Lush: $ale!! On Street Art

December 21st, 2010 | By | 9 Comments »

Lush has a solo show on right now at Backwoods Gallery in Melbourne, Australia. When it comes to active graffiti writers, Lush is one of my favorites. I don’t write about him often here though because his work is so often explicit and NSFW, but with this show, there is just so much good stuff in one place that I couldn’t not post some photos. Lush is the jester of the street art and graffiti worlds. Check some images from the show after the jump, but just a warning that a number of them are NSFW and possibly offensive just for the sake of being offensive…

Okay, so he is a bit heavy on the Banksy criticism, but who is more recognizable and deserving of a bit of criticism?

And here’s one sketch that didn’t make it into a finished piece:

Check out more photos on Backwoods Gallery’s website. Also, the show runs through the 23rd, so there’s still a bit of time to see it in person.

“I don’t write about him often here though because his work is so often explicit and NSFW…” RJ you should really give up, you sound more like a young Republican than you do the editor of a so called art site. It’s borderline disgraceful.

Bucky, you’ve declared this website dead. You said that my position on the Blu/MOCA debacle was either a sign of the apocalypse or the end of this website (not sure which). You’ve called me a pussy. And yet… Here you are. Still reading Vandalog. And reading it religiously enough to read this and comment within a few hours of it being posted.

Just because I know the website is dead doesn’t mean others don’t and I have no problem quickly scanning the 1 or 2 posts you’ve done, take 30 seconds and commenting to expose how terrible of an editor you are.

What’s NSFW before I wade in

Well it all depends on your work environment I guess, but I would say that any of the following could qualify as NSFW (although admittedly some are probably fine and maybe it’s just the combination of it all together that makes me uncomfortable with not warning people before they see the images):
Muslim Woman wearing a scarf but showing her breasts
    The Space Invader pieces
The bicycle (that’s a dildo on the seat of the bike)
The bestiality and pedophilia in the Keith Haring drawings

All I see is criticise of most media covered artworks from guys making graffiti or “street art”.
Very cynical in deed. But very easy to destroy some graphic brand / derivative art forms reproduced on canvases.
What about showing independant and constructive forms of art inspired by urban feelings if LUSH find that all artworks shown in gallery are crap ?

kinda funny that hes making fun of all those gallery street artists by doing a gallery show. maybe thats the point but its funny either way. I dig it even though i also enjoy a lot of those artists. gotta keep these “career” street artists on their toes cuz so much street art is just straight up uninspired
