INFAMY – A Graffiti Film

One thing I’ve noticed through my lack of productivity as of late is that there are a ton of graffiti orientated films and documentaries out there. For the most part many of them are really great to watch and INFAMY is one such bi product of documenting the graffiti scene that really caught my attention. Whilst it may not be all that new to some of you, I was so impressed by the documentary I felt compelled to post something about it here.

INFAMY is an intense journey into the dangerous lives and obsessed minds of six of America’s most prolific graffiti artists. The movie takes you deep into the world of street legends SABER, TOOMER, JASE, CLAW, EARSNOT, and ENEM. With brutal honesty, humor and charisma, these artists reveal why they are so willing to risk everything to spray paint their cities with “tags,” “throwups,” and full-color murals.  From the streets of the South Bronx to the solitude of a San Francisco tunnel, from high atop a Hollywood billboard to North Philadelphia for a lesson in “Philly-style tags,” from the Mexican border to a Cleveland train yard, INFAMY doesn’t analyze or glorify graffiti – it takes you there and brings it to life.

Final Gaia Pieces in Seoul

The premise of this illegal street project was to extend my investigation of traditional folklore and religion in the United States to the city of Seoul. Utilizing Korea’s rich history and extensive mythology, a piece exploring the various conflicts that have defined this contentious nation was installed in each quadrant of the city. The application of each piece is structured according to the principles of Ohaeng, the five directions of the universe, thus the implementation is therein physically defined by the direction of Korean Mysticism. To see the whole project check out this set on flickr.

New Wall By JAES,ASKEW,ENUE & Tatiana Suarez

ENUE x TATIANA SUAREZ x ASKEW x JAES from Askew One on Vimeo.

NY based graffiti artist Jaes recently invited a handful of his friends to paint a schoolyard in Manhattan. Askew, Enue, Miami born/Brooklyn based artist Tatiana Suarez, and Jaes wrapped up this intricate wall with a video to go along with it. Jaes, Askew, and Enue’s crisp lettering is complimented by Tatiana’s softer figurative imagery for a final piece that came to life from more than your average painting session.

First Piece in Korea

Tiger Rabbit in Hongdae, Seoul from Gaia Uroboros on Vimeo.

Gaia in Korea: the first of five pieces for each quadrant of the city. The hybrid of the Tiger and Rabbit signifies the annual transition in the Korean calendar. Furthermore, these archetypal symbols of aggression and submission address the hierarchy of japanese colonization and contemporary korean identity. Situated in Hongdae, the center of Seoul’s fashion and nightlife, the neighborhood is the confluence of traditional korean culture and American influence.

Blu “Big Bang Big Boom”

It is 2 am and just before I go to bed, I find this new time lapse video of Blu’s work in my e-mail. So of course I have to now share it, so you while I sleep in until 1 pm, all of you lovely Europeans (and Americans who are not hungover) can enjoy it in the morning. Based on Blu’s take of the evolution of life and where it is going from here, this following video rivals even that of previous work, like his incredible collaboration with Dave Ellis. Enjoy!
