Great in ’08: Gaia Says…

December 14th, 2008 | By | 2 Comments »

As part of Vandalog’s “Great in ’08″ series, which will be running every day for the rest of the month. Check out previous posts here. Street artists from across the world have been given one post to give away to one artist who they feel has been doing great work recently. Today it’s Gaia’s turn (if you missed it, he was L.E.T.‘s pick yesterday). This response was actually taken from a larger Q&A with Gaia that will be posted on Vandalog as soon as I get my university applications in (I’ll hit “submit” this Friday).

Who is one artist doing really great work right now?

Gaia: The one person who has been really making a splash is the writer Booker/ReadMoreBooks/Rancour/HoodRich. While he has been getting up for quite some time now, his recent slew of rollers that he has pulled off in the past year are astounding. Always imaginative, always clean, and he has such a unique and free style.

If Booker has a website or flickr account that I don’t know about, somebody please let me know so I can link to it.

Thanks to Becki Fuller (AKA RFullerRD), Steve Rotman (funkandjazz – www.flickr.com/photos/phunk), and Danny Dawson (quasistoic) for photos, and Luna Park for both photos and her suggestions about which of his pieces to show here.

    now this is cool
all the other people getting recommended as doing great stuff are just making simple images, stencils of faces, images of things that have no relevance to anything (Eelus!?!?! he hasn’t put work in the street for years!)
this stuff is so much more interesting than another C215 stencil of a face. And a massive sign saying “READ”!?!?! that’s fucking awesome!
    political
and the styles are fresh considering he’s hanging over the top of high buildings doing roll-downs…

Ben, although I agree with you that Booker’s style is very fresh and interesting, I dunno if I’d say other artists’ picks have been irrelevant or boring. I think C215 does some really cool work, and a lot of the other picks have been great too. Know Hope, Herakut, Vhils, and Anthony Lister are a few of my favs that have been mentioned.

I’m glad that Gaia picked Booker though, for the same reason I’m glad Peru Ana Ana Peru picked the ADHD Kids (http://blog.vandalog.com/2008/12/great-in-08-peru-ana-ana-peru-says/). Not only is the work cool, but personally I’m exposed to much more street art than graffiti, so it’s always good to see some graffiti that I like.
