The Definitive Imminent Disaster Interview

New York street artist Imminent Disaster recently did an interview with Commandax, and I have to say it’s 10x more detailed and better than 99% of interviews with street artists. Anybody who likes Imminent Disaster should read it, and if you don’t know who she is, you’ll probably like her by the end of the interview.

My favorite little factoid from the interview: Imminent Disaster once played Janet in The Rocky Horror Show.

Aren’t Best Ever are Really Good?

Remember that piece last Halloween by Best Ever? It was on Leake Street, and a picture went around on the street art blogs because everybody loved it? Well, Best Ever (a collaboration between Hadley Newman and Neil Edward) has been doing some more work, and it’s just as impressive as that first piece we saw on Leake Street.

They also started a website for their work recently, which is worth bookmarking.

3 Reasons A Recession Is Good For Street Art

Everybody’s been talking about how the recession is going to destroy every part of our economy, and yeah, it probably will, but it’s not all bad new… street art might actually get a boost in the long run thanks to this economic downturn.

Here are three possible advantages for street art in this recession:

1. The not very talented artists who have found their way into galleries are going to be put in their place.
So many people have been buying street art either for the name of the artist, or just because it is street art. This year, some collectors are concerned that even great artists won’t sell much work. People have stopped buying for name or genre recognition. Collectors are buying those “special pieces” that they feel are particularly great. At the end of this recession, there are going to be a lot fewer crap street artists because their work  is going to stop selling. Nobody wants to buy a piece any more just because the Sotheby’s catalog describes it as “stencil and spray paint on found wood.” Continue reading “3 Reasons A Recession Is Good For Street Art”

Looks like a really good concept for a show. Remi/Rough recently did some collaborations with Grafter which turned out really well, so I’m excited to see how his style works with these other artists.

On a related note, Part2ism has done a new piece outside Urban Angel’s Art Lounge:

Boing Boing Interviews Shepard Fairey

This is probably the best interview I’ve seen with Shepard Fairey about his Obama poster. Boing Boing does a great job. Well worth watching because they discuss the concern I originally had with the image, which I think many people shared: THIS IS SHEPARD FAIREY AKA OBEY DOING A POLITICAL CAMPAIGN IMAGE!

Posterboy Video Interviews

A few new videos with Posterboy have popped up recently. I’ve featured Posterboy on Vandalog before, but for those who don’t know, Posterboy is a New York artist who goes through the subway system ripping up advertising and creating mashups of the ads to change around the message. Recently, he’s also branched out into just ripping billboards down and collaborations with aakash nihalani.

Know Hope ‘The Insecurities of Time’ at Ad Hoc Art

This is one show that I’m pretty excited about, but won’t be seeing in person. Know Hope is one of my favorite up-and-coming artists, and last week saw the opening of his second ever solo show. Ad Hoc Art in New York has Know Hope in their new Project Room space.

The show, “The Insecurities of Time”, features lots of new work from Know Hope, including and installation and some smaller pieces at pretty low prices.

Street Art in Ghent. Where’s Ghent?

Okay so I’ll be first to admit that I’m not the best with geography or world cities, but have you ever heard of Ghent? Apparently it’s quite a bit city in the Flemish half of Belgium. In Belgium, I’ve only ever been to Brussels and Waterloo.

Well, apparently street art fans should have heard of Ghent due to the large amount of street art to be found there. Extremely dedicated street art photographer _Kriebel_ has just posted pages and pages of work from the city, so here’s a couple of highlights. Do check out the rest of his flickr photostream though. Lots of really talented Belgian street artists who don’t get enough credit.
