Emerging talent in Los Angeles

This is a guest post by sebastian from unurth

The street art I most enjoy posting on unurth is by those artists that haven’t broken into the mainstream yet, so when RJ asked me to do a guest post on Vandalog, I thought I’d post about some great emerging artists from here in LA.  No Brainwash or Fairey here, but some great, fresh stuff.

Bumblebee, who is probably best known for these hives in abandoned phone boxes

Phil Lumbang, who works for Shepard Fairey’s design firm during the day, does wonderful ‘polite bears’

K74 plays with a bunch of styles, but this is one of my favourites –
‘Moses bringin’ the noise’

Zoso (aka Zoso1) usually creates wonderful characters that are not of this world

ABCNT works with the Restitution Press crew, usually pasting his signature masked man

Shark Toof is pasting bigger and bigger sharks, often on complex, textured backgrounds

These are just a selection of the current scene in LA… sorry to those artists I didn’t include! You can keep up with these artists and others on unurth.

Thanks to RJ for letting me do a guest post on the great Vandalog;  he’s going to do a guest post on unurth soon.

Invader & WK Interact @ Jonathan Levine

This is a guest post by Tanley Wong. Tanley is the Co-Founder of Arrested Motion.

Hey guys, my name is Tan and this is my first post on Vandalog. It’s an honor to be invited to back-up RJ, as we’ve long been a fan of his street art coverage “across the pond”.

On Saturday, Invader and WK Interact drew a big crowd trying to catch a glimpse of the two hard-working artists from Europe’s Street Art scene. It was a treat to see both artists create large sized works to fill the walls of Jonathan Levine’s multi-room gallery. The works from WK conveyed much raw energy and emotion as hinted in our preview. The door installations were astonishing as each one was adorned with endless details that had to be seen to be enjoyed.

Invader was equally entertaining, as his works tested your vision. Each piece required multiple looks as we deciphered the pixelated colors of each image. It was fun to see his classic “street invader” pieces remixed with the Macintosh colorways. Both artists were on hand to sign their books for their adoring fans. WK’s energy mimicked his pieces as he bounced around the gallery greeting his fans. Invader was a little more playful with his pixel shoes with rubber soles that doubled as a stamp to do a quick tag for anyone who asked nicely. He as mysterious as his reputation, but we caught a got a few shots of Invader “unmasked!” Check out the pics after the jump.

Booker/Read More Books/Reader/Boans/Oye Crushing New Orleans

For the past couple of weeks, the writer Read More Books has been absolutely crushing New Orleans. Here are a couple photos from Anthonyturducken and Skeletonkrewe who are both based down in Louisiana. Booker’s energy and pace is absolutely astounding and he consistently delivers a crisp style that is always recognizable despite his various monikers. Whichever city he visits, he always makes quite an impression. Now that it seems he’s been in one place for a while, the amount of work he’s been putting out there is just exhausting to watch.

Exquisite Attention to Detail – Specter

Specter has been recently putting up some incredible hand painted posters out on the streets of New York. His mastery of paint and courage to put such remarkably well rendered pieces on the street is overwhelming. Its been a pleasure to have him contributing to New York’s scene as of late. 3555195702_52e9cf59ef3669171902_999201b31c3519962387_69b77cb9783665383603_5cdd6d06e8

He also has some great prints that have been designed to reflect the work on the street at the Show and Tell Gallery and the Brooklynite Gallery

Props to Jake Dobkin for the photos

Willoughby Windows Preparation

Here are some photos from an amazing two days of preparation for the Willoughby Windows Project. Beautiful photos and on point documentation from the omnipresent Luna Park and Rebecca Fuller. Check out Luna’s flickr set for the in depth coverage.

Garrison at Ad Hoc writes:
Ad Hoc Art presents
“Willoughby Windows”
Friday, July 10th, 2 – 7pm
An ambitious creative venture featuring 12 storefronts on an entire block (89-106 Willoughby) of downtown Brooklyn which will highlight installations by 15+ artists. The opening will be a street party on Friday, July 10th, from 2-7pm.

Some of New York’s artistic finest will be representing to the fullest. (DO I feel a Biggie Smalls homage here?) Some of the artists included in this event will be Ad Hoc Art staff/interns, Cannonball Press, Chris Stain, Cycle, Dennis McNett, Ellis G, Gaia, Greg Lamarche, John Ahearn, Josh MacPhee, Lady Pink, Logan Hicks, Mare139, Michael De Feo, Morning Breath, and Tom Beale.

The party will be featuring entertainment by DJ $mall Change, DJ Painted, Lady Circus, and Mickey Western and food from local vendors.

Posters in the Navajo Nation

Edit: The artist is Jetsonorama.

Hey guys, Gaia here. This is my first post on Vandalog and I really must apologize for taking so long to write an entry. I found these photos of these incredible posters apparently near Tuber City, AZ in the Navajo Nation on the photostream of Yote. I was most struck by their remote location and the trust the artist had that someone would chance upon them who was attentive and appreciative. I think Yote’s documentation of these pieces affirms such determination. Unfortunately I cannot credit the artist because I have no idea who put them up, but thank you anyways.

Headed on Vacation

If you’re reading this, I’m probably not in London anymore. My friends and I are taking a trip through continental Europe, and I won’t be back until July 13th. We’ll be visiting Amderdam, Berin, Prague, Bratislava, Zagreb, Venice, Rome, Bacelona and Paris, so if you have any suggestions of things to do while we’re in those cities, feel free to let me know.

Luckily, Vandalog won’t be completely dormant while I’m on vacation. I’ve got a few amazing people lined up to do guest posts while I’m away. I won’t give away any names, but two of the guests live in LA.

Here’s new piece by The London Police in Amsterdam. I’ll definitely be on the look out for it while I’m there.

Skullphone’s gas stations

I know next to nothing about Skullphone, except he’s known for putting his logo up everywhere. Found this recent project of his yesterday though, and it looks pretty cool. Hate the recession, but you gotta love the recession inspired street art.

Skullphone has been finding abandoned/dead gas stations and putting up these posters:

More examples here and here.

On a related note, Skullphone and some other artists have a show on called “This Must Be The Place” starting June 20th in LA at the Scion Space.
