Protesting buff laws in Sao Paulo

Some news from the street artists of Brazil:

Last Sunday one of the biggest avenues of São Paulo, Av. 23 de Maio, received the biggest graffiti and street art attack ever. All the action was illegal and was done by 150 artists during the day on 1km of a grey wall. The protest is against the government buff of the Law “CITY CLEAN”. There were artists from all ages and styles, because the most important thing was to paint all of the avenue. You can see amazing graffiti works (character and letters) and works made by artists that were doing their first work. The variety of styles includes pixação, stencils and much more. The action was incredible and the cops arrived there and didn’t know what to do, so they only took 9 graffiti artist (only 3 police cars) to the police department to try to understand what it was that. The authority understood that was an art-manifestation, so the artists could go home. The government is now painting the wall with grey paint as they usually do every week.

News I missed while in Stavanger

Most of what I was posting while away in Stavanger for Nuart was prewritten so that I could focus on the festival. The downside being that I missed a bunch of cool potential posts over the last few days. So here’s my usual post holiday link wrap-up:

  • Sam3 has a new video animation out (Via Wooster Collective). You can watch it on Vimeo. Oh and on a related note, the first pieces on loan from collectors for The Thousands arrived at my house this weekend, including a piece by Sam3.
  • Also from Wooster Collective is a new piece by Mark Jenkins. A sculpture of a person made of newspaper.
  • JR released this video about the women who were involved with his project in Kibera, Kenya (Via unurth):
  • Juxtapoz has details about Woodward Gallery Keith Haring show in New York City (which opened September 12th)
  • Another photo has been released for Adam Neate’s October solo show at Elms Lesters (via Arrested Motion). “A New Understanding” opens October 9th. This could be the street art exhibition of the year, though I’m not feeling this new work as might as I’d expected.

Guiditta Supina

judith supine

I’m so happy to see how far along this guy has come in such a short period of time. He truly is one of the great artists of our generation and I’m so excited to see where he goes next. Just wish I still had those wheatpastes we pinned to the wall of our first art show back in 2006!

New JR and Sam3 Prints for FAME Fest

JR

JR and Sam3 have been working hard in the studio in Grottaglie! JR’s print is based on his piece “Self Portrait in a Woman’s Eye, Kenya” from the Circle Culture show back in June. Sam3’s print is called “Subconscio”. Even though these artists are stylistically very different, the introspective quality of the imagery is quite complementary; I think these prints would look nice on the wall together.

Can’t wait to see what JR does on the streets.

Bomb It screening online

Bomb It is a graffiti/street art documentary with interviews from some of the best known street artists in the world, including reclusive ones like Revs. It’s a great film, but what’s really exciting is that on September 15th it will be available for free online at Babelgum.com. There are already some interviews online with artists like Vitche and Blek le Rat, which you find on the Bomb It microsite.

Also, Babelgum are running a few contests right now relating to street art. The first contest, in conjunction with Bomb It, is the chance to go to Meeting of Styles Sao Paulo. And then there are two contests for film makers. The Metropolis Art Prize is a chance for artists to make films about their work and win $20,000. And there is a separate category for street art videos with a $5,000, so street artists are eligible for both video competitions.

kennardphillipps.com

kennardphillipps (a collaboration between Peter Kennard and Cat Picton Phillipps) has a website that launched today. kennardphillipps.com has pictures of their best work and also has prints for sale. If you’ve never seen kennardphillipps’ art before, you need to have a look. I’ve got a print by Kennard hanging in my room and it’s one of my favorite prints, but this work is just as good.

Have a look:

Escif’s Summer Walls

e01

Meant to post these when Escif sent them over yesterday but didn’t get a chance. I’ve been a fan of his work for a few years now and it’s been great to watch the evolution. I particularly like these pieces. His work at Observatori 2009 in Valencia back in June was also very good.

Our friend Sebastian at Unurth has done a nice interview with Escif; read it here.
