Dover.D: from Tel Aviv to NYC

Back in 2007, Dover.D‘s stencils of gas-masked characters in a range of poses began to surface in Tel Aviv. While most of the street art back then was confined to South Tel Aviv’s industrial district, Dover.D’s’s work often landed in the center of town.

Within the next two years, he became identified with a range of urban interventions, and his street art images became increasingly diverse.

Here in New York City, he recently completed a window installation for the Center for Jewish History on W. 16th Street.

“Disambiguation” with Carlos Mare, Rae Martini, Remi/Rough & Sixeart at Carmichael Gallery

Carmichael Gallery is once again featuring artwork by some of my favorite artists. Opening Saturday evening is Disambiguation with new works that reinvent traditional graffiti forms by Carlos Mare, Rae Martini, Remi/Rough and Sixeart. The exhibit continues through October 6 at 5797 Washington Blvd in Culver City, CA.

Zero Cents‘ distinctly disfigured – often disturbing — characters have been part of Israel’s visual landscape for years. It was quite a thrill to see his work this past week in Bushwick, Brooklyn.

Made in Iran: Icy and Sot in NYC

Icy and Sot have been doing lots of fresh pieces on NYC streets, so we were excited to check out Made in Iran, the first exhibit outside of their native country that they could attend. With influences ranging from Banksy to C215, they have created a distinct body of work including many pieces that reflect their unique political and social realities.

A particular favorite in the exhibit is an installation of old 12-inch vinyls that pay homage to deceased icons. We loved how the cuts in the vinyl mirror the hair of those portrayed.

Also impressive are a number of finely detailed stencils, including this one on an old Iranian packing box.

The exhibit continues through the 25th at 379 Broome Street in Manhattan’s Little Italy.

Détournement: Signs of the Times @ Jonathan LeVine has it all

One of the many aspects of street art that I love is its amazing power to engage and challenge the public.  This is particularly evident in Jonathan LeVine’s current exhibit, Détournement: Signs of the Times. Curated by the noted critic Carlo McCormick, its works are provocative, often confrontational and visually appealing in their fusion of text and image. (And also impressive is how well they work together in this gallery setting). Here are a few more images:

Sonni fashions huge boom box on Bowery construction container

Sonni’s distinct aesthetic, marked by bold colors and geometric shapes, has found a second home in the East Village. With his Music Machine on view at Artist Alley @ Extra Place, a huge boom box can now be seen a few blocks north at the Bowery and East 4th Street. Curated once again by Keith Schweitzer, the director of  FABnyc‘s public art program, Sonni’s recent work celebrates the 16th anniversary of New York City’s International Fringe Festival. “Cause and Effect” Captures the Beat of the Streets

For sheer fun, few exhibits I’ve seen this summer surpass “Cause and Effect” at 211 Franklin Street in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Curated by UR New York (2ESAE & SKI) and Tone MST, it features works in various genres by a range of artists whose works are seen on NYC streets. Graffiti and street art meet here and fuse seamlessly – sometimes within the same pieces. Here are a few more images:

You & Me at Bushwick’s Low Brow Artique

Opening this evening from 6-9pm at Bushwick’s stylish Low Brow Artique is You and Me, an intriguing exhibit of collaborative pieces in a range of textures and styles. Curated by Rhiannon Platt, it features works by Cash4 & Smells, OCMC & This Is Awkward, Veng & Sofia Maldonado, Chris & Veng (RWK), EKG & Dark Clouds, Matt Siren & Fenix and Royce Bannon & Russell King, The exhibit continues through September 1 at 143 Central Avenue.  Here are two more pieces:
