Bast Pokes Fun at Hipsters (Because No one else does…)

For Bast‘s latest print release with The Outsiders at Lazarides the artist has chosen to target the butt of recent jokes in London- Dalston. Home to the many hipster knobheads that run around claiming benefits and puking on doorsteps, the print entitled Dalston Unitooth looks at a fictitious world where the hipsters of Europe and the USA come together. One of the same breed, the print is amusing if you get it, but aesthetically is an explosion of color gone awry and a paint by numbers theme that is touched upon and lost immediately. Eh, at least it is a bit different. Can’t knock something for being a bit different. I’ll take a change of pace rather the same old stuff nowadays.

The print is available from today at The Outsiders or online and is a print in 21 colors as an edition of 10 for £500.

New prints from Labrona

Bowed (yellow)

Labrona has been busy lately working on seven new screenprints. They are all available online now. As a fan of ridiculously affordable prints, my favorites have to be Bowed and Crossed, which each come in a red colorway and a blue colorway and are part of Brooklynite Gallery‘s Snub Nose series. That means, that not only are that beautiful, but they are super-affordable. Each of the Bowed and Crossed prints are a 6×8 inch edition of 30 available for just $25. These prints are available online here, here, here and here.

Back home in Canada, Labrona has his Zombie Stance and Dog Man Rides Again prints at station16. Zombie Stance is 22×22 inches and an edition of 15. Dog Man Rides Again is 22×30 inches, an edition of 13 and available in both a yellow/blue and green/pink colorway. Zombie Stance and Dog Man Rides Again are each available online here for 100 Canadian dollars.

The latest Judith Supine print

Last week, Paper Monster released the latest print from Judith Supine. It’s called “Give Up The Ghost And Put On Flesh” and like the other new piece we found from him recently, it seems that Judith Supine has been limiting the use of his formally trademark green tint. Each print in the “Give Up The Ghost…” series is unique. They are relief prints that have been individually handpainted with acrylic and watercolors. The series is an edition of 50 and they are available online for $625 each.

Banksy news update

We’ve got a few bits of Banksy-related news to share, so it’s all being lumped together here:

  • It looks like there will be a new Banksy print this Christmas March 2012 from Pictures on Walls (no surprise). The print will be based on this gorilla image, which was recently buffed accidentally. Even Pictures on Walls’ description of the print in a bit tongue-in-cheek about the recycling of this older image into a print with different glittery color options.
  • A number of people have emailed me after seeing this Banksy installation (photo by Just) at Pictures on Walls’ winter group show (which Just has plenty more photos of) because it looks a bit like this sculpture by Giles Walker and Peter Dunne from a couple of years ago. Personally, I prefer Dunne and Walker’s piece, but I don’t think the pieces are too similar for comfort. Could Banksy have seem the work by Dunne and Walker and been inspired partially by that? Definitely. But it’s not just an outright copy, and I’m often hesitant to say that any Banksy idea has been outright stolen from another artist, since most of his ideas rely on pretty simple themes and symbols, so it’s likely that others have tried similar things before whether Banksy knew about it or not.
  • It now seems unlikely that we will ever get confirmation from Banksy’s website that the piece pictured at the top of this post and covered on Vandalog last month is a Banksy. Foreignstudents.com happened to catch some photos of the work being put up. No faces of the artist or his crew, but the site did get images of a scaffolding being put up that covered the work while it was being done, and they say a man posing as a security guard stayed at the scaffolding for some of the time that it was up. So if this wasn’t Banksy’s work, someone may still come forward claiming responsibility. I’m confident however that this was the work of Banksy, so given these photos and any more that might be out there, taking responsibility seems risky for his anonymity.

Tubu community project

The Tubú community is an indigenous group of families now living in the city of Bogotá, Columbia. Tubu Community is a project to help raise money to build a new home in Bogotá for a Tubú family. To learn more about the Tubú people, you can watch this video or read this info.

A new print from Stinkfish

At their webstore, Tubu Community has begun to sell prints and original art by South American and European artists to help with the effort. 100% of the proceeds from these sales go to the Tubú people. Blu, Bastardilla, Buytronick and Stinkfish have contributed original art and Eine and Stinfish have contributed prints, including a new 7-color screenprint by Stinkfish. Expect more products to be added to the webstore in the future.

Troy Lovegates needs to get to NYC

Troy Lovegates aka Other is trying to get to New York City this fall for his first solo show there. In order to make it, he needs to raise some money, so he’s put a couple of really great pieces for sale on his flickr page. The only painting in the sale has already sold, but there are still some prints available.

This 2-color lino-block print, edition of 18 and a size of 23 x 32 cm, is available for $120 Canadian dollars:

Unfortunately but not surprisingly, these beautiful drawings, which were just $20 Canadian dollars, have already sold out (click the image to view it large)…

New prints by Escif and San

San and Escif have each just release two prints through Upperplayground to coincide with their show at Fifty24SF. I know it’s not the most complex artwork every made, but I can’t help but laugh my ass off when I look at Escif’s Macarena print. Well done. You can view/buy the two San prints here and here, and the Escif prints here and here. They are all screenprints, editions of 50, 18 x 24 inches and priced at $175.
