PosterBoy Show Next Month in NYC

Some pretty exciting news from New York. One of New York’s newest art galleries, Eastern District, is having a show with PosterBoy opening April 3rd. Information is limited at this point, with just a few lines on Eastern Districts website. The show is presented by Public Ad Campaign, a really cool blog. This show is going to be one of my first stops when I visit New York next month. I bet it is going to be amazing. Other than the piece photographed below, these should be PosterBoy’s first works in a gallery.

Anthony Lister Solo Opens in Italy

Anthony Lister Wall

Nine times out of ten, Anthony Listers’ work leaves me absolutely blown away. That’s why I was so pleased to hear that he has a solo show called “The Pain of Feeling” opening tomorrow at KGallery in Italy. The above photo is from a wall that he’s painted at KGallery.

KGALLERY
IS PROUD TO ANNOUNCE
“THE PAIN OF FEELING”

THE ITALIAN SOLO EXHIBITION
OF ANTHONY LISTER,

FROM MARCH 7 TO APRIL 11, 2009
The show will present new, unreleased works by the artist
Born in Brisbane 30 years ago, based in New York for 3 years, Anthony Lister comes back to Italy with new works.

After the 2007 edition of Allarmi in Como, the group exhibition entitled Kick off at KGallery in 2007 and the solo exhibition “God’s got a plan to kill me” in April 2008, the new Lister’s exhibition entitled “The Pain of Feeling” open in KGallery, Legnano, on March 07 (until April 11, 2009).

Anthony Lister, indeed one of the most sensational contemporary artists, paints on large canvas taking inspiration from street art as well as ordinary life. Superheroes are revisited and deformed through an almost minimal style. A style that becomes absolutely individual and recognizable, 100% original despite the overexposure of the icons. “The work is about sexual content online – Anthony Lister says about  “The Pain of Feeling – and the drive for young women to behave like their misguided rolmodels”

Lister’s solo exhibitions in the past months, scattered all around the world, from London to New York, from Melbourne to San Francisco, from Miami to Los Angeles, have made some of his works true relics, at the center of discussions in the world  of collectionism.

Last Night’s Openings

Last night my friends and I made it to four gallery openings.

Pam Glew Flag

We started at Pam Glew‘s show at Stella Dore. There are a few pieces that are pretty cool and her bleeching technique is interesting, but I think I’ve become a bit jaded by street art. I couldn’t keep from thinking: “portraits from a one-layer stencil” And of course, those seem to be everywhere these days. My friend who doesn’t obsessively follow street art didn’t have that same bias, and really enjoyed everything. Continue reading “Last Night’s Openings”

Bristol Graffiti Show – Crimes of Passion

I probably won’t be able to make it to this, but if you live it Bristol it sounds fantastic.

Crimes Of Passion: Street Art in Bristol

This Spring Bristol’s oldest and grandest gallery, the Royal West Of England Academy is throwing open all 5 of it’s galleries to host a major show by 50 of the city’s best known and most successful graffiti and street artists. This is the first major show of its kind in the city since the Arnolfini’s groundbreaking 1985 show, Graffiti Art and is a full-blown celebration of the city’s rich and diverse contemporary scene.

Bristol has nurtured many of the UK’s most successful graffiti and street artists, including 3D, Inkie, Banksy, Nick Walker, Sickboy, Cyclops and TCF Crew, to name but a few. The city continues to be a breeding ground for a wealth of exceptional creative talent and continues to have one of the UK’s most diverse and thriving scenes.

Crimes Of Passion takes the love of (and heartfelt dedication to) the art form as its starting point, but is far from a typical gallery retrospective, all the artists will be showing completely new work, as well as installation pieces and working both directly onto (and into) the walls of the gallery.

Crimes of Passion will also include a city-wide programme of large-scale painting, a photographic exhibition,a film season at local arts cinema The Cube  (www.cubecinema.com) and a series of workshops and talks.

Exhibition venue:
Royal West of England Academy, Queen’s Rd, Bristol

Exhibition dates:
21st March – 2nd May

Artists involved in the show include Cyclops, Inkie, Mudwig, Nick Walker, Sickboy, Xenz and many many many more.

If anybody goes, please let me know how it is.

My Plans for Thursday

This Thursday is going to be, as it always seems to be, a very busy night for me. I’ll be visiting up to 4 galleries with a traveling brigade of my artsy friends. Here’s the plan:

1. Start at White Cube Hoxton Square for the Marcus Harvey exhibit “White Riot” for the portrait of Thatcher made out of sex toys and the bust of Churchill with a mohawk. Get there around closing time so that we can be unceremoniously tossed out at 6pm.

2. Next it’s off to Stella Dore for the Pam Glew show “Noir”. I’m not yet sold on her work, but I’m definitely open to seeing what she’s doing and the painting pictured on the advert they gave me is pretty sweet.

3. Perhaps the most surprising show of the evening will be at the Pure Evil Gallery. Panik, a member of London’s ATG crew, will be trying his hand a gallery work. I give this a 75% chance of not working out but just being a fun experience. It seems like graffiti artists usually can’t make that jump to the gallery. Panik’s work is awesome on the street, but the gallery is a completely different world. If it works though, as I’m hoping it will, it should be great.

4. And to cap off the evening, Part2ism has his show at The Art Lounge.

Armsrock Solo at Andenken

I wish I were headed back to Colorado before this summer, because one of my favorite artists is going to be showing at Denver’s Andenken Gallery this week. Armsrock‘s solo show entitled “The end of the world came and went without Mr. Jones noticing a single thing.” opens this Friday (March 6th).

Andenken Armsrock

Armsrock’s images capture the city and tell raw and unfiltered truths. Sometimes this means the images are violent and a bit scary, but they are always powerful and interesting. Here’s some work for the Andenken Show

Loving this stuff. Personally, I own two pieces from Armsrock, including a really cool diarama sort of thing that sits nicely on my desk, but this work is a whole new level.

Flip Comes to LA

Brazilian street artist Flip has a solo show soon at The Carmichael Gallery in LA. Here’s some preview photos and the PR. I haven’t seen too much of Flip’s work before, but it looks to be pretty beautiful stuff.

Flip on Wood

“Seiva Bruta”

A solo exhibition of new artwork by Flip

Opening reception: Thursday, March 5th 2009 / 7.00pm – 10.00pm

Exhibition Dates: March 5th – March 26th 2009

Carmichael Gallery of Contemporary Art is proud to present Seiva Bruta, the
first West Coast solo exhibition of work by Brazilian artist Flip. Artwork
featured in the exhibition will include acrylic, ink and mixed media on
wood, canvas, and paper as well as a site specific installation. An opening
reception will be held on Thursday, March 5th, 2009 from 7.00pm – 10.00pm
with Flip in attendance.  The exhibition will be open for viewing through
Thursday, March 26th, 2009 from 1.00pm – 7.00pm.

In Seiva Bruta, Flip continues his exploration of the natural world and the
relationships that exist within it. In this new body of work, he interprets
plant sap as the blood of plants, comparing and contrasting it with the
blood of animals.

“I make a parallel between the fluid and the blood,” comments Flip. “Nerves,
veins, and roots.feelings, diseases, patterns all mixed up.”

With an environmentally-flavored color palette and textural variations
created by a unique approach to Asian calligraphy, Flip offers a fresh,
intuitive voice to the international contemporary art scene.
