paintings. Of course the same could be said of many of the celebrity speakers who have been generally well-received at Occupy events. So there’s that dilemma to think about.
Faile are the latest artists to hit the wall at Bowery and Houston.
Last time I was in NYC, I saw this billboard for Hennessy cognac with designs by Kaws. Just interesting to see the flip from a decade ago when Kaws would have modified that billboard illegal to insert his work onto it in an effort to associate with the Hennessy brand, and now Hennessy pays Kaws to associate with their brand. Also, this new Kaws/Snoopy toy goes on sale today on Kaws’ website. Okay, one last bit of Kaws news: I love this new painting by him.

Weekend link-o-rama

This weekend I’ll be in Boston. If you have any ideas for what I should get up to, leave a comment. I’ll definitely be checking out Swoon’s installation at the ICA Boston. Here’s what’s been going on in street art while I’ve been locked in my room studying all week:

Steve Powers aka ESPO designed some beer cozies for The World’s Best Ever. They’re pretty okay, but should your beer cozy really be more than pretty okay? I would honestly feel a bit weird of my beer cozy had some brilliant high-brow design on it. Much more impressive is the latest in Powers’ Love Letter series.
Philips de Pury and MTV had a charity auction for MTV’s Staying Alive Foundation, with particularly nice work by Shepard Fairey and Faile.
Stik’s latest solo show just opened in London.
Some beautiful pieces by Sam3 in Porto, Portugal.
AvoidPi designed the latest cover of Showpaper.
Blu’s latest mural is in Greece.
A nice booth for Joshua Liner Galler at Pulse in LA.
Mr. Brainwash has a show opening soon in LA, but it’s going to be full of other people’s art. Anyone can submit work to be wheatpasted around the exhibition. On the one hand, yay, artists can benefit from Mr. Brainwash’s stupid fame and hype. On the other hand, I guess Mr. Brainwash has acknowledged that he doesn’t have any ideas for art, so he’s just openly benefiting from the art of others to further his own art career. So it’s mutually beneficial, except that individual artists submitting work will gain a lot less from this arrangement than Mr. Brainwash will gain overall.

I’m baking alive here in Atlanta for Living Walls, but damn things are coming along nicely. Nanook and Gaia have finished a couple of walls, including this one. But Living Walls is a busy event, so I’ve been missing out on a lot this week, including some big news from Banksy. Check all that out here…

The schedule for Living Walls is up and finalized. Festivities start tonight. If you’re in Atlanta, I hope to see you there.
El Mac’s painting of a cockroach is pretty crazy.
Channel4 in the UK has two films of note being shown this weekend: Banksy’s tv special Antics Roadshow (it’s about people behaving badly in public) and Graffiti Wars, which is that Robbo (get well soon man) documentary that people have been talking about for a while.
Art in the Streets had over 200,000 visitors.
Fine Art Views has an interview with Blek le Rat.
Retna, Kenny Scharf and Shepard Fairey painted the outside of a parking garage in West Hollywood.
New work from Phil Frost.
Nelio is quite cool.
Did you know that Futura made a rap with The Clash?
To coincide with Living Walls, the All City street art and graffiti mapping app is available for free all weekend.

Weekend link-o-rama

Were you at the launch of Very Nearly Almost on Thursday? Well we probably didn’t see each other, since I was out of there by 8pm! Damn jet lag. Dunno how it lasted so long. Anyway, I’m in London for the summer now. I missed a link-o-rama post last week, so here’s some stuff you should check out but haven’t seen on Vandalog over the last few weeks.

I plan to pick up this book on San Fransisco graffiti in the 80’s and 90’s.
Don’t Panic interviewed Kid Acne.
1000 swings are going to be installed across LA in strange places. Yes.
Speaking of 1000, Invader has placed his 1000th piece in Paris and has a show there soon to celebrate.
Street artists like Herakut painted murals in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
KAWS has some new paintings at Art Hong Kong.
Faile have brought their random cube paintings to a new interactive level with their Puzzle Box pieces. There are original “puzzle boxes” for sale where you can rearrange the cubes any way you would like, or you can try the puzzles out online or through an iPod/iPad app. Check it all out here.
This piece by Cyrcle and Chad Muska is either one of the most annoying pieces of so-called street art I’ve seen all year, or a very clever conceptual piece that still fails. Either, it’s an ad for some Chad Muska shoes trying to be street art, or it’s a commentary on the apparent double-standard that many street art fans (myself included) have when it comes to encouraging individuals to place art on the street but discouraging advertises from using the streets in a similar way to sell products. Problem is, if this is some conceptual joke (which I highly doubt), it fails like a lot of attempts at conceptual street art because it requires an artists’ statement or so much prior knowledge that it is extremely likely to be effectively be an advertisement for the vast majority of viewers, negating any conceptual/humorous basis for the piece. Or I suppose it’s both an ad for his shoes and a commentary on that double-standard, but since I don’t like wheatpasted ads, particularly those that try to pass themselves off as street art, well then I’m just upset about that. Stick to skateboarding Chad.

Weekend link-o-rama

Steph is here in Philly now and tomorrow Jordan Seiler, Gaia, and Marc and Sara Schiller will be here too. Pretty good week. Plus, Art in the Streets is almost here and I’ll be in LA for that. Hopefully see some of you there. Here’s some (Philadelphia-centric) news to enjoy over the weekend:

Some very clever yarnbombing on the Rocky statue outside of the Philadlephia Museum of Art. It’s a world-class museum, but so many people just go to see that sculpture and then leave.
Robots Will Kill have a show up at Vincent Michael Gallery in Philadelphia right now. While there’s definitely some filler in there, each artist has 1-2 standout pieces, making this worth a visit. The opening was pretty great, as it was full of teenage sticker artists writing in each other’s black books. Classic.
Agnès B now has a space for art in NYC. The opening looks like an overly-swanky affair, but there’s definitely some good art on the walls (and t-shirts from Bast. What could be better?).
This wall by Cranio is pretty cool. Yes, there’s some Os Gêmeos influence, but the shadows are all Cranio and who in Sao Paulo isn’t influenced by them?
The LA Weekly has done a long feature on Art in the Streets.

Alex Fakso for 55DSL

They’re not usually my favorite brand, but 55DSL have done a series of t-shirts collaborating with the photographer Alex Fakso as part of his latest photo project called FastOrDie, and they look pretty cool. A show of the 60 photos in FastOrDie is traveling around the world right now and you can check out the tour dates here. Here are some more of the t-shirts:
