TrustoCorp Bombs Over MBW Work

I really do not advocate artists tagging over others’ work usually (unless it is absolute shit/Waterloo Tunnel/or the artist does it himself), but in this case I applaud TrustoCorp for doing what other artists have wanted to for awhile: vandalize MBW’s street art. Granted the guy is a joke, and his portrayal in Exit Through the Gift Shop did not exactly help to improve his credibility in the art world. TrustoCorps’s work is a physical manifestation of the discussion around Mr.Brainwash and his so called “art” so I smiled when I woke up this morning and saw these pictures. I especially liked the use of the phrase “Locals Only” which harkens back to summer memories of New Yorkers invading my beach on the Jersey Coast. Go away MBW and stop putting up street art. I would rather see a 14-year-old bombing for the first time paint on a wall then see your post modern Warhol wannabe stencils on the streets. And while I’m ranting, Dear Bennies, please stay off the Jersey beaches. Love Stephanie.

I think that people going over other people’s work is for toys. (just look at Omar) It is a way too slippery a slope to interject one’s opinion about who’s work is worthy to go over and who’s is not. If you don’t like the work, don’t support the artist and go do something better. just my .02

who’s to say who is local and who isn’t? ny is full of non-locals. transplants. people who live here for 10 years…those still aren’t “locals.” if trusto is going to “police” the streets, they should tag over OBEY, banksy, fafi, even keith haring because he wasn’t “local.” graffiti tourism is what makes this city beautiful, not petty vandalism.

That’s not really what TrustoCorp means, I think. The phrase “Locals Only” relays multiple meanings. Here I think it is more about MBW not being part of the recognized street art community. It is such a tight knit and small group around the world that comment and support each other’s work and MBW really isn’t accepted into that because of his street philosophy (or lack thereof) and blatant disregard for presenting innovative ideas within his art.

I agree with NonLocal, the phrase ‘Locals Only’ has a quite sinister sectarian feel to it, and the whole thing is somewhat reminiscent of the fascist denunciation of “Degenerate Art”

Besides. this ‘recognised street art community’ you speak of sounds hideously elitist to me. Maybe this tight knit inner circle you mention have a vested interest in acting the gatekeepers of the increasingly dull and stagnant ‘urban art’ scene, and therefore resent MBW’s financial success and also the way he has (perhaps unwittingly) blatantly exposed the dirty little secret which underpins the whole genre…that people will buy into any old shit if it’s hyped enough.

I thought street art was meant to be about breaking down barriers and open to anyone, but it seems like a hierarchical establishment has once again been created, with experts, influential cliques, critics, etc. It’s rapidly become just another dull, staid and bloated offshoot of the mainstream contemporary art world.

Perhaps MBW didn’t collude enough with the so called intellectuals who like to set themselves up as the arbiters of taste, and so has incurred their wrath and exclusion. I’ve never personally been a fan of MBW, but I must admit I’m warming to him now if he’s managed to piss off the sneering middle-class po-faced architects of cultural apartheid who seem to think they can dictate the very narrow self-serving conventions of their boring cabal onto everybody else.

Only newbies don’t understand that there are rules!

Mr BW is wack, badly ripping off the subjects & styles of others. Capping his work is a confrontation, a ‘step up or f*ck off’ message. Nobody likes taggers coming into their neighbourhood & fucking shit up. The same goes for f*ckwits like Mr BW, he can do album covers, work on canvas but he’s only really welcome in hipster areas.
