Slow week, but that doesn’t mean nothing good happened. Here’s some of it…

Love this drawing by Pixote.
It seems that Hrag Vartanian was not a big fan of Les Ballets De Faile, Faile’s project with the New York City Ballet. Personally, I really liked to the project. Yes, Hrag is right in pointing out that people were expecting more (like Faile having involvement with set design and costumes), but what Faile did do was, I think, a major success. Nine artists out of ten would have seriously messed up this sort of collaboration by not striking the right balance between completely ignoring the setting and embracing it too much. Ignore the setting, and the work could just have been shown anywhere and would have looked out of place. Go too far in trying to bend the work to the situation, and the artists’ essence is lost and the whole thing comes off as a cheesy joke. Faile struck just the right balance. There was a lot of classic Faile, mixed in with some new ballet-inspired imagery, but the ballet-inspired imagery didn’t look out of place at all. Faile’s work has always had a mix of grit and classical beauty, that ballet with their spin fit perfectly into that. I’ve got to disagree with Hrag on another point and say that I thought the work looked like it fit in just as well as anything else in the theater, particularly the massive “Tower of Faile” piece.
Thoughts on Crummy Gummy? I’m not sure what I think. Another Mr. Brainwash-inspired derivative artist who never needs to be mentioned again, or actually kinda funny?

The British Zeus had a solo show open this week at London’s Graffik Gallery. It’s open through the 21st.

Back to school on Tuesday. Actually, I’m okay with that. And of course, it means more time blogging because it means more time procrastinating. Here’s some of what we missed this week while Caroline and I were on vacation:

And Elbowtoe put up a huge new wheatpaste based on one of his collages.
Martha Cooper and Ian Cox discuss photographing the Paris edition of The Underbelly Project.
Dan Witz has a show coming up at Lazarides’ Rathbone Place location.
Zeus (British, not French) also has a show coming up in London.
And then there’s the show with Nice One and Lucx at Chicago’s Galerie F which opened on Friday night.
Complex.com has some advice for success as a street artist from Kid Zoom, How&Nosm, Eric Haze, and others. Kid Zoom’s tip? “Don’t be a street artist.”

Weekend link-o-rama

Here’s some stuff I missed this week while sitting under a giant stack of books and papers to read, mostly stuff I was supposed to read for school but avoided because I was at Nuart last weekend.

The British Zeus recently had a solo show in London. Sandra Butterfly got the photos.
These throw-ups by CES mixing letters and characters are fantastic.
White Walls Say Nothing is hopefully about to be a film about street art in Buenos Aires, but they are doing a Kickstarter project to raise the last $32,000 needed to finish it.
A great quick video interview with Ron English. Must see for his fans.
Sowat, Lek and John Giorno painted two walls at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris.
This mural festival in Puerto Rico includes Jaz, Ever, Roa, Aryz, Celso, La Pandilla and others.

It’s a mega link-o-rama this week because I’ve been traveling from last Saturday until Thursday morning.

Here’s a video of Morley’s show at Lazarides Newcastle. When I first saw Morley’s work about a year and a half ago, I thought it was hilarious and touching. Now though, while I appreciate that he has tried to literally make his gallery work 3D and therefore a bit different from what he does on the street, I’m kinda bored of it. Anybody else feeling this way?
Zeus (the British one) has a pop-up show in London next month.
Pez has some great commentary on the transition from the street to the gallery.
Emol, Stinkfish, Zio Ziegler will be showing together at Carmichael Gallery starting August 11th.
Okay, here’s one of the very occasional Olek pieces that I really like, but she got to start with a great shape so I’m not sure how much the yarn helped.
Evol hit up some electrical boxes in Warsaw.
A unicorn expelling rainbows from its mouth and ass.
Some very odd but also oddly beautiful graffiti from Homer.
Even Russia has a mural festival. Of course, the work is pretty tame. Nothing like this piece of Russian street art.
There’s some great work to be spotted along the High Line.
Pixote recently had a show in NYC. Nothing amazing, but it’s interesting to see what Pixote does besides rollers.
This mural in Denver by Shepard Fairey is pretty nice. He’s in town for his part in a show at The Black Book Gallery.

Ripo has a solo show opening next Thursday at White Walls Gallery in San Fransisco.

Weekend link-o-rama

Happy almost Halloween. It’s been a week of wasted energy, or so it seems. A potential legal wall that I was organizing has fallen through for the time being, but hopefully things are just delayed rather than cancelled. Here’s some of what I should have posted about this week:

Reported, this sculpture at Occupy London was made and left there by Banksy, but that claim is unconfirmed by Banksy so far. Nonetheless, Zeus added this modification to the piece. And Above has also made some work in solidarity with the Occupy movement. Similarly to K-Guy’s work at Occupy London, I’m conflicted here. On the one hand, it’s great when artists who know how to get headlines do so in solidarity with a political movement of sorts, but on the other hand these artists are of course latching on to the movement and associating themselves with it in a way that they know will get headlines and potentially help them sell some paintings. Of course the same could be said of many of the celebrity speakers who have been generally well-received at Occupy events. So there’s that dilemma to think about.
Faile are the latest artists to hit the wall at Bowery and Houston.
Last time I was in NYC, I saw this billboard for Hennessy cognac with designs by Kaws. Just interesting to see the flip from a decade ago when Kaws would have modified that billboard illegal to insert his work onto it in an effort to associate with the Hennessy brand, and now Hennessy pays Kaws to associate with their brand. Also, this new Kaws/Snoopy toy goes on sale today on Kaws’ website. Okay, one last bit of Kaws news: I love this new painting by him.

tasj vol ii – issue iii

Seth and I are finally back in LA after our trip to London and Paris. I had jet lag the whole time I was in London, then got it again when I got home, so that wasn’t particularly enjoyable, but other than that we did some fun things. Now we’re working toward Block Party with Boxi, Krystian Truth Czaplicki, Gregor Gaida, Simon Haas and Dan Witz + a showcase with Sixeart, which opens here at Carmichael Gallery on Saturday, November 13, and putting together the Miami issue of tasj.

I just wanted to quickly share some highlights from the current issue of tasj (vol ii – issue iii). As always, it’s free to subscribe to, no matter where you live.

As you can see from the cover, this is Part II of our Backstage Series (see who was in Part I here). One of my favorite interviews is with Mike Vargas and Moni Pineda, who run the web series/blog Friends We Love. I recommend checking out the site if you haven’t been on it yet; there is so much great content up there!

In addition to our Unurth, auction and art fair pages, we also have several new regular sections: Special Event (for shows taking place outside traditional gallery/museum settings – you’ll read about Blk River in here), Stopover (our city guide – this issue highlights London), Limited Edition (for prints and multiples – Faile, Bumblebee, Eine and Zeus are street artists who feature) and Newsstand (an off-shoot of Bookshelf and a place to support our fellow magazines and newspapers).

Eine and Zeus at Ink_d in Brighton

This show looks pretty interesting. Eine and Zeus together at Ink_d Gallery in Brighton. November 27 through December 24th (I feel really bad whoever is dismantling this show on Christmas).

Ink_d says:

For our next show at Ink_d Gallery we bring together two urban art heavyweights; Eine & Zeus.

Both are prolific street artists and innovators in typography and both have pushed the boundaries in a way that has redefined how we see graffiti as an art form.

Eine is best known for his alphabets and letters on shutters and Zeus for his three dimensional images and sculptures based around his writing style.
They come together at Ink_d for ‘Crimes and Punishments’ where their collaboration has produced a heavy hitting alphabet in Pen & Ink.

The show will feature beautifully framed original work on paper combining illustrations of crimes and punishments with Eine’s inimitable fonts and drawings of Eine’s hands by Zeus.
There will also be our usual affordable screen printed show poster and an exclusive low edition print release available during the show.
