Tristan Eaton and How & Nosm in Williamsburg
Whenever I visit Williamsburg, I tend to stick to the few blocks in the vicinity of the Bedford Avenue subway station. Yesterday, we ventured further south, where we discovered not only first-rate paste-ups and graffiti — but some amazing murals, as well. My favorite is the wall shared by Tristan Eaton and How & Nosm. Here are a few images:

Lorenzo Masnah brings DISASTERS to FUSE
Disasters is the theme of a collaged mural currently underway in the hallway of the FUSE Gallery in the East Village. 26-year-old Lorenzo Masnah has been collecting, enlarging and painting over and on newspaper and magazine images of global disasters, tragedies and human rights violations for years. His politically-infused work has been published in zines and books and exhibited in a variety of gallery and alternative setting in New York City, LA and in his native Bogota, where, along with Stinkfish, he is a founding member of the APC (Animal Planet Collective). Lorenzo’s newest work will be the subject of an exhibit at FUSE Gallery next year. In the meantime, this mural is definitely worth checking out – if you’re anywhere in the vicinity of 93 2nd Avenue between 5th and 6th Streets in NYC’s East Village.
From Down Under to Long Island City: Owen Dippie and Beastman
Although I haven’t yet made it to New Zealand or Australia, they’ve come to me — thanks to 5Pointz, Long Island City’s graffiti Mecca. Last year, it introduced me to the masterful photorealistic murals created by New Zealand’s Owen Dippie and, more recently, to Australia’s Beastman’s wondrous geometric designs.
Under the Pulaski Bridge: Laguna, Cern & Cekis
I’d heard about these walls for awhile, as they’ve attracted not only local crews and writers but the likes of Os Gemeos and Laguna. But had I not decided to walk over the Pulaski Bridge connecting Greenpoint, Brooklyn to Long Island City, Queens, I may have never seen them. I will definitely be returning, but in the meantime, here are a few images:
ka and his wondrous murals
There is something magical about ka’s murals. After I spotted one in Chelsea last year, I kept on returning to it whenever I was in the neighborhood. The one he painted in the rain at last year’s Meeting of Styles at 5Pointz is now gone, but another amazing piece has taken its place. And along with his girlfriend MTK, he has NYC pretty much covered with stickers.

Herakut in Tel Aviv
Herakut’s been getting around. This past week they were among a group of a dozen artists — largely local — participating in the CASTRO Street Project at Tel Aviv’s Jaffa Port. Leora Cheshin — a Jerusalem-based photographer — shared these two photos with me:

Tats Cru with Revok on the Lower East Side
Members of the legendary Bronx-based Tats Cru have been painting legal murals on a huge wall off Avenue A and 2nd Street for the past few years. I haven’t loved all of them. The previous two were too cartoonish and gimmicky for me. But the latest one — that I passed today — is working. My favorite segments are those by How and Nosm and the tribute to Sace IRAK Irak painted by Revok who joined the Mural Kings for this wall.
New RETNA & EL MAC Mural

Mural giants RETNA and EL MAC recently teamed up for yet another epic creation, this time in Culver City. Their newest mural, titled “Of Our Youth”, can be seen on the side of Graphaids art supply store, on La Cienega between Jefferson and Washington.
The imagery and text used in this mural was inspired by their time spent at Skid Row, while painting their previous mural. The artists met a man by the name of Ralph Woodruff aka Chato and were inspired by this man’s past hardships, experiences and overall outlook on life. His ability to recognize his mistakes and atone for his sordid past was something that resonated with RETNA. The text which reads, “So today I’m trying to change a few things to rectify the situation of my past. So today I’m looking towards the future (of our youth highlighted)” is a quote taken from their conversation.
New DRAN & BRUSK Mural In London
Following their live performance at the second Lawnfest Charity event hosted by Camilla Al Fayed and sponsored by Gallery Nosco, French artists Dran and Brusk from the DMV crew left their mark in East London.
Dran and Brusk actively painted a fresh mural day and night over the week end in Great Eastern Street. The collaboration depicts a dragon monster representing a CEO (still wearing his tie on) eating an employee, while Dran’s signature children characters are happily riding and laughing on his back.
