Weekend link-o-rama

Zéh Palito and Tosko

It is time for me to get a reasonable number of hours of sleep. Until I have to get up in the morning. Here’s what we didn’t get to write about on Vandalog this week:

The Living Walls Conference 2012

The 2012 Living Walls Conference is about to begin, and the line-up of events and murals has finally been announced. Once again, I’ll be participating at the conference. I’ll be speaking at a panel on the issue of gender, hosting an evening of short films and maybe doing a Pecha Kucha talk if I come up with something to talk about.

But of course, the highlight of Living Walls is going to be the murals. For this year’s conference, the festival organizers have decided to go with an (almost) all-women lineup of muralists including Fefe, Hyuro, Miso, Cake and Olive47, plus photographers Martha Cooper and Teen Witch.

Other speakers at the conference include Living Walls alums LNY and Gaia, as well as Ian Wilson, who recently organized the Wall\Therapy mural festival in Rochester, NY.

Living Walls will take place August 15th-19th, with special events every day. For the full lineup a comprehensive listing of events, check the Living Walls facebook event.

Whitecross Street Party

This weekend saw the return of the Whitecross Street Party and the Rise of the Non-Conformists Art Show. Each year, the event gets bigger and bigger featuring an array of talented artists that display their work for several months in the heart of London. Always a fan of White Cross, this year’s line-up was the best yet featuring large scale works by Malarky, Ronzo, Shepard Fairey, Conor Harrington and so many more which will be on display until September.

Below are just some teaser images of the work, but check back for pictures of the antics from the weekend.

Brass Knuckle Crew presents 2nd East Coast Sticker Show in Bushwick, Brooklyn

A number of months ago, Jice 1 and Rid 1 of the BKC put out a call for stickers for its second East Coast sticker show. The response was obviously tremendous as the exhibit held yesterday in Bushwick featured thousands of stickers – from simple tags to somewhat sophisticated  pieces — covering every available space of the Ivy House Studio. The event was an opportunity for sticker heads to not only trade stickers but also to share black books. Here are some more images:

The Painted Desert Project – round 1, post 3

Labrona and Gaia

This is post #3 and in our series about The Painted Desert Project. You can see posts 1 and 2 here and here. The first round of The Painted Desert Project took place last month in the Navajo Nation and was an effort by Jetsonorama and Yote to use art to help improve the local economy. Gaia, Overunder, Doodles, Labrona, Jetsonorama, Tom Greyeyes and Breeze put up art as part of this round of the project, and there will be at least one more group of artists visiting in the future. After the jump, we have photos of work by Jetsonorama, Breeze, Gaia, Labrona and Doodles, as well as a couple of shots of Jetsonorama of the artists at work and play… Continue reading “The Painted Desert Project – round 1, post 3”

Brandalism: Mass-takeover of British billboards

Paul Insect in Leeds

Brandalism is a large-scale billboard hijacking project up right now throughout England. The organizers have put artwork over ads in Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and London over the past few days, and they’ve worked with dozens of artists from 8 countries to do it. So far, about 35 billboards have been taken over and replaced with art, but there may be as many as 50 when the project is finished. The project calls itself the “the world’s first international, collaborative subvertising project,” which is not true, but it is still very exciting and a high-impact way to show what could be in our public spaces instead of advertising. Some fantastic artists have contributed to the project including Jordan Seiler, OX, Ron English, Cleon Peterson, Paul Insect and Know Hope.

You can read more about Brandalism in The Independent or on the project website.

Check a bunch more disruptions from the Brandalism project after the jump… Continue reading “Brandalism: Mass-takeover of British billboards”

The Painted Desert Project – round 1, post 2

Tom Greyeyes

This is part 2 of our series of The Painted Desert Project, in which Gaia, Overunder, Doodles, Labrona, Jetsonorama, Tom Greyeyes and Breeze painted and wheatpasted in the Navajo Nation in northern Arizona. The first post can be found here.

Here’s how Overunder describes the impetus for the project:

The Painted Desert Project began as Jetsonorama, aka Chip Thomas pasted one of his photographs on an abandoned roadside stand only to return months down the road and see the very same stand now open for business. Amazed, he pulled over and chatted with the folks only to learn that their impetus to re-open was based on seeing tourists stop to take photos of the art work. They figured it was the best captive audience they’d seen in years and the only thing to make it better was if there was another one for traffic going the opposite direction. Unabashadly Chip let them know about his altar ego Jetsonorama and the cogs started turning.

Before the paste could dry Chip and fellow street artist Yote had a plan to bring some of their favorite artist to the Painted Desert to paint run-down stands in an attempt to rejuvenate the life of those in need of business and as Chip states, “explore how this might build community.”

Overunder has more about his part in the project on his blog.

After the jump, we have photos of work by Jetsonorama, Doodles and Gaia… Continue reading “The Painted Desert Project – round 1, post 2”
