Stikman seems to be out and about town here, especially in Cambridge. On the pavement, on stickers and as 3-D installations, he’s great company. Here are a few more images:

The 2012 Living Walls Conference is about to begin, and the line-up of events and murals has finally been announced. Once again, I’ll be participating at the conference. I’ll be speaking at a panel on the issue of gender, hosting an evening of short films and maybe doing a Pecha Kucha talk if I come up with something to talk about.
But of course, the highlight of Living Walls is going to be the murals. For this year’s conference, the festival organizers have decided to go with an (almost) all-women lineup of muralists including Fefe, Hyuro, Miso, Cake and Olive47, plus photographers Martha Cooper and Teen Witch.
Other speakers at the conference include Living Walls alums LNY and Gaia, as well as Ian Wilson, who recently organized the Wall\Therapy mural festival in Rochester, NY.
Living Walls will take place August 15th-19th, with special events every day. For the full lineup a comprehensive listing of events, check the Living Walls facebook event.

Gilf recently organized a legal spot for seven artists, including some of my favorites, at 229 North 10th Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Here are the finished results:

I recently came across the work of Xuan Alyfe for the first time. He seem to fit nicely somewhere between MOMO and Interesni Kazki or Os Gemeos. Alyfe’s work is the sort of thing that only seems familiar when compared to some of the great alternative street artists or great non-street artists like Miro. It’s certainly not standard for street art or graffiti, and I like the change. Alyfe’s walls don’t cry out for attention like some 3rd-tier Warhol-ripoff. They invite you in if you’re interested. Well, I’m interested. If you’re anything like me, there’s more from Alyfe to see after the jump… Continue reading “Someone new: Xuan Alyfe”

It’s a mega link-o-rama this week because I’ve been traveling from last Saturday until Thursday morning.

Philadelphia is known, perhaps too well, for character-based sticker art. Even some of this city’s best street artists, like NoseGo, have roots in characters on stickers. But Joe Boruchow is one artist who is onto something completely different. I’ve seen a few of Joe’s pieces in person and they always make me stop to have a closer look. His placement is so spot-on that the work looks legal even when it is not, although his fine-art vibe probably helps a bit too.

I made it over to Woodward Gallery last week to check out its current exhibit, Summer Selections. Described as “a selection of work by legendary and new contemporary masters,” it features some of my favorite street artists, along with such masters as Jasper Johns, Paul Gauguin and Robert Rauschenberg. And what a treat to discover an original vintage Alexander Calder lithograph with drawings by LA ll! Here are some more favorites from the exhibit that continues through this Saturday, August 4th at 133 Eldridge Street on Manhattan’s Lower East Side:
