As Fame Festival get closer, more and more work is popping up in Grottaglie. The latest are Wordtomother‘s walls and the making of an indoor piece for the gallery exhibit, as well as some pretty intricate black and white outdoor jobs by Lucy Mclauchlan. I cannot wait to see the work created for the gallery by the artists. Less than two months away guys!

Opening today and running until August 28 is a new group show at 941Geary (White Walls, Shooting Gallery, Gallery Three) entitled from the Street Art to the Cube. There are some pieces that I am really loving for this show, especially the following pieces by Greg Gossel, Dan Witz and Best Ever.
Yet, and this is my real issue with many group shows, there is not one cohesive theme to the exhibit at all. Street art is not really a theme anymore, when there are so many facets. This particular show just jumps around so much with the works, that I do not think it works at all. Plus, within the past few months other galleries exhibited many similar pieces (or other editions) from this particular show by Miss Van, Blek la Rat and Best Ever. When you are constantly seeing the same artists name mentioned every month, the work starts to blend and is not fresh anymore. Even worse, as RJ kindly pointed out to me, that most of the artists in this show are not even street artists, not even “once upon a time.”
I guess my point is exactly that- there is not really an interesting angle that catches my interest, which is a shame because group exhibitions either showcase high profile talent really well or brings to light a batch of new artists. This show does neither.

Opening August 9 is a really cool looking exhibition at Crewest Gallery in LA strictly featuring stencil artists. Not only do I love the line-up, but for me at least, standout stencil pieces by Blek la Rat, Banksy and Nick Walker are what originally interested me in street art in the first place. The varied list of artists include Blek le Rat, Broken Crow, Chris Stain, Dave Lowell, E.L.K, Greg Boudreau, HAHA, Joe Iurato, Koleszar, Henry Quiara, Leckomio, Mefee, Nathan Phaneuf, PaperMonster, Peat Wollaeger, Scotch and Shai Dahan. This really is not a show to miss, especially since my first look at the Papermonster piece for the show seems pretty impressive.

So I know I have not been writing for a little while, but I have been terribly busy getting ready to move to England. So I apologize, but you do have Aaron and RJ to keep you company and I am pretty sure they know more than I do. Anyways, so Mr. Vandalog himself brought to my attention a gallery show happening currently entitled, “Relationships.” Taking place at Christoffer Egelund in Copenhagen, the show features an array of sculptures, mixed media, prints, and paintings by artists including Victor Castillo, Miss Van, Mike Swaney, and Tim Biskup. As a huge Miss Van fan, I am obsessed with the “S.A.L.M. 2” print. I saw pictures of the original at her show at Stolenspace in the fall, but the prints look just as amazing.

SHEONE just painted a beautiful piece in Brick Lane. One month exactly until I move to London. This also better be there. I am beginning to get worries everything I want to see in person will be vandalized or painted over before I get there!

On July 24th and 25th, the “Whitecross Street Party: The Rise of the Non-comforsits” will be in full swing in London. The whole street will turn into a creative canvas for leading street artists including Shepard Fairey, Dotmasters, Filthy Luker, Eelus, Burning Candy, and much more. Right now, everyone involved is starting to put up the public pieces, but come the weekend, the road will be turned into a giant block party. Let’s just hope these pieces get to stick around for awhile because I am really liking what I see thus far.

Furthering to girl-ify Vandalog tonight (check out this video I posted on Facebook and you will understand that previous statement), one of my favorite female street artists, Miss Van, released new prints this week. The first is entitled “Oldies II” and is a print version of a 2005 painting.
The second is a reproduction of the first painting in a new series entitled “Mascaras.” This series displays a more eloquent painting style of Miss Van’s as she pays more attention to detail of the female body in a rare full nude picture. The painting seems more alive and telling than previous works, most likely because of the more realistic aesthetic portrayed.

Since RJ is stuck in NYC now with no internet, he charged me with relaying the latest Bansky news to you all. As everyone knows, many Bansky pieces that show up on the street are chiseled out of walls and sold over the internet or through private dealings. In Detroit, one particular work is causing a whole lot of hoopla when the shady 555 Non Profit Studio and Gallery cut a Bansky out of a wall and currently has it in their possession. The company that owned the site that the piece was painted, Biosource Inc., has now sued 555 in hopes of recovering the work from their property that is believed to be valued at $100,000 and upwards. On July 27, Poster Boy will release a retrospective of his work in a published book entitled, The War of Art. Known for his advertisement mash-ups in city subways and streets, Poster Boy’s book will feature an array of his work thus far. The book is broken into three parts including his ad alterations, collaborations and odes to other street artists, and exhibition work. I am personally really excited to see the sponsored MOMA ad campaign altered pieces that caused so much controversy in NYC subways on whether it was vandalism or not. Poster Boy is still thought to be one person, but rumors circulate that it is actually a NYC collective, since his work still appeared after his arrest and sentencing.

I really do love art books, and not just because they look pretty on my shelves, but they are usually the only artist works I can actually afford to purchase.
