3rdEye(Sol)ation readies for its first street art exhibit

3rdEye(Sol)ation, a spacious new gallery space at 1501 Broadway in Bushwick run by Jose Castillo, will be hosting its first street art exhibit on Friday, June 3, 7-10pm. Curated by Jason Mamarella, it features an array of artists from both coasts: Billi Kid, Peru Ana Ana Peru, ASVP, Mike Die, Jos-L, dint wooer krsna, Quel Beast, Septerhed, Choice Royce, Kosbe, QRST, Trixtr Rabbit, Bankrupt Slut, CCB, Wisher 914, ZamArt . When I stopped by earlier in the evening, Kosbe was at work on a wall which will be part of an extended open gallery. Some prints had just arrived from LA — which introduced me to the work of Septerhed.  The exhibit will open in conjunction with the Arts in Bushwick Art Walk, 6/3-6/5, noon to 7pm.

VNA 15 x Obey

This Thursday VNA will launch their latest issue featuring the likes of Shepard Fairey aka Obey. The issue also contains features on Nychos, Logan Hicks, Burning Candy Crew and Elph. ka and his wondrous murals

There is something magical about ka’s murals.  After I spotted one in Chelsea last year, I kept on returning to it whenever I was in the neighborhood.  The one he painted in the rain at last year’s Meeting of Styles at 5Pointz is now gone, but another amazing piece has taken its place.  And along with his girlfriend MTK, he has NYC pretty much covered with stickers.

From UK to HK and back again

So I’m back from Hong Kong nursing about 130 mosquito bites, but luckily a lack of sunburn – there are some upsides! In between the usual tourist based things I managed to wander the streets in and around Midlevels for an hour or two with the aim of spotting a few pieces of street art. Here are a few of the photos that interested me for one reason or another. Enjoy…

One thing I love about street art is the interaction between an artist and the environment, re-thinking spaces and re-appropriating objects, to produce art in its rawest form. In 2009 I spotted these two fire hydrants, unfortunately they had both been buffed with a new coat of paint when I re-visited them but they were my favourite pieces in Hong Kong and were too good to leave out of this post.

Steve Powers on video

Two things to note today about Steve Powers on video.

First, these guys made a video about Steve painting the 100th painting in his series of Daily Metalations, a series where Steve is trying to paint one painting a day for the entire year. The video is called DAYS and here it is:

Second, New Yorkers who are fans of Steve Powers may want to check out this film screening in Harlem on Saturday evening. Under The Influence of ESPO will include 4 films by or about Steve Powers, in including both Style Wars The Musical and A Love Letter For You, the film about/revolving around (I’m not positive since I haven’t seen this film myself yet) his project of the same name. “Free Revok” from A1one in Tehran and more

I’m a big fan of A1one’s artwork. Although I’ve seen and exhibited it on canvas, cardboard and vinyl, I’ve yet to see it up close in a public space.  ‘hoping that A1one aka Tanha can bring his talents to the U.S. at some point!  Meanwhile,  I’m enjoying the photos he shares with me from time to time.

Spencer Eldin pop-up show in LA this week

Spencer Eldin, known for being an assistant to Shepard Fairey and “The Nirvana Baby” from the cover of Nevermind, will be showing some of his artwork at a pop-up show this weekend in LA. Cash Only is only open for 5 days, and opens on Thursday night from 8-11pm. Eldin is a young artist, but he’s definitely got at least the technical side of things down already. Should be an interesting event.

In Swampy’s room

Swampy, one of the craziest writers/artists/travelers in North America as far as I can tell, has a solo show opening next month at UpperPlayground’s Fifty24SF Gallery in San Fransisco. In My Room opens June 11th, and I can’t express how excited I am about this show. That’s all for now, but hopefully I’ll have more news soon.

Berlin-based 44flavours showcases its talents

I met Julio Rölle of the Berlin-based 44flavours artist collective a number of years ago in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.  I immediately fell in love with its zine, 44flavours, for its intelligent mix of graffiti/street art culture, graphic design, interviews, prose and poetry. I later met up with Julio in Berlin and once again was intrigued by what he and his partner, Sebastian Bagge, were doing. Working these days as graphic designers, 44flavours still paints outdoors and exhibits in various venues. Opening this evening, Wednesday, May 18, 6pm at the Café Görlitzer Bahnhof,  Manteuffelstrasse 87, 10997 Berlin is a new exhibit featuring new and old work, including recent collages.
