ÑEWMERICA: Birth of a Nation at Exit Room NY with LNY, Icy & Sot, ND’A, Mata Ruda and Sonni

Somewhat reminiscent of RAE’s remarkable recreation of an East Village bodega, Exit Room NY’s current exhibit, ÑEWMERICA: Birth of a Nation, focuses on the endangered bodega. In addition to a impressive installation recreating a bodega that is about to give way to a Bank of America, the exhibit features dozens of artworks by the members of the newly launched collective, ÑEWMERICA. Here’s a sampling:

Track 1 at Bushwick’s Exit Room with Sonni, Marka 27, Chris RWK, Esteban del Valle and more

Exit Room, a wonderful new cultural space in Bushwick Brooklyn, is currently featuring Track 1, a collection of artworks painted directly on its walls, along with canvases, prints and zines by the participating artists. Conceived and curated by Dariel MTZ with Zoe, the exhibit continues through Friday.

“The Talking Walls of Buenos Aires” a show in DC of some of Argentina’s leading street artists

Latin America seems like a treasure trove of street art and graffiti. I could spend hours on end looking through these works through groups on Flickr. But for people like me who can’t see it in person, that seems to be the only way to tap into that vibrant and energetic scene. In the last 2 years, I’ve come to know and love a few Argentinian street artists (a few of whom will be featured in this show) but I’m aware that there are so many others who I have yet to come across!

The Talking Walls of Buenos Aires is a group show curated by Graffitimundo, which is based around just that – bringing works by a few of Argentina’s leading street artists to a gallery in Washington DC. Opening July 13th at 6pm at The Fridge gallery, you can catch the work of Buenos Aires Stencil, Cabaio Stencil, Chu, Defi, Ever, Fede Minuchin, Gualicho, Jaz, Malatesta, Mart, Pastel, Pedro Perelman, Poeta, Prensa La Libertad, Pum Pum, Roma, Stencil Land, Sonni, Tec and Tester.

A Sonni video

Sonni is an artist from Argentina who is probably best-known in the rest of the world for the boom box piece he painted in Miami a couple of years back for Primary Flight, shown above. For some more insight into this artist who is painting some of the cutest and most fun murals around, check out this video:

Sonni fashions huge boom box on Bowery construction container

Sonni’s distinct aesthetic, marked by bold colors and geometric shapes, has found a second home in the East Village. With his Music Machine on view at Artist Alley @ Extra Place, a huge boom box can now be seen a few blocks north at the Bowery and East 4th Street. Curated once again by Keith Schweitzer, the director of  FABnyc‘s public art program, Sonni’s recent work celebrates the 16th anniversary of New York City’s International Fringe Festival. Here are a few more images of the completed piece:

LNY in Baltimore
