Nuart 2011

David Choe and DVS-1

This year, Vandalog hasn’t been covering the Nuart festival in Norway nearly as closely as we should. Some great work has gone up by a bunch of artists over the last few weeks. Between Nuart’s flickr page and the coverage at Arrested Motion though, the festival has been covered extensively elsewhere. Check out Arrested Motion for Nuart contributions by Lucy McLauchlan, Dan Witz, Phlegm, Herakut, Vhils (including what may be my new favorite piece by him), Escif, David Choe and DVS-1 and Nuart’s flickr set for even more images.

TrustoCorp at Opera NYC – Life Cycle

Some recent mock magazine covers from TrustoCorp

TrustoCorp‘s latest show, Life Cycle, will be opening next week at Opera Gallery‘s New York location on Spring Street. Ambitious as ever, Life Cycle will be based around 4 installations examining the stages of the life of an American, including over 50 artworks. Here’s one, called Botched Operation:

Life Cycle opens on October 21st and runs through November 11th and should be a must-see show (particularly the opening night if past TrustoCorp shows are anything to go by).

Kid Acne Heads to the posh side of London

On November 7, Kid Acne‘s latest show opens at JAGGEDART in Marylbone. This particular show is a bit of a departure for the artist as he collaborates with photographer Patrick Guedj of Kenzo Parfums. I surprisingly like the work, mainly because it feels like a peep into Kid Acne’s sketchbook, or what he would do if he was given a set of photographic stills and create doodles. All the same, I really enjoy seeing any artist stepping out of the box and taking a risk with their work in a different medium and capacity.

Weekend link-o-rama

Had about 4 days away from a computer and it’s taken me nearly as long to catch up on emails. This post should help to finish that task. Here’s what I missed while I was away:

Quel Beast x Reka x Skullphone (kinda) x Infinity x Royce Bannon x El Celso

Keith Schweitzer and Joyce Manalo organized getting these shipping containers painted for MaNY and Fourth Arts Block. Forth Arts Block got permission for the site, the like-up was solidified over a weekend and painting began almost immediately. It’s amazing how easily things come together sometimes. They brought in Infinity, Royce Bannon, El Celso and Quel Beast from New York, plus Reka from Australia while he was in New York for a bit. Since Skullphone already had a poster on the container, Infinity kept it and blended it into his own piece a bit (with Skullphone’s okay). Here’s a video of the process (Quel Beast’s piece was later changed after this video was filmed):

Moniker Art Fair opens today

Back again this year at Village Underground in London, the Moniker Art Fair is opening today and will be open through Sunday. In contrast to the Frieze art fair (also on this weekend in London), Moniker is free and focuses on work by street artists and low-brow artists. This year, galleries exhibiting at Moniker include Stolenspace, Scream, LeBasse Projects, Shea & Ziegler (Frankie Shea of Moniker/CampBarbossa teaming up with Tina Ziegler) and Andenken Gallery.

The program at this year’s fair is packed, so make sure to check it out before heading over, as there are a number of special events like print releases and artist talks going on. Hooked Blog is running tours of the fair and the surrounding street art on the weekend, something I had a lot of fun doing on a more informal basis last year.

In addition to gallery booths, the fair includes project spaces for individual artists. This year, Matt Small, Beejoir, Best Ever, Peeta, Dabs and Myla will be showing work in the project spaces.

Nele Azevedo at Rivera Gallery

Rivera Gallery in Los Angeles is having a group show this Saturday, October 15. I stopped by the gallery earlier today and it’s already looking good – lots of interesting installations and pieces with an environmental theme. The artist who interests me the most is probably Brazilian artist Nele Azevedo (pictured above), who is best-known for her site-specific series of ice-based urban interventions known as Melting Men, which form part of her Minimum Monument series, a project she has continued to develop and evolve since 2001. A critical exploration and subversion of the concept of public city monuments and their role in shaping modern man’s disconnected attitude with the natural world, the project has also been embraced as a powerful proclamation on climate change.

Nele is featured in Marc and Sara Schiller’s TRESPASS book and has made it on Unurth in the past – so I recommend googling her name if you’re interested in seeing more. It’s a cool, unusual form of street art. That particular sculpture in the photo above was made in Sao Paulo in 2002.

Vaughn Bell, Robert Cannon, Aharon Gluska, Claire Morgan, Robert Standish, Jason deCaires Taylor, Levi van Veluw and Yuriko Yamaguchi are the other artists in the show, which was curated by gallery director, Maryam Parsi.

I’ll be at the opening on Saturday, so if you’re in the neighborhood, maybe I’ll see you there.
