Not much to say this week except of course that I’m pumped for The Art of Comedy. Not too much news either, but some important stories…

Bonhams is holding an Urban Art auction in LA (Christ, 5 years after I first heard it and I still hate that term). This has been going on in England for years and of course Doyles New York just did something similar in NYC, but this is the first time Bonhams is doing an Urban Art auction in the USA. Notable lots include this absolutely classic Banksy, some very expensive kindling, an alright Shepard Fairey (a bit special since his originals don’t go to auction often), a Calvin Klein ad by KAWS, a nice Barry McGee panel from 1996, another nice Banksy, one of Chaz Bojórquez’ Señor Suerte stencils on canvas, and a large COST and REVS collaboration from the early 1990’s (yes, its legit, and yes, I would like to hang it in my dorm room if anyone feels like gifting me $20,000).
Caleb Neelon recently painted some work in Turkey.
Butterfly and Opera Gallery London have teamed up for a show of 33 artists including Sweet Toof, El Mac, Roa, Shepard Fairey, Ron English and many more. It opens next month.

Weekend link-o-rama

It seems that the world never slows down. I’m supposed to be on vacation and it’s been one of my busiest weeks all year, so here’s what’s been going on elsewhere across the web:

Ever thought that Times Square would look a lot better covered in art instead of ads? Well so have a lot of people, and now Times Square Art Square is trying to make that vision a reality. They have a Kickstarter going to try to fund the idea.
JR has a new mural up in DC.
Le Plagiste Cie painted these charming tributes to some famous major corporations.
Doyle New York’s street art auction set a record for Margaret Kilgallen, but much of the rest of the auction went as expected.

Sounds like Supreme will be doing a Basquiat line soon.
There’s a Kickstarter project worth checking out with the goal of making a film about street art in Chile.
Daryll Peirce has done his first print with 1xRun.
MOMO has a book out with Studiocromie.
I love this new wall from Jade.
A great piece of (I think) contemporary train graffiti.
Egyptian photographers and street artists have put together an expansive book of revolutionary graffiti and street art. Read about it here, and read it online here.
Ron English, Bigfoot and others have work in this upcoming charity auction in New York for the St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

Street art auction at Doyle New York

Doyle New York has organized the first art auction in NYC based around the work of street artists and graffiti writers. The auction will take place on Tuesday, October 16th. Some of the highlights of the auction include work by Richard Hambleton and LAII, Margaret Kilgallen, Date Farmers, Shepard Fairey, Todd James, and Bast. And I’m curious to see how Adam Neate will do seeing as he has only shown in the UK and Asia. Should be an interesting evening.

It is time for me to get a reasonable number of hours of sleep. Until I have to get up in the morning. Here’s what we didn’t get to write about on Vandalog this week:

These two prints from Tristan Eaton and Everlast come from 1xRun and benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, so you’ve got great artists, a great print studio and a great cause all in one package, but less than one week left to buy.
Two updates on Hyuro’s wall in Atlanta: The neighborhood organization has voted to ask the property owner to remove the mural, and someone vandalized it anyway.
This freight by MERS is stunning.
This piece by Batis is pretty great too.
Buff Monster, David Meade and friends of Vandalog Hrag Vartanian and Adam COST will be speaking on a panel at Doyle New York next week in anticipation of their upcoming street art auction.
NYC has some great art on its trucks and vans.
Endless Canvas’ Special Delivery warehouse show looks like it’s got some cool work from Swampy, GATS, Feral Child and others, but really it’s clear that photos do not do the show justice and that you had to be there.
Adam Neate has a solo show coming up at Elms Lesters in London.
And Gris1 has a solo show coming up in Marseille.
My final show to mention this week is Roa’s show opening on Saturday at 941 Geary in SF.

SFMOMA as acquired a huge Margaret Kilgallen piece.
Invader actually sent a space invader to space.
Leon Reid IV’s The Hundred Story House project has been installed and is now active.

Young New Yorkers

Young New York: A Silent Art Auction & Fundraiser is an fundraising initiative for the Young New Yorkers (YNY) program, which aids and raises awareness for teens who have been legally classified “adults” and thrown into New York State’s adult criminal justice system.

The silent action will be happening Tuesday May 29th from 6pm-10pm at WhiteBoxes projects, and feature works by Steve “ESPO” Powers, LNY, Steven Holl, Gaia, Labrona, NohjColey, the YOK, ASVP, Doodles, Radical!, Feral Child, Cake, Ian Kuali’i and many others. All proceeds will go toward enabling workshops with successful artists, designers, teachers and social workers who will use creative theraputic methods to reach out to these teens in New York State’s criminal justice system.

Caroline and I were in Baltimore this week checking out Open Walls Baltimore. If you have the chance, definitely make a trip over there. Full posts about Baltimore coming soon. Point is, between Baltimore and moving this weekend, I’ve been lax this week. Things should return to normal on Wednesday or Thursday, but in the mean time, here’s what I’ve been meaning to post about:

An update on the Kidult/Marc Jacobs situation: Marc Jacobs have turned a photo of the vandalism (or maybe commissioned tag) into a t-shirt that they are selling for $689, and at least one has sold already.
Barry McGee’s show at Prism (his second, if you include his 2-man show with Phil Frost) has opened and is of course a must-see.
Okay yes, it’s another Shepard Fairey show with images we’ve seen before, but there are a few gems in there. Specifically, the painted printing plates.
A Basquiat painting went for over $16 million at a Phillips de Pury auction.
This piece by Phlegm is one of my favorites from him in a while.
Tes One and Bask collaborated on this dinosaur-themed mural in Florida.
This group show at Opera Gallery’s NYC location looks like a top-tier show for being a group show. Anthony Lister, Interesni Kazki, Roa, Mark Jenkins, Bast, Swoon, Faile, so many more…
Nychos and his crew paint some crazy stuff.
Afeura, a mural festival in Peru, is using Kickstarter to raise funds for the project. So far, Escif, Bastardilla, Desertor and Jade have signed on to painting at the festival.
In a move of crass commercialism reminding us that perhaps street art is dead, some artist made a really beautiful mural for the sole purpose of releasing a print of the same image.
Sonni (the guy who did that crazy boom box in Miami) has a show opening this month in New York.
Faile released some new prints on their website this week (sold out already of course), and intend to do so much more often from now on.
The DMV and 1984 crews pulled the crazy stunt of putting on a one-day illegal show in Paris on the day of the French elections.
Depoe is part of a two-man show opening on Saturday evening in New York. He has preview photos here.

Weekend link-o-rama

Happy almost Halloween. It’s been a week of wasted energy, or so it seems. A potential legal wall that I was organizing has fallen through for the time being, but hopefully things are just delayed rather than cancelled. Here’s some of what I should have posted about this week:

Reported, this sculpture at Occupy London was made and left there by Banksy, but that claim is unconfirmed by Banksy so far. Nonetheless, Zeus added this modification to the piece. And Above has also made some work in solidarity with the Occupy movement. Similarly to K-Guy’s work at Occupy London, I’m conflicted here. On the one hand, it’s great when artists who know how to get headlines do so in solidarity with a political movement of sorts, but on the other hand these artists are of course latching on to the movement and associating themselves with it in a way that they know will get headlines and potentially help them sell some paintings. Of course the same could be said of many of the celebrity speakers who have been generally well-received at Occupy events. So there’s that dilemma to think about.
Faile are the latest artists to hit the wall at Bowery and Houston.
Last time I was in NYC, I saw this billboard for Hennessy cognac with designs by Kaws. Just interesting to see the flip from a decade ago when Kaws would have modified that billboard illegal to insert his work onto it in an effort to associate with the Hennessy brand, and now Hennessy pays Kaws to associate with their brand. Also, this new Kaws/Snoopy toy goes on sale today on Kaws’ website. Okay, one last bit of Kaws news: I love this new painting by him.

This weekend I’ll be in Boston. If you have any ideas for what I should get up to, leave a comment. I’ll definitely be checking out Swoon’s installation at the ICA Boston. Here’s what’s been going on in street art while I’ve been locked in my room studying all week:

Steve Powers aka ESPO designed some beer cozies for The World’s Best Ever. They’re pretty okay, but should your beer cozy really be more than pretty okay? I would honestly feel a bit weird of my beer cozy had some brilliant high-brow design on it. Much more impressive is the latest in Powers’ Love Letter series.
Philips de Pury and MTV had a charity auction for MTV’s Staying Alive Foundation, with particularly nice work by Shepard Fairey and Faile.
Stik’s latest solo show just opened in London.
Some beautiful pieces by Sam3 in Porto, Portugal.
AvoidPi designed the latest cover of Showpaper.
Blu’s latest mural is in Greece.
A nice booth for Joshua Liner Galler at Pulse in LA.
Mr. Brainwash has a show opening soon in LA, but it’s going to be full of other people’s art. Anyone can submit work to be wheatpasted around the exhibition. On the one hand, yay, artists can benefit from Mr. Brainwash’s stupid fame and hype. On the other hand, I guess Mr. Brainwash has acknowledged that he doesn’t have any ideas for art, so he’s just openly benefiting from the art of others to further his own art career. So it’s mutually beneficial, except that individual artists submitting work will gain a lot less from this arrangement than Mr. Brainwash will gain overall.
