Weekend link-o-rama

Sticker by Hieronymus

Wow. It’s actually Friday night already? This week went by really fast. I think I’ve been sleeping too much. Well, while I was sleeping, these things nearly slipped me by:

The week’s not up yet though, and I’ve committed to doing at least one useful thing before it is: Tomorrow I’m going to try using my kitchen for the first time since going to university. Wish me luck…

Primary Flight is gonna be massive in 2010

This year’s edition of Primary Flight, Miami’s original annual mural festival, is shaping up to be pretty mad. Primary Flight, now in its 4th year, is an annual mural festival that takes every year in Miami during Basel Miami. Past highlights include murals from Depoe, El Mac and Retna, Pose, Shepard Fairey, Typoe, Boxi and Ron English. Like last year, most of the painting will be going on at the RC Cola Plant in Wynwood, with other artists painting between 20th and 36th Streets, from NE Second to Biscayne Boulevard (Wynwood and the Design District I believe).

Primary Flight has put together an impressive group of artists. Here are just a few from their massive list that I’m most excited about: Anthony Lister, Augor, Burning Candy, Haze, Nunca, Remed, Retna, Saelee Oh, Skewville and Stormie Mills. Everyone will be painting from November 29th through December 5th.

Primary Flight 2010 will also mark the start of the Wynwood Mural Museum, which is something that Primary Flight, the Wynwood Arts District Association, and the City of Miami have put together. The museum is a listing of over 30 murals that have gone up since the start of Primary Flight. As I understand it, the government of Miami weren’t originally fans of the festival, so it’s pretty cool to see them change their minds and get behind it.

Keep an eye on Vandalog, as I’m sure we’ll be posting some photos from Primary Flight, and if you’re in Miami this December, this is definitely something to check out. It’s probably where I’ll be spending most of my time while I’m in town.

To get a sense of these correlations between sometimes seemingly disparate conceptual, graffiti and activist works, download this informative essay by Alan Moore with Jim Cornwell Local History: The Art of Battle for Bohemia in New York.
In an effort to explore street art in a frame of relational aesthetics, let’s start with these connections, exhibitions and artists

Waverly Development Legacy Project

The third installment of the Legacy project, James Rouse is imposed with his own words back onto one of his first development projects in Waverly, Baltimore. Built in 1957, the Waverly development was one of the very first Urban Renewal sites in the United States. Housing stock designated as slum land was cleared for around 300 units and a small shopping center and was originally reserved for white families only.

Parallels: Alfredo Jaar Part 2

In light of the recent bill board takeover projects curated and organized by Jordan Seiler that we have covered in the past, I would like to a couple different billboard projects by Alfredo Jaar. With Why (2008) Jaar was granted access to various billboards run by clear channel, and rather than provide an alternative to the sale of products, he asks the simply question, “why?” By questioning this format of communication but providing no context or trail to follow, the authorship of the unique artist is nullified. Secondly we have the Rwanda, Rwanda (1994) project which is a series of pieces on street level ads bringing awareness to this war torn country. A simple reminder amongst all the contending issues that suffuse the urban environment.

iPhone/iPad/laptop cases from José Parlá

The awesome José Parlá has just made a series of cases with Incase through their Curated by Arkitip program. They look pretty good, but I’m curious to see how well-printed they are in person. With Parlá, I’ve always felt that the work needs to be seen in person to have the proper impact (and I know this is anti-art-blogs, but check this article for more on the topic of seeing things IRL). Still, the iPhone case is now on my Christmas list.

Admittedly, the pricing for the laptop and iPad products is pretty damn high, but I think that’s because they’re leather.

And for Parlá fans on a budget, there’s always the free iPad, laptop and iPhone desktop backgrounds from his artwork. Those are at the bottom of this page.

Faile prints and more on sale today

At noon Eastern time today, Faile will be releasing some new prints in their online shop. No images yet, but I’ll update the post later. The three prints are all 18-colors and will be available for $800. Okay. So Faile are releasing another print. What I think is really awesome is the other item going on sale today: Faile Bedtime Stories Blocks. Basically, those are a box of 8 random space wooden blocks from their current solo show. You might say that Faile are just slapping together some random stuff from their studio and selling it, and maybe they are, but it reminds me of the décollage style that Faile try to emulate in their art. In short, I think the blocks are awesome. Those are an edition of 150 and will be available for $150.

Keep an eye on Faile’s online store for these items to go live any minute.

UPDATE: Here are images of the prints and blocks…
