Weekend link-o-rama

Well it was the first week of midterms for me, so lots of time was spent locking myself in my room, turning off the wifi and just studying. On the plus side, had a great meeting today trying to get some grant money from my college to bring street artists to campus and I took a nap on what might just be the world’s comfiest couch. So here’s what I haven’t had the chance to blog with all that school stuff going on:

  • I’ll be running a modified version of my street art tours next Friday at the Moniker Art Fair. The tour will be free and we’ll being checking out the fair as well as some of the street art in Shoreditch nearby. That will be from 1-2:30 11:30-1pm and 1:30-3:00pm next Friday afternoon at Moniker.
  • Unurth has photos of Escif’s latest murals.
  • Kaws blogged some teaser shots of his upcoming book.
  • Feral has been posting a lot of photos on his flickr over the past month of the interesting work he’s been making.
  • Mike put together a nice overview of FAME Festival for Arrested Motion
  • The latest in the line of shows Yosi Sergant (previously involved with Manifest Hope and Manifest Equality) has worked on, Re:Form School looks to be another massive group show advocating a good cause. It is open in New York this weekend only.
  • Kofie has a solo show opening this weekend at White Walls in San Fransisco. The opening reception is on Saturday evening. Check out The Citrus Report for more info.
  • LAB (Little Art Book) has a pop-up shop in London starting today through October 23rd. There will be prints for sale priced as low as £30. Their blog has more info.

Escif’s next solo show: Against The Wall

This Friday, Barcelona’s Montana Gallery will be opening Escif‘s second solo show. In April, Escif was at Pictures on Walls for Around The Wall. Continuing on that theme, this new show is titled Against The Wall. His show at POW was a big hit, and I think we can expect more awesomeness from Escif this week in Barcelona.

Here’s a teaser of some of the work at Against The Wall:

One thing that surprised me at Around The Wall was Escif’s conceptual video art. Looks like there will be more of those videos in Barcelona, as he’s posted this video on YouTube as a teaser for Against The Wall:

Escif, from paper to walls

This wall by Escif was just painted for San’s Insitu Festival. What I find really cool about it is that I’d seen this design from Escif before. At his recent show at Pictures On Walls. This wall is based on the largest work on paper from that show. You can see it in the video I made there. Most street artists would paint something on a wall, wait for it to be popular and then reproduce it as a screenprint or painting inside. Escif has said before that his indoor work is really just preparation for walls he wants to paint outside. I guess he’s just provided some evidence to support that claim.

San’s Insitu Festival

San, one of the many talented artists that I don’t write enough about, has put together quite a festival in Miajadas, Spain with Insitu. Herbert Baglione (though not my personal favorite, I can see why people love him), Escif, Sam3 and of course San himself will all be involved. I’ll be keeping an eye on the festival’s blog to see what everybody paints.

Speaking of Escif, Unurth has photos of the pieces he recently painted in Poland.

Booked – Group Exhibition and Book Day at Carmichael Gallery

It’s been a long time since Seth and I have had a group show this big at Carmichael Gallery – there will be over 35 artists represented on the walls when we open “Booked” on Saturday, June 5th! Some of the artists we’ve worked with for several years and others we’ll be showing for the first time. We’re also going to have lots of great art books and magazines from publishers like Drago, Gingko, Studiocromie (I really enjoyed opening up the box of Blu and Sam3 books!) and VNA. Books and art are two of the best things in the world, in my opinion, so it should be a fun event! We will be open from 12-8pm on Saturday for Culver City Art Walk (make sure to visit all the other galleries on the block if you come by; there will be lots of cool things to see) and the reception itself is from 6-8pm.

Here are some of the pieces in the show.

Video: Escif’s Around The Wall show at POW

Escif’s solo show Around The Wall opened at Pictures on Walls in London a few weeks ago. I haven’t really mentioned it since the opening because I’ve been waiting until I could post this video. I guess the video pretty much sums up my thoughts on the show, so I won’t write too much, but I really enjoyed it and if you’re in London, it’s definitely worth checking out.

So here’s my video walk-through of the show (some people reading this post through RSS readers may have to go to vandalog.com to view this video):

Around The Wall runs until May 30th.

One more Escif teaser

I know I’ve been posting a lot about Escif this week, but I could not be more curious about his solo show at Pictures on Walls. It opens tonight, so expect pictures posted over the weekend. This a wall that Escif painted on Fashion Street in London, a nice spot that I think has been massively neglected for a while.

Another teaser from Escif

As mentioned the other day(s), Escif‘s solo show (now called Around The Wall) at Pictures on Walls opens on Friday. POW have uploaded a second teaser video for the show, and it looks like Vandalog was correct in reporting that this show is going to get very conceptual (but for fans of Escif’s drawings, don’t worry. Those seem to be included too). Also, Arrested Motion has a picture of some more outdoor pieces from Escif. These ones are on the outside of Pictures on Walls and they look very fun.

Here’s the new teaser video:

More about Escif

Forgot to post this video in yesterday’s post about Escif and his upcoming solo show at Pictures on Walls. You may recognize it for its inclusion in Exit Through The Gift Shop. As I understand it, he set up the video camera and painted in that particular spot in an effort to get arrested on tape. And he succeeded (if you can call getting arrested success).
