Stephanie is a recent graduate of the George Washington University where she studied journalism and communication and the Sotheby's Institute of Art in London where she earned her Master's Degree in Contemporary Arts. Hailing from the Jersey shore (unfortunately), Stephanie became introduced to street art while studying abroad in London in late 2009. Abandoning her career path in music pr and management, she began to delve into the world of urban art and began reading as many contemporary art books she could get her hands on before graduation. When she does manage to pull her nose out of art books, Stephanie likes to bike, watch old Hitchcock films, and cook a mean mushroom risotto. Some of her favorite artists include Miss Van, Keith Haring, Luke Chueh, Yoshitomo Nara and David LaChapelle.

Printing Process Workshops Presented by High Roller Society

High Roller Society will be offering free workshops over the next three weekends in monoprinting, linocutting, and screenprinting. In conjunction with their latest show “Press and Release,” these workshops will be open to the public and will teach you in depth techniques from featured artists in the exhibit. The following descriptions are taken directly from the site to explain each workshop.

Monoprint: Saturday, 10 July 3-6pm
Monoprint (or monotype) is often thought of as “the painter’s printmaking”, referring to the painterly qualities that this printing technique can achieve.  Invented by Castiglione, monotype “served to break down boundaries between painting, printmaking and drawing”. Using thick layers of water-based printing ink, Perspex sheets, and ear buds, all are invited to drop by while artists Martin Payne and Martin Lea Brown get their hands dirty.  Anyone is free to join in and experiment with this easy and versatile printing method that has captivated great masters such as Picasso, Degas and Gauguin.

Linocut: Saturday, 24 July 3-6pm
Relief printing is one of the simplest and oldest forms of printmaking, for which the linocut is attributed.  Known for revealing a more raw look, linocutting requires a range of rudimentary-looking tools, such as U-shaped and V-shaped gouges, to carve images into linoleum sheets. Join us as several artists from our current exhibition demonstrate various techniques in linoleum mark-making. THEN, try your hand at inking and printing the linoleum plates of artists such as Nylon, Cyclops, Sweet Toof and more….  This is an opportunity to get a hand-on approach to printing the works of these acclaimed artists yourself, and a chance to get a bargain in the process.

Screenprint: Saturday, 17 July, 3-6pm
Grandchild of the age-old stencil, screenprinting has been gaining both popularity and speed in the contemporary art world of today.  With visual effects aplenty, a steady arm is the main ingredient for achieving the best results.  Come test your upper body strength, and create ironical wearable graffiti paraphernalia with Miss Aida of Neon-Inc and Brag Clothing.  Printing the likes of Kid Acne, Sickboy, and the entire Burning Candy crew, Aida has quickly become a master screen-printer-to-the-stars.  Pop over to see how its done– Roll up your sleeves, learn the tricks of the trade, feed the creative revolution, and rejoin the world in DIY style.

Electric Windows Public Art Project

On Saturday July 31, Electric Windows will take place in Beacon, NY. Sponsored by Open Space Gallery and Burlock Home, 30 artists well venture to the town to participate in live painting on an abandoned factory building. This year’s event will include two other installation sites in addition to the factory.

Obey X Strange Co. Present Mr. Spray

For the first time in 11 years, Obey will release his second toy to date. In conjunction with Strange Co., Mr. Spray is a physical manifestation of a 2004 print edition of Shepard Fairey’s, which he took from an advertising design from the 1950’s. The figure comes in 4 colors (black, red, silver, and gold) and will each respectively be sold through select retailers, Strange Co,, and the Obey website. Stolenspace “Summer Group Show” Opening

Finally we have pictures from the Stolenspace “Summer Group Show” in London last Thursday.  Not only was the event jam packed, but the original works were incredible. Below are just some of the photos from the opening, but you can visit Stolenspace to see all the pieces in the exhibit. Personally, I am really loving “Taking the Mickey” print by WordtoMother, O_scar (Beauty is Only Skin Deep) by D*Face, and “Rose” by Paul Alexander Thorton. I  just wish I had the opportunity to see many of these works in person, unlike RJ, who did. Jealous.

Viva La Revolucion: A Dialogue with the Urban Landscape

I know I mentioned this show in the Invasion of San Diego post, but I figured I would go into a little more depth with it, since it is opening July 18th to the public.

The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego (MCASD) will be hosting one of the first street art museum exhibits in the middle of July.  Citing the cultural influence of art in cities, “Viva La Revolucion” brings together some of the most high profile street artists today that have made an impact on city spaces with their socio-political works.  Not only will the exhibit be one of the broadest street art museum displays ever curated, but the city of San Diego will also pay host to several public works created in currently unknown locations by some of the featured artists.  Invader’s pieces are just one of the public works, with more pieces surly to follow by the likes of Shepard Fairey, Os Gemeos, and Blu and David Ellis, and possibly Banksy.  I cannot wait to see what comes of this.

Blu “Big Bang Big Boom”

It is 2 am and just before I go to bed, I find this new time lapse video of Blu’s work in my e-mail. So of course I have to now share it, so you while I sleep in until 1 pm, all of you lovely Europeans (and Americans who are not hungover) can enjoy it in the morning. Based on Blu’s take of the evolution of life and where it is going from here, this following video rivals even that of previous work, like his incredible collaboration with Dave Ellis. Enjoy!

Invasion of San Diego

These past few weeks Invader has been quite busy plastering San Diego with his signature tile creatures. Preparing for the “Viva La Revolucion: A Dialogue with the Urban Landscape” at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego. The show, while taking place inside and on the streets of San Diego, is set to open July 17th and is sure to be one of the most talked about street art shows this summer. As one of the featured artists, Invader will not only have pieces within the museum walls and all around San Diego, but created an interactive movie map of his Invasion of San Diego. Kidrobot Customised Munny Contest

I love vinyl toys just as much as the next guy.  No, I do not care about collecting these figures, but rather, I love the detailed work that some of my favorite artists display on these mass produced creatures.  What really fascinates me is the fact that each figurine takes on a life of its own, even though they all embody the shame structure and shape.  Amazing.

This month, kidrobot, one of the leading vinyl toy manufacturers, launched a contest for people around the globe to submit their own customised  Munny.  The winner’s toy will be created and sold in stores.  The best part is that we get to view all of the entries and vote for our favorite.  Personally, I enjoy the Munny’s that still retain the original shape.  When they are altered too much, they do not not even look like the same toy.  Is that not the point in the first place?

Gallery 1988 Presents “Crazy 4 Cult: The Case of the Redundant Number”

For the fourth year in a row, Los Angeles based Gallery 1988 will host “Crazy 4 Cult,” an exhibition of 100 artists displaying their interpretations of notorious films and their characters.  A favorite show in the film capital of the world, some of the artists include Allison Sommers, Rich Pellegrino, and Glen Brogan putting their own creative aesthetic onto Hollywood movie magic.  Film art is steadily showing to be a popular asset made evident by the sale of Ron English’s Large Marilyn Red Peach at Phillips de Pury’s artful film auction, which sold for double the estimate at over $30,000.

“Crazy 4 Cult” runs from July 9-30.  The opening reception takes place July 9 from 7-10pm featuring hosts Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier, New Jersey’s own cult filmmakers who directed some of my favorite indie comedies including Clerks, Dogma, and Jay and Silent Bob.  Fun Fact: I actually live a few minutes from The Quick Stop. Shout out to Leonardo.
