Herakut at Newcastle’s One Thirty 3

Herakut in LA

Herakut are the next artists to take over One Thirty 3, a project space in Newcastle. As usual with shows at One Thirty 3, the focus will be an installation throughout the gallery and the show will only be open for one night. Additionally, there will be one painting for sale and a print with an edition size of 33. This show will only be open from 6:30-9:30pm on July 14th, but the prints will be available online on the 15th.

Weekend link-o-rama

Beau Stanton and Darkclouds at Welling Court

So I got the latest issue of Juxtapoz in my inbox today (I have a digital subscription), and realized that I still haven’t read the last issue yet. D’oh. So while I get on that, here are a few links to keep you busy.

  • Contra Projects showed at Scope in Basel, Switzerland. They had work from TrustoCorp, How&Nosm and Tristan Eaton.
  • This is perhaps a controversial statement, but Faile’s print show in LA looks great. I barely mentioned the show here before it opened because I didn’t have high expectations and the print release seemed silly, but damn was I wrong (about the show, still big on the print release). Faile get a lot of crap for their prints, but when they are on, they are really really on.
  • This is a few weeks out still, but Subliminal Projects has a group show of female artists including Swoon.
  • Lois has been posting on Vandalog about Ad Hoc Art’s Welling Court mural project, and the photo at the top of this post is from that project as well. Obviously I’m a fan. So here’s even a bit more from Welling Court, over at Brooklyn Street Art.
  • This show over in Milan with Futura, Os Gêmeos, Delta and more looks great. Especially the Futura pieces.
  • If you haven’t in a while, go check out Xylo’s website. Lots of good stuff on there. Especially his supermarket pieces.
  • Someone, possibly associated with Banksy and possibly not, tagged this Banksy piece at MOCA. There has been work put up inside MOCA by uninvited artists, both in the bathrooms and throughout the McGee/James/Powers Street installation, but Banksy has also been changing up his section, so either option is definitely possible.

Next week: Stolenspace’s summer group show

Stolenspace Gallery‘s summer group show opens next week, on July 7th. All the work in this show, prints and originals, will be new. The artist lineup includes D*face, Dan Witz, Eine, Miss Van, Ripo, San, Shepard Fairey, Word To Mother and a number of others. Check out the full artist list on Stolenspace’s website. Here’s a great little piece from Dan Witz that will be there:

New Paintings from Old School Legend Fab 5 Freddy @ Gallery 151 on the Bowery

One of NYC’s most active train bombers in the late 70’s and early 80’s, Fred Brathwaite aka Fab 5 Freddy is probably best-known for his work as a film producer, director and co-host of Yo MTV Raps.  He was also, as Jeffrey Deitch reminds us, one of the leading forces behind the movement that brought graffiti into galleries and helped link the distinct uptown and downtown cultures. With a painting on exhibit at MoCA’s Art in the Streets and a solo exhibit of recent work at Gallery 151 at 350 Bowery, this hip-hop pioneer is once again gaining recognition for his visual art. Last night I stopped by the gallery to check out “New York: New Work” that opened earlier in the month (and closes this Friday). There’s a range of mixed-media paintings on exhibit including images of boxers and exotic dancers. My favorite pieces, though, are those that celebrate the bold flavor and brash spirit of old school graffiti. Here are a few:

Barry McGee solo show opens tomorrow in London

From Barry McGee's show at Modern Art in 2005

Barry McGee’s first exhibition in London in 6 years opens this Thursday evening at Stuart Shave/Modern Art. Do. Not. Miss. This. Show. The private view is Thursday from 6-8pm, and the show will be open through August 13th. We’ve got no idea what to expect, but it’s McGee, so it’s fair to expect something pretty damn interesting. His Street installation with Steve Powers and Todd James is a definite highlight of Art in the Streets right now at MOCA in LA. See you there. And if you’re not in London, I plan to take plenty of photos so check back later this week for those.

Roa’s first Berlin solo show + some walls

Roa in Berlin. Photo by URBAN ARTefakte

Roa‘s work has made it to the walls around Berlin before, but next month at Skalitzers Contemporary Art he will have his first solo show in the city. Titled Transit, the show will double as the launch of a new book that Roa has made called ROA: An Introduction To Animal Representation, published by Mammal Press. Transit opens on July 9th and runs through August 6th.

While the above piece in Berlin was painted about two years ago, here are some more recent walls from him…

Town & Country group show in NYC

Leon Reid IV public art proposal

Town & Country is a group show opening next week at 320 Studios in NYC. It’s curated by my friend Keith Schweitzer at M.A.N.Y, Samson Contompasis from The Marketplace Gallery and others. Almost 2 dozen artists are in this show, including Leon Reid IV, Veng, White Cocoa, Olek and Chris Stain. Town & Country will only be open for 3 days (June 28th-30th), but it should be a pretty great three days. The opening is on the 28th from 6pm-midnight.

Weekend link-o-rama

Peter Fuss

This week the link-o-rama is coming from Steph’s room, where I’ve been staying. After all, got that beautiful baby boy to take care of… Here’s what’s been going on elsewhere in street art this week:

Coming next month: Kid Acne’s 1st museum show

Kid Acne at Stolenspace Gallery. Photo by Unusualimage

Kid Acne will be getting some major recognition from his hometown of Sheffield in July: He has a solo show at Museums Sheffield‘s Millennium Gallery. The show, Kill Your Darlings, will be opening on July 21st. Okay, this isn’t Banksy versus The Bristol Museum, but it should still be pretty cool. Kill Your Darlings will have pieces from all stages of Kid Acne’s career, as well as some new artwork. I came across an album cover he did a while back which I almost bought just for the artwork, so I’m looking forward to seeing more of his kooky graphic design work as well as whatever new things he’s got planned (hopefully a nice sculpture like in the photo above).

Kill Your Darlings runs through October 23rd.
