Here are new beautiful new walls by Jorge Rodríguez-Gerada.

The wall shown above, “Yousif Manama Bahrain,” was made in Bahrain as part of Al Riwaq Art Space’s Alwan 338 festival. The portrait of one of Bahrain’s traditional fishermen is part of Rodríguez-Gerada’s Identity series. What I did not realize until now about the murals in that series is that they are temporary pieces, washing away in the rain. Here’s a timelapse of the piece being drawn and then fading away:

Marcos Zotes appropriates, subverts and activates

Marcos Zotes gained a lot of attention last fall for this projection in Brooklyn. Recently, he did two projections at Columbia University, where he is a research fellow. The first was with permission and displayed messages submitted to yourtexthere.org. I haven’t seen any documentation of how that projection turned out. The second, Appropriate, Subvert, Activate!, was done without a green-light university. For Appropriate, Subvert, Activate!, Zotes projected a series of phrases about the the use of supposedly-public space onto Columbia University’s Low Library. Great use of an otherwise blank space that looks like it was perfectly designed to display text.

Filthy Luker’s giant Space Invaders game

Filthy Luker‘s latest street intervention was up last month in Manchester: A building-sized and playable game of Space Invaders using construction materials and lights. Similar projects have certainly been done elsewhere, but using the construction materials makes this one distinctly a Filthy Luker project (and easily moveable to new locations). Here’s a video of the piece coming together and in action:

Jeff Soto for Chevy

Jeff Soto recently worked with Chevy on an ad for the Chevy Sonic. I’ve got some problems with advertising, advertisers working with artists and advertising that co-opts street art and graffiti to sell dumb crap. But I’m pleasantly surprised that this advertisement actually kind of works. At the end of the day, the world is left with a new mural by Jeff Soto, and that mural doesn’t have a massive Chevy logo on it, just an engine block. Is the concept a bit cheesy? Perhaps. Is calling the piece “street art” irritating? Sure, but expected. Even I oversimplify at times by calling murals (or in this case, pseudo-murals) street art. And the ad still way better than 90% of the street-art-related advertisements out there. So, an awkward kudos to Chevy for not screwing this up, I guess…

Retna – Time Traveler trailer

Retna‘s latest solo show opens on April 24th at Art Careyes Gallery at the Costa Careyes resort in Careyes, Mexico. And yes, I just repeated “Careyes” 3 times, but it’s not my fault that everything relating to this show seems to have that in the name. Anyway, the show is called Time Traveler. Here’s a beautiful video trailer for the show:

Kickstart the Shepard Fairey biopic – OBEY THE GIANT

Remember that film about Shepard Fairey that was on Kickstarter last year for about a day before the project disappeared? It didn’t actually disappear. Actually, a crew went and filmed the damn thing. Now they are back on Kickstarter looking for some funding to finish post-production. The film, OBEY THE GIANT, is directed by Julian Marshall, a 21-year old student at Shepard’s alma mater RISD. OBEY THE GIANT tells the true story of Shepard’s first major billboard takeover. It was an assignment for a class at RISD where he had to illustrate the words from a fortune cookie. His fortune read “TO AFFECT THE QUALITY OF THE DAY IS NO SMALL ACHIEVEMENT.” So he took that and ran with it. I could say more, but the trailer is one of the best things I’ve seen all year and so I don’t want to spoil it anything.

Julian is looking for another $30,000 to finish OBEY THE GIANT. The entire thing has already been shot. It would be a shame if the project never left the editing room. Can you help? “Is This Illegal?” ad takeovers

Desire Obtain Cherish recently started a new campaign of anti-billboard pieces using the slogan “Is This Illegal?” which points out that LA is overrun with unlicensed advertising and that street artists who go over billboards can face felony charges even though the billboards themselves are often illegal to begin with. So far, the group has hit up at least one full-sized billboard and some street-level advertising.

When watching this video of their billboard takeover, please ignore the general cheesiness of the video, as the text at the end is actually quite informative:

Once the issue of the mural moratorium in LA is more or less fixed (should be soon), maybe “Is This Illegal?” will become the new slogan of LA’s outdoor art community and the disruption of illegal advertising will become their new political cause. One can dream…
