All the cool things happen while I’m on holiday

This past week has been pretty crazy. I’ve been running around NYC seeing friends and art, and now I’m in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Unfortunately, the art world does not hit pause just because I’m taking a holiday. Here are some of the things I would have loved to cover on Vandalog if I’d had the time. And keep an eye on Vandalog tomorrow because I’ll be doing a big wrap up of Primary Flight.

Grifters now open

This show looks to be pretty good. The Grifters show at Lazarides’ Rathbone Place gallery opened on Friday, but I’ve been stateside and not had a chance to check it out yet in person. I’m particularly excited to see what Mark Jenkins and JR have done. Mark’s piece was a highlight of the Scope art fair in Miami, and JR never fails to impress me.

Grifters at Laz and a David Choe video

The crew at Lazarides have been busy. December 4th is the opening of their next show in London, and it’s going to be a biggie. The Grifters will have indoor work from more than a dozen artists including Conor Harrington, Lucy McLauchlan, Faile, Charlie Isoe, Mark Jenkins and Todd James and outdoor work from almost as many artists including Zevs, Mark Jenkins, David Choe and Vhils. Luckily, for those such as myself who will be away for the holidays, the show lasts until mid January.

Conor Harrington – Headless Heroes

Thursday night was the opening for Conor Harrington’s Headless Heroes show at Lazarides Gallery on Rathbone Place. The gallery was pretty busy, and as a few people pointed out to me, a number of attendees were people who rarely make it to other openings and are really just die-hard Conor fans.

As usual, Conor’s paintings combine graffiti, fine art, realism and abstraction.

Some of the best pieces weren’t canvases but the sketches and studies. In fact, I think it would be great to see an entire show of Conor’s studies.

Conor Harrington at Lazarides

I don’t know how I’ve neglected to mention this before now. Tomorrow night is the opening of Conor Harrington’s solo show, Headless Heroes, at Lazarides Rathbone. I’ve seen some images from the show and there are a few pieces that have caught my eye, but I’m curious what I’ll think after seeing everything in person.

Headless Heroes runs from October 30th until November 26th. Expect some photos posted after the opening.

Shows this week

I’ve got a few shows opening this week to highlight, most of them in London, one in Brazil.

Let’s start in Brazil. Sixeart has his first solo show in Brazil opening on Tuesday the 11th.

In 2008 the Spanish artist Sixeart achieved international fame by participating in “STREET ART AT THE TATE MODERN” in London, along with brazilian Os Gemeos, and Nunca,  french JR, united states Faile and italian Blu. Today his works are shown in Spain alongside those of Miró, Chillida and Tapies.

“Sueñan las gallinas con ser humanas” is series of 13 new pieces on paper made exclusively to be exhibited in ROJO®artspace Sao Paulo from 11.08.2009 to  05.09.2009.

And now back to London.

My Thursday evening starts off with a stop over at Lazarides‘ Rathbone Place gallery for Invader show ‘Low Fidelity’. There should be everything we’ve come to expect from the Parisian globe trotter: mosiac video game characters, rubix cubes, QR codes and even sculpture. Personally, I’ve always preferred the thrill of discovering an Invader on the street to seeing it in my home, but that hasn’t stopped me from buying one in the past. I’m curious, though not enthusiastic, about what this show will bring. Plus, everybody knows that Lazarides throws great opening parties.

Then it’s off to Pure Evil’s gallery for his solo show which mixes art and music.

And then maybe a stop over at Urban Angel for “The Sentiment of Love,” a show of erotic photography.

Friday night I hope to be back in Shoreditch for the launch of London Handstyles at Rarekind Gallery. Another London graffiti book.

Vhils book and print releases

And Vhils is back on top in my book. Man has he been busy. First, the work he’s done at Truman Brewery here in London. Then his work at the Fame Festival in Italy (photo above). Now, he’s got a super limited edition book being released and some new hand worked prints at Lazarides. In the gallery, prints are what I think Vhils does best, so a new print from him is always exciting to me. Here’s some info from Lazarides about the prints and his book:

As the hugely successful “Scratching The Surface” exhibition by Vhils (aka Alexandre Farto) draws to a close at our Rathbone Place gallery this Saturday, the action moves to our Greek Street Shop this coming Friday, the 31st of July, with the highly anticipated release of a rather special edition of our favourite Portugeezer’s first book and 3 new hand-finished prints for Lazarides.

Featuring a lazer-cut front cover, the full colour, 80 page, 28 x 22 cm, hard-back book ‘Scratching The Surface’ is also signed by the artist, is strictly limited to only 100 copies worldwide, and costs £45.

Vhils has also been hard at work hand-finishing 3 new prints for us, and we’re pleased to announce that we’ll be making available 10 variants of each edition to be displayed at our Shop on Greek Street from 10 am this Friday. Each print is from an overall varied edition of 30, measures 70 x 49.5 cm, is signed by the artist, and available to purchase at £350. Whilst both the book and prints can be ordered by calling the Shop on 0203 214 0055/0066, those buying in person have the advantage of being able to select their favourite version and take it home right there and then.
