Three events in Miami that you don’t know about

There is so much going on next week in Miami, that some events are bound to be lost in the sea of parties and paintings. I’ve recently come across a few events lesser-known that have gotten me pretty interested.

1. ART BURN: The Most Combustible Art Show in the World

ART BURN, the most combustible art show in the world, will combine an international selection of original art with fire. Original works on canvas, wood and paper by a selection of more than three dozen international artists will be displayed and then flambeed in Miami on the evening of Thursday, December 3, 2009 at sunset. The exhibition/grilling, curated by NYC artist El Celso, will take place in the Wynwood Arts District, within walking distance of Miami’s lesser contemporary art fairs.

An exclusive selection of more than three dozen exceptional pieces by the hottest renowned artists and sizzling, cutting-edge newcomers will be displayed from 1pm until sundown. After the brief exhibition, all of these original works will be burned for the public’s viewing pleasure. Nothing is for sale.

Total Rewall

rewall

If any graffiti writers actually get involved with Total Rewall, it will be emmensely interesting, but that is a big if and by no means guaranteed.

The press release:

TOTALREWALL is bringing photography into the world of graffiti, by giving artists and creative types alike, for one week only, a rare chance to work their magic on otherwise forbidden territory.

The thirty-two TOTALREWALL photographers will be posting up giant photographs on the walls of the famous Leake Street Tunnel in South London. Each image represents the individual photographer’s concept of walls and surfaces capital that are out-of-bounds to street artists, graffiti writers and creative types of every calibre.

An open invitation is extended to everyone who feels they would like to contribute to the
project by stenciling, spraying or drawing on the in a way that adds to or the changes the original image. Notwithstanding that, visitors are also welcome.

Our event will start on the 4th of December 2009 at 7 pm and end on the 10th of December.

Grifters at Laz and a David Choe video

The crew at Lazarides have been busy. December 4th is the opening of their next show in London, and it’s going to be a biggie. The Grifters will have indoor work from more than a dozen artists including Conor Harrington, Lucy McLauchlan, Faile, Charlie Isoe, Mark Jenkins and Todd James and outdoor work from almost as many artists including Zevs, Mark Jenkins, David Choe and Vhils. Luckily, for those such as myself who will be away for the holidays, the show lasts until mid January.

As a little preview, here’s a video of David Choe from Walrus TV:

Graffiti R.U.A.

Mexico at POW

fiesta_fly

I am very excited to go to Miami in December, but I am also epically disappointed to be missing this show at the new Pictures on Walls. I don’t know Smithe but Date Farmers and Saner are great and it’s something completely different from most of the UK scene. Londoners had better go and take loads of pictures for me.

This may also be a sign of things to come for POW. Their new open-but-not-really-officially-open gallery-but-really-shop-but-really-just-an-office space on Commercial Street could become a meeting point and hang out spot for the London street art scene, like Ad Hoc Art was in NYC. It could become a gallery, a shop, a print studio, whatever! I’m hoping for something like a print shop and occasional gallery.

Shades of Things To Come

This show looks pretty cool. There’s Tizer, Probs, Nychos and more. See you there.

Kelsey Brookes Gets Bigger, Brighter, Bolder

Kelsey Brookes

Don’t think Kelsey Brookes‘ new show, Bigger, Brighter, Bolder has been mentioned here yet. It opens Friday, November 20th at Quint Contemporary Art in San Diego. Kelsey’s both a great artist and a lovely human being so I’m really looking forward to spending some time with him and seeing these pieces, which look awesome in these progress pics, in person.

De dentro pra fora / De fora pra dentro

MASP

I’ve really been enjoying watching this beautiful installation take shape at Museu de Arte de Sao Paulo (Masp) recently. Curated by Choque Cultural, it features Titi Freak, Zezão, Stephan Doitschinoff, Ramon Martins, Carlos Dias and Daniel Melin, a list that includes some of the Brazilians I’m most excited about these days. Entitled De dentro pra fora / De fora pra dentro, the exhibit opens this Wednesday, October 18th.

Photos from Neckface: Devil’s Disciple

I haven’t seen too many pictures from Neckface’s solo show Devil’s Disciple at OH-WOW Gallery in Miami. Neckface is so absurdly underrated here in the UK and I just don’t know why. Like David Choe, he does a great job of proving that just because an artist paints with water colors, it doesn’t mean they have to paint something that looks pretty. But with this show, Neckface seems to have taken steps forward and made serious sculptural works. Awesome. I hope you like these pictures as much as me.
