Escif at POW

Escif has a solo show at Pictures on Walls coming up on April 16th. I’ve been looking forward to this for a while and as Escif has promised an installation composed of hundreds of little drawings (including the ones above and below), there will be something for everyone to take home!

Hopefully, he’ll also paint some murals during his stay in London – his outdoors pieces keep getting better, both in technique and originality.

Thanks to Escif for the images.

Aakash Nihalani: New Website and Album Design

Aakash Nihalani is always busy! He just relaunched his website (updated with images of many of his outdoor, indoor and digital projects from the past few years) and has designed an album cover for the band Das Racist. I’m not much of a fan of contemporary indie music so I don’t know what Das Racist’s songs are like, but I do appreciate good album layout when I see it. It’s also nice to know that there are bands out there who respect Aakash’s work without feeling the need to make an embarrassingly bad copycat version of it to promote one of their shitty new songs.

The London Police in Miami

When TLP hit a wall, they do it in style and as big as they possibly can. Here’s their most recent outdoor piece, painted in Miami prior to their show at The BLDG in Louisville.

Chaz and Bob also made sure to document the process through video, so check them out in action below.

New From Ethos In New York

Ethos asked me to extend the return date of his plane ticket to a week following our New York show, and I’m glad I did – here are two of the walls he finished during that time!

Vertigem: Os Gêmeos in Brasilia

I have no idea why there’s been no noise anywhere about the Brasilia installment of the Vertigem show so far – everything Gustavo and Otávio do is amazing and should be promoted as widely as possible. I’ve been eagerly awaiting pictures to post since February and by the time the show opened on March 2nd, I was busy in New York prepping for our Re-Creation II show. But enough excuses: here are some pictures now, plus two short videos of the twins working on their installation.

The show is up through May 16th if you’re passing through. Let me know if you’ve been and what your thoughts are if so – I’m sure it looks great, but I’m not getting a sense from the images I’ve seen so far of how it compares to the Rio and Sao Paulo shows.

Vitché: One of Brazil’s (And The World’s) Best

During our prep for the show the other day, I noticed Nina and Thiago (her awesome assistant) watching a video interview with their friend, Vitché (Nina’s known him for seventeen years!) Vitché’s work epitomizes what I love about graffiti and street art, Brazilian or otherwise; it blends raw power, beauty and brilliance into urban and natural environments with total ease. Without any hint of egotism, his pieces simply feel like they were meant to be there. The video below is in Portuguese, but it shows the essential things you need to know about Vitché, including many of his great murals and sculptures. His magical personality really comes across, too.

Things I Meant To Post About Yesterday…

Things have been very busy here at Carmichael Gallery lately as we prepare for our Saturday opening with Nina, so I didn’t get a chance to write about a few of the things that were on my “need to post” list yesterday. First up, Faile has released some new prints and original works on paper and they’re some of the nicest I’ve seen in a while. Faile just continue to grow on me and I love what they’re doing these days with their wood pieces. As regards the release, I just checked their site and it appears that the two originals and one of the three prints are sold out. Both my favorite original, No Escape: Return To Faile (the image above), and my favorite print, the same image but in purple hues and entitled No Escape, have gone. Here’s my second favorite, the other sold original, which has the frankly awful-sounding name of Wrong End 86 Katsina (the print version (similar but yellow as opposed to orange) is simply and much more appealingly called Wrong End Of The Rainbow), below.

Sorry for posting another item that is sold out, but it’s still worth mentioning Lazarides‘ release of JR’s Women Are Heroes book. Each of the twenty copies boasts a hand-pasted, thus unique, cover image of Self-Portrait In A Woman’s Eye (Kenya), one of my favorite of JR’s photographs.

Laz also has some cute Lucy McLauchlan Paint Pots available.

Finally, Opus just released some nice limited edition collab prints by Dan Baldwin and Hush.

Kill Pixie Solo in Brisbane

Kill Pixie/Mark Whalen is one of the most talented Australian artists connected with the street scene, so I’m always interested when he does something new. Brisbane isn’t exactly my favorite city in the world, but I wouldn’t mind making a quick trip there next week to check out Observatory at Edwina Corlette Gallery, which from the preview looks like it will be another great show from KP. It even looks better than his last two shows, and I enjoyed them. Take a look at some of my favorite pieces below (with Kill Pixie, I think the trippier and busier the work is, the better) and, if you’re in Brisbane, head over to the gallery and let me know what things are like in person. I’d like to review it in the April issue of The Art Street Journal.

Here’s a studio shot that helps give a sense of size for some of the pieces.

Busy Brazilians

Lots of amazing pieces have been hitting the streets of one of my favorite countries recently by some of my favorite artists. Check out these pics of work by Zezão (above), osgêmeos, Titi Freak and Emol.

Can’t wait to see this finished!

Loving Titi Freak’s evolving style – he’s pushing himself in a good direction.

Emol’s new work is awesome, so I’m posting two photos for him.

Thanks to Zezão, Titi, Emol and @felix001 for the images.
