Keith Haring x Obey Collaboration Preview

Since I heard about the Keith Haring x OBEY collaboration, I have been waiting to see the end result. Thankfully, this Autumn I won’t be sporting OBEY’s usual snap back but an array of worn in tees and hoodies emblazoned with some of Haring’s most iconic images. The line will even boast a leather varsity jacket and a military m65 style that resembles the coat that Haring used to wear while painting in the 80’s.

For Shepard Fairey, this partnership between OBEY and the Keith haring Foundation is his way of paying homage to an artist, businessman and ground breaking street artist. The line blatantly points out the likeness between the artists in their subject matters and foray into commercial projects, allowing the mainstream to own their artwork in another form than just paintings. Most importantly, however, is that OBEY is bringing Haring’s art work to a new audience just over 20 years since his passing. This is what Shepard had to say about the collection and inspiration behind it:

“Though Keith Haring died only two years after I started making street art, his art and practice had already made a profound impact on me. At art college and on the streets of NYC in the late 80’s and early 90’s, Keith’s radiant baby and other images could be seen on the tees of all the flyest hipsters. Keith Haring was a prolific artist with a distinct style of drawing and painting that was simultaneously refined, but primitive, deliberate but lyrical and energetic. Haring believed “the public has a right to art” and this philosophy informed his populist approach to spreading his art and messages. He pursued his art with a deeply personal vision, but also as a champion of social justice and a belief in the interconnectedness of humanity. Haring demonstrated the power of art on the streets, but he also put his art on t-shirts and record covers. He even opened a retail space in NYC called The Pop Shop. Eventually Haring’s artwork became widely respected, displayed, and sold as “fine art”. Haring rose from the 80’s NYC graffiti scene to not only affect the art world, but to dramatically impact pop culture. Inspired by Keith Haring’s achievements, I pursued my art career with the optimism that my goals could be attained.”

Brandalism: Mass-takeover of British billboards

Brandalism is a large-scale billboard hijacking project up right now throughout England. The organizers have put artwork over ads in Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and London over the past few days, and they’ve worked with dozens of artists from 8 countries to do it. So far, about 35 billboards have been taken over and replaced with art, but there may be as many as 50 when the project is finished. The project calls itself the “the world’s first international, collaborative subvertising project,” which is not true, but it is still very exciting and a high-impact way to show what could be in our public spaces instead of advertising. Some fantastic artists have contributed to the project including Jordan Seiler, OX, Ron English, Cleon Peterson, Paul Insect and Know Hope.

Logan Hicks show this month at The Outsiders

Stencil master, urban adventurer and photographer Logan Hicks is going to be showing at Lazarides‘ Greek Street space The Outsiders London later this month for a solo show. Structural Integrity includes new body of stencil work from Logan as well as a rare opportunity to see his photographs in a gallery setting. Logan has been working his ass off making this new work, so it should be quite something. The show runs from July 20th through August 25th.

In addition to being one of my favorite stencil artists and maybe the hardest working guy I know, Logan is one of my favorite people. I’m excited that Logan will be showing at The Outsiders, but I’m equally disappointed that I won’t be able to see the show in person. The Painted Desert Project – round 1, post 1

Last month, Gaia, Overunder, Doodles, Labrona, Jetsonorama, Tom Greyeyes and Breeze participated in the first iteration of The Painted Desert Project, a project developed by Yote and Jetsonorama and which took place in the Navajo Nation in northern Arizona.

Of the project, Jetsonorama says:

We hoped to connect artists with vendors working along the roadside in homemade structures where food and jewelery are sold. We attempted to familiarize artists with the culture before they started painting. Because of the location of this project where large walls are few, the emphasis was on establishing a connection with the community. Both Tom Greyeyes and Breeze are Native American and came to the project already sensitized. We’d hoped to get more local youth involved in working with the artists but will have to pursue this with future iterations of the project.

As much as I enjoy the mural projects going on around the world right now, things like The Painted Desert Project are fantastic low-key but potentially impactful counterpoints to the hype and huge walls that seem to accompany more urban festivals.

10 freights by Baer

Recently I’ve been spending a bit of time looking at freight graffiti. I’m no expert in graffiti, but Baer‘s work immediately stood out. His style is beyond “graffiti beyond letters,” and is more like something ripped from a pages of a graphic novel. But that doesn’t mean he has thrown letters away, just that they are sometimes a bit more hidden. Wild style that changes letters into other graphics rather than abstraction. Sort of like Horfe or Lush. Clearly, Baer isn’t the only guy to paint this way, but damn is he good. The folks at Juxtapoz are fans too.

Ron English in 40 words or less

Ron English is a father, a husband, a full time artist, a part time vandal and 24/7 American. When he says that he’s been busy in London, he means it. In addition to his work at the London Pleasure Gardens, Ron is in town for a show. Letters From America opens in London today, July 4th (America’s Independence Day), at Corey Helford Gallery in conjunction with Black Rat Projects, and features Ron’s work with the work of other American artists: TrustoCorpRisk and Saber. With a numerous ongoing projects in London, a family to take care of, and a street reputation to maintain, Ron has no time to waste and of course, neither do you. So here is Ron getting straight to the point of questions that I thought about for a long time.

Caroline: Letters From America includes four talented American artists, two with backgrounds in street art and two with backgrounds in graffiti. Do you feel that the distinction between street art and graffiti is an important one once the art is put in a gallery setting?

Ron: Once it’s in the gallery it is no longer street art or graffiti, it’s just plain old art.

Caroline: You seem to have made an effort to include your children in numerous aspects of your art career; from being the subjects of some of your paintings, to being given stickers to put up around Detroit, to your son Mars having a painting included in the South Park-themed art show you curated. How do you believe they feel about your work and growing up in the fine art/street art world?

Ron: They are mostly bored by it and a little puzzled by people who have tattoos of them on their bodies.

Caroline: Besides the fact of the London Pleasure Gardens being just a short distance from the 2012 Olympic events, do you have any plans for more work relating to the Olympics this year?

Ron: No.

Caroline: When you were a kid, did you find Frosty Flakes and McDonald’s delicious?

Ron: Yes, I also like the toys.

Caroline: Did you enjoy Disney cartoons?

Ron: Still do.

Caroline: To what extent were the subjects you use in your art now apart of your childhood and when did you become aware of those icons on a critical level?

Ron: When I was six I made a painting of Charlie Brown and another kid said I was in big trouble for stealing a copyrighted character.

Caroline: What was it like painting the nose cone of a jumbo jet for the London Pleasure Gardens? Did that present any challenges?

Ron: It was pretty easy. The only challenge was the alleged Bansky on the other side, I was asked to paint it over but I was uncomfortable doing that. The problem was solved by some midnight whitewasher.

Caroline: Why continue to illegally put up work and risk arrest when you don’t need to, from a career standpoint and particularly since you have a family?

Ron: Getting permission is such a hassle.

Caroline: Do you find a difference in how your work is received in England compared with the U.S.?

Ron: They actually have street art tours here.

Caroline: Have you run into any legal issues with copyright infringement?

Ron: No, my work is parody, not infringement.

Caroline: Have you ever been on the other end of an infringement situation, where people were stealing or appropriating your work?

Ron: Probably.

Caroline: Living in Beacon, New York seems an unexpected choice for a street artist. Why do you choose to live there rather than a city?

Ron: My kids like it there, plus fewer billboards means less temptation.

Caroline: Any plans in the works for future projects that you can talk about?

Ron: I just released a new record with The Electric Illuminati called Songs in English. It’s on iTunes.

Preview/studio visit: Lush’s London warehouse show

Lush is just about to sell out all over again with a massive warehouse show in London. This will be Lush’s first solo show in Europe. You Become What You Hate opens on July 5th at 6pm at a location near Hackney Wick Station. And you may want to think about showing up early because the first 25 people to arrive will each be given a special gift. You can register at Lush’s website to get a message when the exact location is announced.

John Fekner and Don Leicht at Welling Court

We’ve got more today from Ad Hoc Art’s Welling Court Mural Project. John Fekner and Don Leicht (studio visit) are two of my favorite stencil artists, and two of street art history’s most underrated pioneers. John sent over these photos of their contributions to this year’s Welling Court Mural Project, which included new works and additions to their piece from two years ago. About the additions, Fekner says, “We were prepped to do a new wall ¢hange$, but decided to update the wall as a tribute to graffiti artist Comp, Michael Wolovich (1989-2012) who painted the original wall with us in 2010.”

Here’s what Fekner has to say about this piece:

The stencil project, He Was Simply A Guy Who Painted Messages In The Street is intended to function on two levels.

Most every artist will do a self-portrait at some point in his or her career. Mine is not a traditional portrait; it is a self-portrait with words.

Every individual is unique in the world and has something to contribute no matter how small the thought or message might be. Perhaps a work on the street may provide a laugh or help someone get through a difficult moment, an anxious night, a period of strife or uncertainty in their life. Yes, some people may not like it; but art on the street is for everyone. It may be funny, soothing, insightful, joyous or reflective. It is an instant of communication intent on causing an immediate reaction on the viewer.

The project is also a tribute to every unknown individual whoever grafftied, scrawled, scratched, wheat-pasted, stenciled or spray painted without the public ever knowing the name of the anonymous person.

An artist’s knowledge is their trade. Artists are here to visually express and share universal concepts of peace, love, hope, compassion, equality and understanding with the general public. Art in unexpected places: anywhere, anytime, anyplace and everyone.
