Ron English at Elms Lesters

Went to Elms Lesters on Thursday for the opening of Ron English’s first UK solo show, and I was pretty impressed. Although I’m not as big of a Ron English fan as some people, there were definitely a few pieces that stood out for me.

And if you like that image, check out the almost life sized toy version.

More after the jump…

Mickey Mask

That Mickey Mouse piece was probably my favorite. I’d love to get that as a toy. Anybody know if one exists?

There was one piece in particular that I didn’t like though:

Last year at Cans Festival, Ron English had a guy dress up as his McSupersize character and run around. The video is kind of cool. What isn’t so cool is painting that event. IMHO, nowhere but in London (where people actually might have seen this even in person) could English sell this painting. He’s just trying to recreate what was a cool real life event on canvas, but it doesn’t carry over at all.

Oh well, it’s still a nice show overall.
