Resplendent Semblance Print Release

Tiger Rabbit, 30″ x 36″, five color hand pulled screen print on 90lb Stonehenge with Maxwell Colette and Pawn Works.

People have been asking me to release a print of this image for some time now. I can’t tell you how many times when I’ve come to the table to do an edition with a gallery, this piece has been their outright first suggestion. Well finally, the Tiger Rabbit image is now available through Maxwell Colette and Pawn Works.

Resplendent Semblance Part 1: Crushing Chicago

I was fortunate enough to be able to spend two weeks prior to the opening of Resplendent Semblance getting up in Chicago with the incredible support of the folks over at Pawn Works. Literally every night was spent in preparation and posting work. Being able to get up on Cabrini Green, the Robert Taylor Homes, and the projects by midway was a dream come true and made the trip that much more worth while. We’ve developed a google map of all of the legal and street locations which can be viewed here. This post doesn’t have them all but you get the idea, the rest after the jump.

Some New Sol25

Shot by Jaime Rojo

After a little hibernation, the streets of New York are thawing with the welcoming rays of Sol25. These peculiar figures bring a sense of humor and excitement to a scene that has truly waned over the past couple of years. So thank you mr Sol for keeping the dream alive, albeit while staying within the comfort of Williamsburg. More photos from BSA after the jump.

Resplendent Semblance At Maxwell Colette and Pawnworks

The press release:

Maxwell Colette Gallery and Pawn Works Present
GAIA: Resplendent Semblance
March 25th – May 7, 2011
Opening Reception: Friday, March 25th 2011 / 6 – 9pm

Pawn Works and Maxwell Colette Gallery have joined forces to bring internationally lauded contemporary artists to Chicago, who are known for their involvement in the Street Art movement.  The first of these joint ventures, GAIA: Resplendent Semblance, launches this month with a series of projects showcasing the artist Gaia.  The events will include a show of new, large scale paintings and decollage on wood art works at Maxwell Colette Gallery, a site specific installation and show featuring additional pieces at the Pawn Works space and a massive window installation at State Street and Adams presented in conjunction with The Chicago Loop Alliance’s Pop Up Art Loop initiative.

Gaia’s art is best known for his large scale renderings of human and animal forms, often in states of hybridization.  Animals fuse with humans or other animals, blending visual characteristics and layers of spiritual and mythological relevance.  Reclaiming a long dormant visual iconography, Gaia’s images transcend cultural literacy, achieving significance on multiple levels.  As contemporary urban culture deemphasizes nature, Gaia invades the city of glass, steel and concrete with a breathtaking reminder of earth and life.  Functioning as a contemporary visual shaman, he facilitates uniquely urban interactions with postmodern spirit guides who in turn force us to acknowledge our lost connection with the natural and the mystical worlds.

Pawn Works and Maxwell Colette Gallery will co-host an opening reception for GAIA:Resplendent Semblance at Maxwell Colette Gallery on Friday, March 25th from 6 – 9 pm.  The artist will be in attendance.

And they’re baaaaack. The supreme street team is at it again this time plastering new york with Lady Gaga’s beautiful visage. Of course you can expect the people working for Supreme to vent their pent up vendettas against other artists while out plastering this bull shit.

Homeland: A Wet-Plate Collodion Photo-Essay

Just caught wind of what is turning out to be an incredible project from Imminent Disaster. Check out the Kickstarter, because money talks, but please take the time to support however you can. More from Disaster on the project after the jump.

“Homeland” is a Wet-Plate Collodion photo essay focusing on grassroots efforts to rebuild life after the collapse of the American economy. By documenting communities and individuals in NYC and across the country, this project aims to connect disparate communities and individuals into a national movement with common ideological threads. The range of projects documented will include urban farms, bicycle collectives, off-the grid homes, alternative fuel producers, art and theatre collectives, community dinners, free schools and after-school programs, squats, itinerants, tent cities and other grassroots social practices.

So you might have heard me talking about Wet-Plate photos, or mentioning that I might be leaving town on a cross-country trip at some undetermined date in the future. Both of these things are true and part of one and the same thing, which is a project I have been brewing up since last November. I am finally at a point where I am confident the project is happening. I just bought the car on Monday, a VW Golf Diesel, which gets about 50mpg, that I can run on biodiesel, from a funny man on Staten Island that I’m still dealing with to get the title figured out.

New Gaia on Howard Street

This piece on Howard St is the rooster messenger cradling the head of St John as depicted by Guido Reni. The photoseries was shot by local Baltimore Larry Cohen and the set can be seen in its entirety here http://www.flickr.com/photos/ishotbaltimore/sets/72157626026085788/ . Of course much props to Nanook for the help as well who can be seen scaling the back of the small billboard to tear off the excess pieces at the top for me.
