MAKE of the Russian Partizaning Collective did this fantastic and simply ad disruption in the New York City subway with paper, glue, and scissors. MAKE was inspired to do this disruption after Apple charged him over $200 to fix the cracked screen on his own iPad. More of the story can be found here.
Remember the retrospective of the fantastic Barry McGee last year in California? Exciting news: That show is headed to the ICA Boston next month. The show, simply titled Barry McGee, runs April 6th-September 2nd. Last year’s Os Gemeos show at the ICA was great, but it was small if you don’t include their outdoor work. This McGee show won’t be small, and it covers his work from the early 90’s through to today. Not much else to say yet except that you should see this one if it’s at all possible.
The Free Art and Technology (F.A.T.) Lab, founded by Evan Roth and James Powderly in 2007, have a retrospective opening April 1st at Eyebeam in NYC. F.A.T. Gold, curated by Lindsay Howard, will include highlights of F.A.T. Lab’s work so far as well as new work and a whole boatload of events throughout the first week of the show’s run. This amazing group of artists (including some of my favorites: Jayson Musson, Evan Roth, and KATSU) are at the forefront of technology, art and pop culture, and particularly the intersection of all three.
F.A.T. Gold runs April 1st through the 20th. There will be an opening on the 1st from 7-9pm. For a list of all the F.A.T. Gold events, check the press release (PDF WARNING).
I am extremely saddened that I won’t be able to make the opening of this show or many of the events. So, please make me extremely jealous and check this out if at all possible.
Logan Hicks has organized an online auction to benefit the PTA at his son Sailor’s school, PS 132 in Brooklyn. Toe The Line includes contributions from Joe Iurato, Swoon, Shepard Fairey, Chris Stain, Dabs and Myla, How and Nosm, Eric Haze, Faile, and others. Logan’s girlfriend and Sailor’s mother Kristen Zarcadoolas is the PTA president of PS 132, and they organized the auction after after yet another funding cut at the school.
“There is a lack of resources at every level within the public school system and I want to do all that I can to ensure that my son has a proper education,” says Hicks. “There is a moral responsibility to do everything possible to help support the public education.”
Bit of a shorter link-o-rama this week. I’ve been with my parents in Colorado, trying to get some work done on my upcoming book. The hope is that Viral Art will be released for free online in mid-June. There’s still a fair bit of work left to do though. Anyway, the links…
Paul Insect and Sweet Toof have been getting up around London. It looks like his time spent with Bast while in NYC recently may have influenced him a bit, as some of Paul Insect’s work is in a more naive style reminiscent of Bast or Haring that I don’t think I’ve seen from him before. Looks good.
LNY recently painted this mural, Golden Hour, at 22 East 2nd Street in New York City for Fourth Arts Block. It’s the same spot previously painted by Know Hope, Phlegm, and Faith47. Great work. Reminds of me Erica il Cane.
Here’s what LNY has to say about the piece:
It’s based on a couple of things; a beached whale found dead in NYC after Sandy, the battle between nature and human technology and the economic factors that facilitate this situation. The whole image should read as this struggle for survival between the whale/oil transit ship and the two headed heron snake that represents nature turning to technology by literally changing its body from one end to the other… I also decided on a title “Golden Hour” after the medical term meaning the period of time after traumatic injury during which treatment is most likely to prevent death.
Yesterday MOCAtv (MOCA Los Angeles’ YouTube channel) announced an open call for content for the channel. Jeffrey Deitch, Carlo McCormick, Martha Cooper, Ethel Seno, and I will be reviewing content on YouTube with “#MOCATVUPLOAD” in the video title and then selecting the best of those films for inclusion on MOCAtv. Read more about the project here.
Loving this piece by OX. One billboard take over is interesting, two of the same and these anti-ads begin to really look like ads (but for nothing except maybe freedom from ads).
