Olive47 at Breeze Block Gallery next month

-3

Olive47, a longtime friend who also happens to paint some of my favorite cute characters, has a show next month at Breeze Block Gallery in Portland, Oregon. bonita bonita has been curated by Sven Davis, another friend from the UK and the UK editor over at Arrested Motion. If you want to go to a gallery and know that you’ll leave happier than when you came in, this show could be for you.

bonita bonita opens May 2nd from 6-10pm and runs through June 1st.

Graffiti and fine art meld in Saber’s new work at Opera Gallery

saber-Fragments

I checked out Saber’s show at Opera last Friday — the day after it opened — and it’s been on my mind since. There is a vigorous beauty here that reflects the artist’s talents, techniques and distinct sensibility. It also represents the fusion of graffiti — or calligraffiti — and fine art as its best. I love what has become his signature take on the American flag.

The exhibit continues until May 11 at 115 Spring Street in SoHo.

Skewville’s “Amusement” at White Walls

IMG_3056_Skewville_White_Walls_JR

Amusement, a show from twin street artists Skewville, is on now through May 4th at White Walls in San Fransisco. How I wish I could experience this show in person (and when it comes to Skewville, even non-interactive pieces seem more like something to experience than to “see”). Amusement has paintings, sculpture, and even a ride. Skewville are, in my opinion, two of the most underrated street artists around, and this show only provides further evidence of that.

Bom.K solo show in Paris this week

Work in progress

Galerie Itinerrance in Paris has a solo show of Bom.K‘s work opening tonight. Sorry for the short notice. Bom.K is one of my favorite painters of twisted imagery, and you can’t deny his skill with a spraycan. Of course, he is also a founder of the all-around impressive DMV crew. Vertiges & Somnolence opens tonight (Wednesday) at 6pm and runs through June 1st. It looks like Bom.K has been painting some huge canvases for this show. It should definitely be worth checking out. Here’s a little preview:

The London Police showing soon at StolenSpace

-2

The London Police are due to show in, well, London next month at StolenSpace Gallery. It’s All Fun & Games Until Someone Gets Hurt centers on theme of sport. As the press release notes, “they have totally mistimed their sterling effort of jumping on the Olympic bandwagon,” but hey, those works are complex things and a show around sport is better late than never.

It’s All Fun & Games Until Someone Gets Hurt opens on May 9th (6-9pm) and runs through May 26th. I’m headed to London in late May, so while I’ll miss the opening myself, I’m looking forward to seeing the show in person.

I can never get enough of RAE‘s zany characters that surface regularly on a range of public surfaces in Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn. TriBeCa gallery Masters & Pelavin is hosting two wondrously fashioned ones in the group exhibit, Legend Tripping, opening this evening from 6-8pm at 13 Jay Street.

Goya 907: Dispatches From the Crud-Cake

TONY003

A perfect combination of endearing and grimy, Goya 907’s characters have long been one of my favorite pieces to spot. An active former New Yorker, his pieces will surprise you in places ranging from abandoned buildings to a sticker on a street corner that you must have walked by a thousand times, only to notice it now. Even though he may no longer reside here, Goya’s graffiti is still an integral part of New York’s landscape. Particularly of note in the artist’s studio pieces is his customization of his iconic image. Using the basic structure of claw hands and little stick legs, this skeleton becomes customized with traces of people Goya encounters in his daily life. Whether it’s his friend’s favorite boots or an arm tattoo, these pieces change his cartoon from a representation of self to an endearing representation of others.

Goya aka Tony Bones has a show tonight at Tender Trap in Brooklyn.

TONY004

For a short biography of the artist (one as comedic as his work) and details of the opening, curator Andrew H. Shirley sent this press release:

The fantastic Dennis McNett has a solo show opening on Friday at MOHS exhibit in Copenhagen, Denmark, so Henrik Haven went over to get some photos as McNett set up and worked on an installation. The show runs April 19th through May 18th, and is pretty much guaranteed to be killer if you have any interest in linoblock or woodblock prints. McNett is an absolute master. Check out more of Haven’s extensive preview photos after the jump… Continue reading “Preview: Dennis McNett show show in Copenhagen”
