Printing Banksy – two short films about his 2006 LA print series

Printing Banksy: Modern Multiples Creates the LA Prints is a short film/interview with Richard Duardo about the prints that he made for Banksy at Modern Multiples back in 2006 for Banksy’s Barely Legal show in LA. The interview was done soon after the prints were made, but the film was just put online last month. It’s just about the closest thing to a behind-the-scene looks as anyone has ever gotten when it comes to Banksy.

As for that whole story in the video about Richard Duardo destroying the screens and test prints and whatnot, there’s more documentation of that on another little-seen YouTube video (and you can spot Mr. Brainwash filming there too).

New Titifreak prints

For Titifreak’s upcoming show in Newcastle at One Thirty 3, he’s got two prints coming out (well, one image in two colorways). I think they look pretty great. For me, Titifreak tends to do things either very right or the work misses the mark completely. In this case, I think he’s gotten it very right once again. Each of these prints is an edition of 33 plus two APs and costs £250 each. Most of these will be released at the gallery on February 24th when the show opens, but 11 from each edition will be available for sale before then through an online lottery system. To enter, just email info@onethirty3.com.

Weekend link-o-rama

Sowat DMV and Gris

This might have been one of the least productive weeks of my life. Just one of those weeks. Here’s some of the stuff I didn’t post about while procrastinating 30 minutes of homework for 3 hours on Thursday:

ARGH LHR in London

Well I’m on my way back to Philadelphia this weekend. I can’t wait to get there and back into the swing of things. Random comment about Philly: If anyone knows of any photographers who are actively documenting street art and graffiti there, please let me know. Anyway, here’s what we missed this week:

The great GATS

I’ve been admiring the street art/graffiti that GATS has been painting in California for a while now, but somehow his work has managed to more or less escape mention on Vandalog. From stickers to roller and everything in between, GATS seems to be killing it on the street. He’s also got a cool screenprint available online for cheap. Here are some of my favorites from GATS…

Thanks to Endless Canvas for introducing me to GATS’ work.

New print from Swoon – raising money for homes in Haiti

Swoon has a new print out this week at Upperplayground to raise money for The Konbit Shelter Project, the project where Swoon and some friends are constructing homes and other buildings in Haiti. The crew was in Haiti earlier this year, and that’s where Swoon met Walki, the boy who is the subject of this print. The Walki print is an edition of 300, measures 13″ by 21″ and is available only until January 1st for $125. 100% of the proceeds from the print sales will go to The Konbit Shelter Project.

The crew will be on their way back to Haiti next week to start building single family homes and the funds raised from this print will be used to fund the costs of constructing those homes.

Walki is available on Upperplayground’s website from now until January 1st.

Here’s the interior of the community center that the crew (made up of local workers as well as Swoon and her friends who flew in to help) made over the summer:

Artist Highlight: The Phantom

Update: You can buy The Phantom’s first print is now available from Morelworks.com for $125.00

I couldn’t help but laugh when RJ emailed me about posting about street artist The Phantom. Just like him my first thought was “Isn’t this the guy that created that Rage Against the Machine cover for “The Battle of Los Angeles.”” Well, yes, it is, (and yes I know who Rage is. I may be young, but I’m not that young), but he also does some really good outdoor workswork that I haven’t seen before and was not even aware of to be honest. Concentrating on the idea of outlines, shadows and social rebellion, The Phantom’s black and white pieces have a powerful impact amongst colorful tags and blank walls.

* Vandalog was sent pictures of the artist himself, but he freaks me out beyond belief. Clowns scare the crap out of me, so face paint and an upside down cross painted on someone’s forehead would go in the category of freaking me out.*

David Choe in Japan

It’s no secret Vandalog are big fans of David Choe. I love seeing his gallery work up close and was more than excited to see his work in the Leake Street Tunnel before the Hells Half Acre Show put on by Lazarides. Never stopping for a rest, Choe has a new print out on sale through Trapeze Editions. The print is entitled Tokyo Girl and was only on sale in Japan, but now it can be ordered stateside in two sizes. The larger one (44 x 44) is an edition of five, while the smaller (17 x 17) is an edition of 76 (at a much more affordable price tag).

I also thought I would post a mini-documentary of Choe’s time in Japan at Parco Factory with James Jean at the “Secret Space.” The video was posted back in October but I haven’t seen it yet, so I thought I would share it with you guys. It’s pretty funny. I am still wondering when the larger Choe documentary will be released on DVD, if ever. Soon hopefully.
