Weekend link-o-rama

Well, it’s a slow week, but not completely silent. Here’s a bit of what we missed:

Biserama is new to me, but definitely interesting.
I don’t usually enjoy light installations (usually they’re just so corny, like thankfully temporary plop art), but these are an exception.

Kickstarters from Swoon and Nosego

Both Swoon and Nosego are involved in active Kickstarter projects that are fundraising right now.

Swoon is headed back to Haiti for the latest iteration of the Konbit Shelter Project. That Kickstarter is looking to raise $30,000 to build their third building in a small town in Haiti. The money will primarily go to purchasing building materials and paying community members to help the Konbit Shelter team with construction. This time around, the hope is that the team will be able to use building techniques that are more affordable and sustainable than ever before. After the third building is finished, a book will be published explaining the techniques that Konbit Shelter has been honing for the past three years so that they can be used by others. You can contribute to that project here. Rewards include lots of beautiful artwork. And here’s a video about the project:

Nosego’s project is a sort of followup to the highly addictive iPhone game Catball Eats It All, a game which extensively features artwork by Nosego. The new game being developed is Rusty the Rainbow Whale. Again, all the graphics will be based on paintings by Nosego, and the plot of the game sounds a lot like him too: Rusty the Rainbow Whale can make a giant rainbow by eating tasty hamburgers, and he waits to make a rainbow so large that it makes everyone in the world smile simultaneously, so he has to eat a lot of hamburgers. The project needs $5,000 to help fund the game’s development. You can help fund the game and learn more by going here. Rewards include lots of Rusty-related products and artwork, or even your very own Nosego mural.

Mass Appeal speaks with NoseGo

Mass Appeal recently made this video interview with Philadelphia’s Yis Goodwin, aka NoseGo. It’s a great little introduction to a talented artist Philadelphians know very well, but who is only just starting to get major national and international recognition.

NoseGo from coast to coast

Yis Goodwin aka NoseGo recently put up some work in New York City, Philadelphia San Fransisco. Last week, he installed a piece, Daily Spontaneous Excursions, at Woodward Gallery‘s outdoor installation space. This week he painted the above mural in San Fransisco thanks to Rogue Projects. Also this week, he painted a spot in Philadelphia as part of Street Dept.’s Furnessadelphia show, which opens today.

NoseGo makes giclée prints that aren’t terrible

Longtime readers of Vandalog may know that I have a pretty strong dislike of giclée prints. Typically, they are not all that well printed, and they are extremely overpriced. I don’t know anything as high-margin for artists as a giclée print. But NoseGo recently came out with three giclées that prove my point about pricing and buck the trend. These three 8.5″ x 11″ prints, editions of 50 each, are on sale on NoseGo’s website for just $10 each. Not a bad deal, and NoseGo still shouldn’t have much trouble making a buck or two for himself off of these. I can’t speak to the quality of the printing, but the images certainly are cute and I don’t know NoseGo as the type of artist to put out sub-par work just to make a buck off his fans. NoseGo painting live this Friday

NoseGo, one of Philadelphia’s best-loved and most-talented muralists, will be doing some live painting in Philadelphia this ~~Thursday~~ FRIDAY on at The Shaft, an open air gallery space on Broad Street.

The exhibit is part of a curatorial practice program being taught to UArts MFA students by Maiza Hixson and Lauren Ruth.

If you search around the internet, you may notice that Artists 4 Israel (a controversial organization) had been advertising this exhibit and saying that they are involved in it. This is no longer the case. Based on the group’s Facebook page, it appears that they are interpreting this situation as being “banned in Philly” and “censorship,” but I’m pretty sure that a gallery/curators deciding to part ways with an organization is not the same as censorship of that organization (although, ironically, I did have to Photoshop the Artists 4 Israel logo out of the above flyer). Personally, I would not work with a Tea Party-affiliated organization on an exhibit, but I’m not trying to censor tea partiers. Anyway…

Let’s all have a good time seeing NoseGo paint some cool stuff on ~~Thursday~~ FRIDAY!

Preview: Paint It Now at Space 1026

OverKill Studio’s Paint It Now has finally come to Philadelphia. The traveling series of Paint It Now exhibitions have been in Boston and Brooklyn, and the latest iteration of Paint It Now is due to open this Friday at Space 1026. The idea behind this series of exhibitions is that a group of artists have to work somewhat together as they all paint a series of white walls with only black paint. This time around, some of the artists include Gaia, el Celso, Stickman, Nose Go, Harlequinade and Buildmore.

Paint It Now opens on Friday the 4th from 7-10pm and runs through May 25th.

I stopped by yesterday to see how the show was coming together. From what I saw, the show is going to be close to that perfect mix of familiar faces and fresh talent that so many group shows strive for but few achieve. Royce Bannon Curates RATHER UNIQUE for Woodward Gallery

Not only is Royce Bannon one of New York City’s most passionate street artists, but he is also a first-rate curator. His current venture, Rather Unique, is a testament to both his curatorial skills and to the diverse range of artwork crafted by artists whose primary canvas is the streets. And the Lower East Side’s Woodward Gallery, located at 133 Eldridge Street, is the perfect venue for the exhibit. Here are a few images:
