Know Hope @ Carmichael Gallery

Know Hope Carmichael Poster

Know Hope is one of my favorite under-appreciated street artists. His images tug at the heartstrings. They are delicate in a way that not much street art is. I’ve interviewed him before for Vandalog, so if you haven’t read that interview, have a look.

Know Hope’s solo show at the Carmichael Gallery opens in two weeks, on June 4th. It’s an installation show called “The times won’t save you (this rain smells of memory)”. I’m disappointed that I can’t be in LA for this show.

Press release:

30,000 paper raindrops. 40,000 feet of fishing twine. 2,500 fishing weights. Hundreds of sheets of cardboard fashioned into miniature works of art and a crowd of life-size cut-out characters. Incorporating all of the above ingredients and more for his debut Los Angeles solo show at Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art on June 4th, 2009, Israeli artist Know Hope invites you to literally step inside one of his artworks for a visual experience unlike any you have ever encountered and one you will never forget.

“This exhibition holds nothing but a reflection of where we are now, and offers us nothing but the suggestion of adaptation and (re)adjustment to the current tides.  This is a binding burden, and we’re all in this together.”
– Know Hope

Know Hope will be in attendance at the opening reception of “the times won’t save you (this rain smells of memory)” on Thursday, June 4th, 2009 from 7.00pm – 10.00pm. The exhibition will be open for viewing through Thursday, July 2nd 2009 from 1.00pm -7.00pm. Please contact art@carmichaelgallery.com to preview available work.

Shows I Forgot to Mention (California Edition)

Yesterday I did what I thought was a moderately extensive post on some of the cooler shows opening soon or recently opened, but I realize I missed California completely. Here’s a few things you can go see if you’re in California and looking for some street art:

First, there is The Carmichael Gallery. While their Boxi and Neo-Cons/Zeus shows are still up until the 30th, I’d like to write about what they’ve got opening on May 7th.

In the main gallery, Thais Beltrame has a solo show.

Beltrame

And in their rear gallery is “Get Rich Quick!” GRQ is a show full of secondary market work from top-tier artists like Banksy, Barry McGee, KAWS and Faile.

Get Rich

I know nothing about the show in this next poster except that it is in San Fransisco and Know Hope is involved. That’s good enough for me. Love his work.Needles

Great In ’08: Know Hope Says…

As part of Vandalog’s “Great in ’08” series, which will be running every day for the rest of the month. Check out previous posts here. Street artists from across the world have been given one post to give away to one artist who they feel has been doing great work recently. Today will be the last day of the series (Yes! Accidental perfect timing), and Know Hope has been given the chance to close it out.

Know Hope: I’ve met so many great, talented and dedicated artists in the past six months. lots of amazing art was seen and getting to know and work with them was definitely inspiring. until now, I hadn’t been used to traveling as much, so these were good times. since this is supposed to be a ‘gift’ to an artist I think has done good work the past year, I thought that instead of a gift, it would be cool to use this submission more as a ‘toast’, to close this year and start the new one, a documentation of a moment. so at the risk of sounding PC and/or like a fuckin’ hippy; this is for everyone out there doing their best with what they got, the new and old friends and everybody fightin’ the good fight.

Great In ’08: Mike Marcus Says…

As part of Vandalog’s “Great in ’08” series, which will be running every day for the rest of the month. Check out previous posts here. Street artists from across the world have been given one post to give away to one artist who they feel has been doing great work recently. Today it’s Mike Marcus‘ turn.

Who is one artist doing really great work right now?

Mike Marcus: Oh shit! Thats a tough question. I don’t think that I would be able to answer with just one name.

In Israel when I was asked that by journalists, I invariably mentioned Know Hope. I still think that he is doing beautiful, touching work. It really comes unfiltered right from his heart. It expresses his vulnerabilities, fears and passions although I do think that he has become a little less diverse as his commercial success increases. He’s a totally lovely person too.

When I was in NYC I was unexpectedly blown away by Revs. He is an artist that I never bothered really thinking about (probably because of his graffiti roots) but when you see his stuff in the context of the city you realise that he is making the rules that others follow. His work is monolithic yet personal, really exciting to stumble upon.

In London I really like what Paul le Chien is doing. I think that its early days for him and his work already shows fantastic promise. He doesn’t give a fuck (go on, publish the word fuck – you know you want to 🙂 ) about the stylistic conventions that street art seems to be developing. He mixes blatantly homoerotic subjects with well crafted tattoo-art inspired backgrounds. I think that over the next year or so he will start adapting his work to fit better with the street medium and spread out away from Soreditch into other parts of London. I would like to see him go big too.

Can I mention Hera too because she’s cute? 🙂

Great In ’08: Cake Says…

As part of Vandalog’s “Great in ’08” series, which will be running every day for the rest of the month. Check out previous posts here. Street artists from across the world have been offered one post to “gift” to one artist that they feel has been doing great work recently. Today it’s Cake‘s turn.

Who is one artist doing really great work right now?

Cake: My answer would be Know Hope.  Complete openness and honesty presented in a vulnerable and humble form so that we can all relate to it and not be scared off by it. Know Hope creates from a place of sensitivity and openness and he is one of my favorite artists right now without a doubt because I can actually experience his work beyond its form and I am able to feel it’s emotions.  And I always end up feeling good and at peace.

Know Hope Updates

Couple of bits about Know Hope today. First, he’s got an interview over at Artasty, so check that out here. Second, he’s just posted a new piece on his flickr which is very timely.
