Paul Insect – Triptease Revue at Post No Bills

The UK’s Paul Insect has a show, Triptease Revue, opening next month at Post No Bills in LA. While he might be best known in some circles for reportedly selling a boatload of art to Damien Hirst, Paul Insect has had a presence on the street on and off for years, even collaborating with Sweet Toof on a number of occasions recently. Paul Insect is one of those artists that I’m constantly going back and forth about. I’ll see one piece and love it, and then see another and thing it’s way too obvious, but at least that means he is constantly changing his style up and not getting stuck into one thing. I’m curious to see just what he’s come up with for Triptease Revue. Here are a few teaser shots:

Triptease Revue opens on November 2nd and runs through December 1st.

Weekend link-o-rama

Dimitris Taxis in Barcelona

Usually I have something to say here about my week, but it’s all kind of a blur and I’ve been struggling to find any words to describe what’s been going on or excuses for not blogging about everything interesting I’ve seen this week. So let’s skip the pointless pleasantries and here’s the stuff I missed:

  • Some thoughts from Alone One on graffiti and street art coexisting (and the inherent superiority of graffiti, according to the author). While I agree with the author that, in the case pictured, Aakash Nihilani and Posterboy did the smart and respectful thing by utilizing a piece of graffiti in their street art rather than covering it unnecessarily, the all-to-common argument that graffiti is always always always superior to street art really upsets me. Is there something beautiful/powerful about a tag that street art cannot capture? Sure. Are there street artists (and young graffiti writers) who stupidly go over important graffiti? Definitely, all the time. But warning that street artists can never go over graffiti under any circumstances is narrow-minded and naive, especially today when so much work blurs the line between street art and graffiti. It’s too bad when such a talented writer has such a narrow view of things.
  • Here’s the latest work by Dal.
  • Evol never fails to impress.
  • MOMO is part of a show on at Space 1026 in Philadelphia and made this sculpture.
  • Os Gêmeos have a show opening next week at the Museu Vale in Vila Velha, Brazil. Here’s a bit of a preview.
  • Some stunning walls were painted at Meeting of Styles London this year, particularly by Shok1.
  • S.Butterfly has a set of images from the Moniker fair. I’d like to hear in the comments what people who were there in the flesh thought, but it looks to me like a bit of brilliance (Dabs/Myla, Matt Small), a bit of goodness (Cash For Your Warhol, Aiko) and then a massive logo from D*Face and Scream Gallery’s booth which both just make me want to scream in a bad way (although I think D*Face’s piece actually looked a lot better once someone tried to mess it up and he had to change the piece to this). Update: It’s actually unclear if that simple D*face Ddog logo was intended to stay that simple or if the additions were part of the plan all along given this piece inside the fair.

Straight outta Lisbon: Bordalo II

Target has just turned me on to Bordalo II, an artist in Lisbon who is doing some of the coolest pieces I’ve seen this fall. There are a lot of people messing around with found materials and spraycans and that sort of stuff, but for some unexplainable reason Bordalo II stands out to me. Maybe it’s just that he’s not well known outside of Portugal, but he’d probably already have a nice career carved out for himself in London with this sort of work, but I’m pretty sure it’s more than that. He’s taking pretty standard “urban art” techniques and actually doing something interesting with them, as well as pushing found materials further than most. Here is some work from his recent show at Montanta’s Lisbon gallery, Turning the ordinary into original. Target has more images on his blog.

This week: Radical’s at Munch Gallery in NYC

Radical! is a young street artist based in upstate New York. This year, he’s been included in shows curated by Vandalog as well as Brooklyn Street Art as well as Living Walls Albany, but I’m pretty sure that his show opening this week at Munch Gallery is his first solo show in NYC. Upside Down Frowns will be full of entirely new work from Radical!, as well as site-specific pieces. The opening is on Friday from 7-10pm and the show runs through November 20th. Also, MaNY just uploaded a video of Radical! painting a mural a few months back.

Stormie Mills curates “For, Against, the Truth”

Three pieces by Jordan Seiler

Stormie Mills asked some of his favorite artists to paint three self-portraits from different perspectives. The result of that brief is For, Against, the Truth, a show opening this week at Linton & Kay Contemporary  Art in Perth, Australia. The show includes Vandalog regulars Remi/Rough, John Fekner and Jordan Seiler, as well as Kenton Parker, Jaybo Monk, Matt Doust, Marco ‘Pho’ Grassi, Jade Palmer, Amanda Lynn and Darren Henderson.

TrustoCorp at Opera NYC – Life Cycle

Some recent mock magazine covers from TrustoCorp

TrustoCorp‘s latest show, Life Cycle, will be opening next week at Opera Gallery‘s New York location on Spring Street. Ambitious as ever, Life Cycle will be based around 4 installations examining the stages of the life of an American, including over 50 artworks. Here’s one, called Botched Operation:

Life Cycle opens on October 21st and runs through November 11th and should be a must-see show (particularly the opening night if past TrustoCorp shows are anything to go by).
