This Friday, Herakut will be having their first solo show in Germany. Somehow, these two talented artists have never had a solo show in their home country before this. The show will be in Düsseldorf at the new Galerie Springmann-Varol, which has just finished their first show (a kickass JR solo). Definitely something to check out if you’re in the area.
It’s been a long time since Seth and I have had a group show this big at Carmichael Gallery – there will be over 35 artists represented on the walls when we open “Booked” on Saturday, June 5th! Some of the artists we’ve worked with for several years and others we’ll be showing for the first time. We’re also going to have lots of great art books and magazines from publishers like Drago, Gingko, Studiocromie (I really enjoyed opening up the box of Blu and Sam3 books!) and VNA. Books and art are two of the best things in the world, in my opinion, so it should be a fun event! We will be open from 12-8pm on Saturday for Culver City Art Walk (make sure to visit all the other galleries on the block if you come by; there will be lots of cool things to see) and the reception itself is from 6-8pm.

Pedro Matos has a solo show opening on June 4th at the Montana Shop and Gallery in Lisbon. Should be interesting. Pedro’s piece for Art Stars really impressed me, so I can’t wait to see what he’s painted for this show.

Montana Shop&Gallery Lisboa is proud to present Reality Show, a solo exhibition of new works by the Portuguese young artist Pedro Matos. The exhibition will feature a new series of oil, acrylic and aerosol paintings on canvas, as well as two site-specific gallery installations thought to make the connection between Pedro’s work both on the street and gallery.
Pedro has been developing a body of work focusing on his concerns about people and their values, about society and the human condition. Although aesthetically influenced by a mix of the old masters, the religious subject matter have been replaced by the portrayal of those who are downtrodden, unnoticed, unappreciated and forgotten. His work also shows a post-graffiti sense of beauty found in the decaying and abandoned surfaces and places. This same sense of beauty and aesthetics is also found in the subjects that Pedro chooses to portray.
Pedro started painting at the age of 16 (2006) completely self-thaught and began by showing his work in small local venues. Simultaneously, Pedro pasted up original charcoal drawings, first in the streets of Lisbon and then around Europe.
This June California’s Thinkspace Gallery will be teaming up with the UK’s very own London Miles Gallery for what promises to be a ground breaking group exhibition. Righteously titled The Next Generation; the exhibit will feature a 45 strong selection of international artists from the burgeoning New Contemporary Art movement. The London Miles Gallery will be housing a number of works of art from a fastidiously handpicked selection of emerging and established artists as it aims to bring the best new international talent to the doorstep of London’s Contemporary art community.
The Next Generation opens on June 11th (7pm to 11pm) and will be on view until July 4th.

Lazarides LA newest show – EuroTrash sets up a stellar line up of some of the hottest European artists around right now. Using the overlooked, misunderstood and mundane elements of everyday life, EuroTrash aims to captures its audiences attention with the distinctive style and alternative approach that artists JR, Conor Harrington, Antony Micallef and Vhils bring with them. Sharing a vested interest in their individual and collective surroundings and society, they poetically express a desire for universal appreciation – despite the tacky connotation that is usually associated with the term “Euro Trash”.
Frances very own JR (seen above) is known for immersing himself within cultures where struggle and conflict are rife. He presents his monochromatic photographs, often over 20 feet high on unconventional exhibiting arena’s to highlight humanist matters that are often overlooked. Cork born painter Conor Harrington (seen at the top) on the other hand, goes against the grain of the fast pace of graffiti art preferring to opt for the slower process of oil painting. Interested in opposing elements, illusion of power and the emotional side of masculinity, soldiers and conquerors exist within Conor’s colorful and abstracted landscapes, yet never forget his street roots.
London based Antony Micallef’s (seen above) energetic work both celebrates and despises contemporary society. The world portrayed by Micallef is one of contradictions as Barbie becomes the Virgin Mary adorned with a Chanel necklace and cutesy paraphernalia, Angel’s wield guns and Soldiers wear flower power printed uniforms. Portuguese artist Vhils (seen below) works with manipulating surfaces, whether it is the brick façade of buildings with masonry equipment or layered fly posters that he peels away, he transforms these varying planes to reveal mystifying, striking portraits that explore a cities dimensions
Hailing from the Windy City, Pose made his first attempt at graffiti in 1992. Since then he has added a multitude of contributions to the Graff game and set out to conquer every medium visual art has to offer; on and off the streets. Pose and photojournalist KC Ortiz recently teamed up to combine two of their exhibits at Known Gallery. Check out some photos from the show below!

There are a few little bits to mention today about my friends in Burning Candy. The crew have been keeping pretty busy lately.
Yes. Armsrock has a solo show coming up in London. This is going to be fantastic. Except, for some reason, it sometimes feels like I’m alone in thinking that Armsrock’s work is brilliant. Hopefully this upcoming solo show will change some people’s opinions. Drawn Towards the Present opens at Signal Gallery on June 3rd.

The Danish artist Armsrock, is one of a handful of artists on the Urban/Street art scene whose work reaches out beyond the confines of the genre. The quality and unique nature of his work, both on the street and for the gallery, has made him stand out in that talented crowd.
Armsrock’s work consists of delicately drawn figures, which he pastes on walls in urban settings. Mostly life-size portraits of humans on the edge of society, the character and placement of these pieces make them feel, sometimes, as if they have been tattooed to the wall. At other times, they can appear transitory – as if they had just arrived at a scene and are about to move on. More recently, he has developed an analogue projection technique that enables him to combine his magical drawn figures with light. This has the effect of making the images even more fragile and fleeting, almost like ghosts.
His new show in Signal Gallery is called ‘Drawn Towards The Present’. The show will be built around an installation that will consist of monumental charcoal drawings on rice paper. The imagery represented in the drawings is based on press-clippings from the artist’s archive, which have been reworked to create a fragmentary representation of contemporary history and a glimpse into our future hopes and fears.
Armsrock, was born in 1984 in Copenhagen and graduated at the Hochschule Für Kunst in Bremen, Germany. The quality of his art has been recognised internationally and has been seen in streets and public spaces across Europe and the United States. He has also shown his work extensively in traditional art institutions, such as museums and galleries. This is a young artist whose passion and commitment to his craft has won him supporters and buyers wherever he has shown his work.
Unfortunately, I’m going to be in Italy when this show opens, but I expect it’s going to be quite something to see. And make sure to get down to the gallery quickly, because the show only lasts from June 3rd until the 19th.
This week marks the opening of Os Gêmeos‘ latest museum show, Pra quem mora lá, o céu é lá at Museu Berardo in Lisbon. Lucky for all of us not in Lisbon, Target was there to take plenty of photos.
While I was still very happy to see the work they had at their recent show in Milan, a lot of people I spoke with subsequently said they were disappointed with the work there. Now I see why. Pra quem mora lá, o céu é lá is really what a proper Os Gêmeos show looks like. In short, it looks amazing. It’s not at huge as Vertigem, but it’s the next best thing. I already know people planning holidays around this show after seeing these photos. I wish I could do that too. If you’re in Lisbon between now and September, this is something that cannot be missed.
Don’t ask me why Os Gêmeos’ artwork is so good, I don’t know. Just have a look and hopefully agree.

It looks like Charming Baker’s current solo show Stupid Has A New Hero at NY Studio Gallery has put Baker at the forefront of the New York art scene. The Telegraph reports that there were about 1000 people at last week’s opening, the show sold out almost instantly and buyers included art-world heavyweights like Alberto Mugrabi (a mega-collector and son of mega-collector Jose Mugrabi) and Damien Hirst. Well, whatever. The important thing for those of us without the £16,000 to buy an original is that the paintings look great as usual and the show is on through May 29th.
