Jack Whitehall Takes on Banksy

Apparently Jack Whitehall doesn't like free publicity, because there are no photos on his website without substantial watermarks. So instead of a photo of Jack, here's a photo that we could get the rights to publish without watermarks: A horse's behind.

Last night on British comedian Jack Whitehall‘s new variety show Hit the Road Jack, the rising star took on the biggest street artist of them all – Banksy. Taking place in Bristol, the show made fun of the west country, but of course could not ignore the masked street artist’s legacy in Bristol. Pretending to be Banksy, Whitehall (or another artist thanks to the wonders of editing) spray painted an erect penis on the side of a house and the words “this pub is bullshit” on the side of a Bristol pub. Claiming that the angry home owner and pub manager respectively should be happy with the addition of Banksy works on their buildings, he also added that it’s ok “I’m Banksy, I can do what I want.” Even though the skit was taking the piss, the phrase still rings true. Banksy does really do what he wants.

Counter-productive street art

Update: This post is factually inaccurate. As it turns out, Jeice2 did not wheatpaste this poster to the shutters. Instead, as I suggest in the article might be a kinder alternative, he actually taped it to the wall temporarily, took a photo and then removed the poster. If you look very closely at the edges of poster in the above photograph, you can see the tape. I am keeping this post up because the concern that street artists often do not respect graffiti is still generally valid, even if it is not valid in this example.

Sometimes I wonder why so many graffiti writers have such a negative view of street art. And then I see pieces like this by Jeice2 and remember at least one of their reasons: The lack of respect that young street artists often have for graffiti. This poster by Jeice2 is not bad. Clearly he’s spent some time on it. Okay, it’s not amazing or particularly unique, but it will probably look pretty cool in person while it is fresh.

There are two problems though:

  1. It’s a wheatpaste on a shutter. If that shutter opens regularly, the paper may rip and and look a lot worse very quickly while still taking up lots of space on the spot.
  2. Jeice2 seems to have gone over as many tags (and possibly throw-ups) as he possibly could.

What Jeice2 seems to have done is put up a piece over a bunch of other work without any consideration for those writers, and it’s a piece that will quickly look terrible. Since the primary audience for the pristine piece seems to be the internet, maybe Jeice2 should have just taped his poster to the shutter, taken a photo and then removed it, leaving the graffiti undamaged and visible.

It’s difficult to do a piece that large that isn’t going to cover at least one tag, but surely there was at least one more appropriate spot in all of Seville for this poster.

It’s mistakes like this one by Jeice2 that give street artists a bad name among graffiti writers.

I hope that next time Jeice2 will pick a more respectful spot for his work.

PS, Some people may wonder why I am pointing this out while I have (mostly) defending Banksy’s initial piece in the Banksy versus Robbo feud. The difference that I see between Jeice2 and Banksy versus Robbo is that Banksy actually brought way more attention to Robbo’s piece, Banksy’s piece interacted with the graffiti already on site and Robbo’s piece was tagged over a lot already. But I imagine a lot of people don’t see that same distinction. That’s fair enough and only furthers my point that graffiti writers see street artists as often being disrespectful to graffiti.

Do we need a “Go Bombing Day”?

Bomit‘s latest potential project is Go Bombing Day, an attempt at developing an organized day for getting up. In the UK at least, Christmas is already an unofficial Go Bombing Day for writers, but it’s not an organized event and it’s not global. Bomit’s hope is that a more organized Go Bombing Day could encourages artists around the world get active and also acknowledge the great artists who have been instrumental in the development of the street art, graffiti and stickering communities. Bomit is already promising free paint and asking for official participants who will paint on this yet-to-be-determined date and put the words “Go Bombing Day” in their piece. So, is Go Bombing Day a good idea?

Personally, I’m not sure. On the one hand, it would be great to get people out en masse putting up work. More art = good. Maybe it’s that simple. Shouldn’t it be? The event could be the precursor to a number of mini-festivals around the world, sort of like Meeting of Styles. But and organized Go Bombing Day may also mean that artists getting up on that day get enveloped by a sort of brand, even if it’s a noncommercial one. Go Bombing Day might encourage non street artists to paint their first walls, but it may also encourage people to get out and paint that first wall purely for the sake of self-promotion, already a concern in the street art community.

But what do I know? I wouldn’t be a participant in Go Bombing Day anyway. What do the artists think? Let us know in the comments.

That was a long week. But at least it was a fun one too. For one thing, Jill Cohen was in town for a show at my university. Definitely have a look at her drawings. That’s some crazy skill. Here’s the art news I’ve been reading:

  • Col has a show coming up very soon at Orchard Windows Gallery in New York.
  • Shai Dahan, Ollio and Ekta got together to paint in Sweden.
  • Roger Gastman has directed an upcoming film about the earliest modern graffiti writers (is that term a contradiction?).
  • Shepard Fairey’s latest print is called Eat The Rich. I hate to be the one to call him out on this one since many will understandably perceive it as hypocritical of me, but can a millionaire artist really legitimately make that statement? I know he is a hard-working guy who has been at this for decades, but then the proper time for that rhetoric was 20 years ago. Not when his art sells for hundreds of thousands to millionaires and his overpriced t-shirts are found in the fanciest clothing stores. Plus, the man is a committed and unashamed capitalist. Thoughts? Maybe he is just using the phrase as an example of a culture he is interested in, rather than as part of an intended propaganda poster?
  • The Vacuum Cleaner is hilarious!
  • Agents of Change members Remi/Rough, LX.One, Steve More and Augustine Kofie painted what may be London’s largest mural just across from King’s Cross.

For me, this week was spent thinking way too much about the digital humanities at Re:Humanities. You may be asking what that is. I’m still not entirely sure, but I think it means using YouTube and Twitter to learn important stuff rather than to watch laughing-baby-related videos and talk about the last hamburger you ate. So I’ve been working a lot lately on Re:Humanities, a symposium of undergraduate work in the digital humanities. It’s taking place next week at Swarthmore College, just outside of Philadelphia. Geo Street Art iPhone apps launch + Street Art NYC

Geo Street Art launched two iPhone apps this week for locating street art in NYC and London. The Street Art NYC and Street Art London by Lois Stavsky (also a Vandalog blogger) and Griff respectively. Basically, the apps are street art guides to individual cities with both hundreds of currently running pieces and historical data and bios of artists you might come across. Lois and Griff are out hitting the streets all the time, so these apps actually have a good chance of staying up to date. Similar iPhone apps have often relied on crowdsourcing their data and that’s not a bad idea, but maybe it’s time to try putting a small monetary incentive behind the work of keeping a street art map up to date and relying on experts. Each app costs a few dollars and since I’m not in either city right now, I haven’t purchased them myself, but the screenshots definitely make the app look quite professional and the map in NYC already includes over 400 active locations to spot art.

In conjunction with the app, Lois has also started up a new blog, Street Art NYC. If you love Lois’ posts here at Vandalog like I do, I highly recommend checking out Street Art NYC.

The Geo Street Art apps are available in the App Store now.

Hopefully this project will finally result in up-to-date maps of interesting street art, something I’ve been interested in seeing for years.

Judith Supine Does PFW12

 

India based designer Manish Arora took to the streets as inspiration for his debut collection of ready to wear at Paris Fashion Week. The clothes featured superimposed images of Judith Supine‘s famed work throughout the collection. Created to look like a high end city street, the catwalk was transformed with the help of several Parisian graffiti artists who spray painted their colourful tags.

While many artists are turning to clothes to sell products to the mainstream (hey we have Labrona creating shirts for us), it is interesting to see the fashion world turning to street artists to sell expensive wares to women. While Judith Supine may not be a name that most fashionable will be familiar, they certainly know that prints are in this season (yes this is my girly side showing). Most importantly however, it is evident that Supine’s work translates well into clothing. We already know that Shepard Fairey, Miss Van and Keith Haring all know how to make street art fashionable, but few artists besides Supine have translated their works into catwalk worthy creations.
