Earlier this month, Hush and OneThirty3 Projects held an installation at Hush’s OneThirty3  space in Newcastle, UK. The show featured a new installation by Hush and the works of photographers and film makers documenting previous installations in the space by artists such as Titifreak, Paul Insect, Sickboy, Herakut and Gaia.

Sam3 in France

This week it seems like I’ve been appearing elsewhere on the web as much as here on the blog. I’ve been more active than usual on Vandalog’s tumblr, which I’ve finally getting a feel for; I was interviewed by Brian Sherwin over at FineArtViews; and I wrote a post for my friend at Hyperallergic about advertisers utilizing the style of Liu Bolin to sell stuff. Here’s what didn’t make it to Vandalog:

Playing Field group show at Carmichael Gallery

Posted: June 14th, 2011 | Author: | Category: Gallery/Museum Shows | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , , , , , | 1 Comment »

Carmichael Gallery‘s next show is Playing Field, a group show of secondary market works. It opens this Saturday, June 18th and runs through August 9th. The line up hits most of the big names you’d expect to see as well as a few surprises: Banksy, Faile, Shepard Fairey, Sixeart, Os Gêmeos, Mark Jenkins, JR, KAWS, Barry McGee, José Parlá, Judith Supine, Swoon, Titi Freak, Dan Witz.

These sort of shows tend to be either really good or really bad. I’m liking the above piece by Barry McGee, so I’m thinking this should fall on the really good side of things. But LA residents can see for themselves starting on Saturday. The opening is from 6-9pm.

New Titifreak prints

For Titifreak’s upcoming show in Newcastle at One Thirty 3, he’s got two prints coming out (well, one image in two colorways). I think they look pretty great. For me, Titifreak tends to do things either very right or the work misses the mark completely. In this case, I think he’s gotten it very right once again. Each of these prints is an edition of 33 plus two APs and costs £250 each. Most of these will be released at the gallery on February 24th when the show opens, but 11 from each edition will be available for sale before then through an online lottery system. To enter, just email info@onethirty3.com.

One night only: TitiFreak installation in Newcastle

Posted: February 1st, 2011 | Author: | Category: Gallery/Museum Shows | Tags: , | No Comments »

TitiFreak will be at One Thirty 3, a new space in Newcastle, this month for a one-night-only installation. One Thirty 3 has a ballsy setup: shows run for one night only, the artist does an installation, there’s only one original artwork for sale and one print (in an edition of 33). TitiFreak’s show be open on February 24th from 6:30-9:30pm. If you plan to check out TitiFreak’s show, One Thirty 3′s website recommends emailing info@onethirty3.com to get your name on the list. Should be cool.

Later this year, One Thirty 3 will have shows with Sickboy, Word To Mother, Gaia, Retna and Herakut.

Street Sketchbook: Journeys launch show

Last week in London was crazy-busy, but I’m glad I took a few minutes to get over to Pictures on Walls for the launch show of Tristan Manco’s new book Street Sketchbook: Journeys. To be honest, I haven’t read the book yet. I still have a few pages left in Street/Studio and then I’ve still got 2-3 other books in the queue before this one, but the show was good fun. There’s work from Roa, Ripo, Saner, Dran, Titifreak and a bunch of other talented artists, many of whose names I don’t remember. That’s the great thing about Tristan: he knows all these talented artists that most street art fans have never heard of, and this is a good showcase of those artists. But here are my favorite pieces from the show:

Titifreak

Sam3

Sam3 actually has a new print at Paper Monster, but I think this wood block is 10x cooler.

Unfortunately, this show has closed already, but you can find some more pictures on my flickr.

Huge new(ish) mural in Vancouver

This mural by Titifreak, Peeta, Indigo and Faith47 was painted last month in Vancouver. I love how it turned out, especially Titifreak’s bit. The wall was painted for a certain event there, but since I have nothing good to say about the manipulative group that organized the mural, I’m not going to give them publicity by linking them up or naming the event. The art looks good though.

‘Paint Your Faith’ project, Canada

Posted: April 14th, 2010 | Author: | Category: Gallery/Museum Shows | Tags: , , | 4 Comments »

A crew of Christian (CORRECTION: not all artists involved are Christian. The event is a nondenominational exploration of spirituality and faith, but it happens to be sponsored in part by a church) graffiti artists are set to start work on a 130-foot long mural in Vancouver.

Paint Your Faith is a collaboration wall between Faith47 (South Africa), Peeta (Italy), Titifreak (Brazil) and Indigo (Canada).

“For seven days, these artists will take a blank wall and turn it into their own personal canvas, creating a piece of art that will change the Vancouver landscape and open discourse for what faith, spirituality and art is really about.”

While, for a lot of readers, organised religion combined with street art surely brings forth apparitions of ‘happy clappy’ crappy aerosol art and hymns blasting out on the boombox, the artists involved with this project – planned over six months (albeit by the Wondercafe.ca and the First United Church of Vancouver) – are all highly experienced.

Open your minds to the religious propaganda just a little  and quit cringing at statements such as the crew wanting to, “express their unique and unified interpretation of faith”  and you might be led to think this project quite special.

I would recommend watching the interviews with the artists about their interpretations of faith on the PYF website.

The Paint Your Faith project will also include a group show at Ayden Gallery (opening April 24), featuring Chor Boogie, Mediah, Elicser and Siloette as well as Dedos, Kaput, Misk, Scott Sueme and Phresha.

The mural project starts April 21 and takes place at:

55-57 W. Hastings Street (across from the Woodwards Building)

Lots of amazing pieces have been hitting the streets of one of my favorite countries recently by some of my favorite artists. Check out these pics of work by Zezão (above), osgêmeos, Titi Freak and Emol.

Can’t wait to see this finished!

Loving Titi Freak’s evolving style – he’s pushing himself in a good direction.

Emol’s new work is awesome, so I’m posting two photos for him.

Thanks to Zezão, Titi, Emol and @felix001 for the images.
