A Cry For Help

A Cry For Help runs from January 8 – February 5 at Thinkspace in LA. Not only does it feature a long list of great local and international artists, the show supports animal rights and protection so there will be adoptions throughout the opening weekend and the opportunity to donate food, toys and blankets to local shelters. If you love art and care about animals, this is the show for you! We also previewed it in the January issue of The Art Street Journal.

Above are pieces by Bumblebee (who also did a big install in the gallery window, plus a cool street piece nearby: see below) and Gaia, but as there is a lot of great work to be found in the show, I recommend you go check it all out for yourself here.

The Art Street Journal Issue 6 – January

The first issue of The Art Street Journal 2010 is out! Inside, amongst other things, you’ll find reviews on some of the best shows from December (like Grifters at Lazarides) and previews of some of the ones we’re most excited about in January (like A Cry For Help at Thinkspace). There are a lot of interviews in this issue, too – Martha Cooper, Mark Jenkins (who’s showing here at Carmichael Gallery with Aakash Nihalani in January) Stephan Doitschinoff and Zezao.

This month’s Unurth page is very cool (I love that this page enables us to fit so many different artists into the paper – it really is hard to include everything you want to cover in sixteen pages and Sebastian does a fantastic job of highlighting the best on the street), plus we’ve finally started the tasj bookshelf page. Each month, this page will feature a selection of the best publications out there (RJ’s The Thousands: Painting Outside, Breaking In makes it in first time, of course, as does Issue 10 of Very Nearly Almost).

As always, tasj is free and we’ll deliver it anywhere in the world. You can get it here.

Inti

We currently have a group show of all Chilean artists on the walls here at Carmichael Gallery, which was curated by Pablo Aravena. I particularly like Inti’s work (that image above is part of a big mural he painted with Cekis) so I thought I’d share some photos of past projects.

Malmo, Sweden

Almagro, Spain (collab with Lag1)

Ronneby, Sweden

I really like these unusual, ghostly characters he paints – there’s something strangely captivating about the absence of regular facial features that creates an interesting expressive quality – but I think I like his more abstract style even more. Versatility is always a good thing to see in an artist. The images below are from a show in Vina del Mar, where Inti was born.

To see more of Inti’s work, visit his flickr. (Or stop by the gallery if you’re in LA)

Ma’Claim in Berlin

The always impressive German crew Ma’Claim recently took a trip to Berlin Mitte to paint a huge wall (25 m high!) This was a particularly special occasion for the foursome (case, Akut, Tasso and Rusk) as it’s been a while since they’ve done a project this big together. Here’s the finished piece above and some progress pics that case shared with me:

Ericailcane in Brighton

As mentioned a few days ago, Ericailcane has been in Brighton working towards an exhibit (alongside Dem, Run, Cat Johnston and Andy Doig) at Prescription Art. In addition to several great installation works, there are some beautiful works on paper (the one above, Uchello 2, is my favorite) and a few limited edition prints and books available. Here’s a sample:

I highly recommend Il Numero delle Bestie and will be featuring it in next month’s bookshelf page of The Art Street Journal.

To see more of Ericailcane in Bara Volante, visit Prescription Art’s site and flickr (lots of great pics of all five artists’ work here!)

New from Labrona

Labrona

Labrona just sent me some pictures of his newest work, painted with oil stick and spray paint in the back alleys of his hometown, Montreal. I love the muted colors and the subtle expressiveness on each character’s face.

Collab with Gawd (above) and Sloe (below).

If you’re in London, you can see new work from Labrona in “Mixed Signals” at Signal Gallery, which runs through December 19th. Otherwise, check out more photos here.

Nunca : The Wynwood Walls

Nunca_DeitchProjects_Miami

There are a lot of pictures out there of Nunca’s wall for the Deitch/Goldman Wynwood Walls Project during Art Basel Miami as it looked at the opening party, but not so many people saw the finished piece. Nunca continued to work on the characters, coloring and background details right up until late Sunday night, and, as you can see from the photo above, developed his mural from something really good into something spectacular. Take a closer look below:

In case you missed what Aiko, Nina, Shepard, osgemeos, Barry McGee and Clare Rojas were working on around Nunca, check out more of my photos of The Wynwood Walls here, here and here.

SCOPE: Judith Supine and Aakash Nihalani

Some really cool installations here at SCOPE! Here are a few:

Judith Supine

Judith Supine. While the 3D effect doesn’t really carry through in this photo, this piece is really eye-catching (as all his work is) in person.

Aakash Nihalani

Aakash Nihalani. Aakash isn’t quite finished yet, so I’ll post another photo when he is. It’s so much fun to watch him work!

More Wynwood Walls Progress and a Peek at O.H.W.O.W.

As you may have noticed, Seth and I have been spending most of our free time away from SCOPE (not that we’ve had a whole lot so far – see what we (Carmichael) and the other galleries were busy with yesterday) down the street at Deitch’s Wynwood Walls, where many of our friends are hard at work on their murals for Thursday’s opening (Nina, osgemeos and Finok haven’t stopped since they arrived). Here are some pictures of what Nunca, Aiko and Clare Rojas’ walls were looking like last time we checked.

We also paid a quick visit to Al from O.H.W.O.W. the other night. This is a cool space. Here are some set up shots.

First, a peek at It Ain’t Fair, large group show. The Parla is beautiful.

And here’s where I wrote this post from, in case you were wondering. It’s super busy in here (it’s the SCOPE preview day) so I better get back to work!
