We get emailed the latest-and-greatest of many different street artists, but it is unusual to get sent photographs of old and worn down pieces unless they are historically significant. Miss Kaliansky may not have a website, but what she does have is an eye for beauty. She sent us these photos taken in Barcelona in January 2013, saying “Nothing new, but beautiful…”

This weekend I’ve been without solid internet access, and Caroline and I have both been knee-deep in exams and final essays for the last week, so here’s a belated link-o-rama…

• The New York Times has a story on Living Walls, centering on the removal of Hyuro’s mural a few months ago and now the removal of Roti’s mural. I hope that this does not dissuade artists or the amazing people behind Living Walls from doing more of the amazing work that they have become known for over the last three and a half years.
• Beau Stanton has a new print at 1xRUN. Just a few hours left on it though.
• And then there’s this Kid Acne print that’s perfect for Christmas.
• Jeff Soto now has his work on t-shirts. Very cool, and at an affordable price.
• Henry Chalfant has a new ebook out in the Apple iBook store with high-res photos of subway cars. I haven’t had a chance to check it out yet, but it sounds great. The NYTimes has a bit of a preview and the story behind the photos (in case you don’t already kn0w).
• Don’t Fret is always good for a smile or two.
• Remember that Aakash Nihalani piece from last week? Well here’s something similar from Elfo from a couple of years ago.
• On a similar note with that great video of Just that Caroline posted this week, it’s worth remembering KATSU’s instructable from 2007.
• Ripo can paint quite a mural, but sometimes simple is best.
• LNY is back from his trip to Korea, but he left some beautiful work there.
• It’s certainly interesting to see Shamsia Hassani from Afghanistan and El Mac collaborate.

Ripo painted this piece, Surreal But So Real, for this year’s Avant-Garde Urbano Festival in Tudela de Navarra, Spain. Besides the obvious (Steve Powers), Ripo is probably my favorite artist juggling signpainting, muralism and graffiti. I think the great thing about this wall, like many of Ripo’s walls, is that you can look at it from a variety of distances and angles and it should still be interesting. From straight on and a distance, there’s text to read or you can just look at it for its aesthetic value and ignore the text. From an angle, at least the colors brighten up an otherwise blank walls. From close up, there are details to catch.

There are a bunch of shows open now or opening in the next month that I’d like to mention, but there are only so many hours in the day. So here’s a bit of a round-up:

• Détournement: Signs of the Times is a group show that just opened at Jonathan Levine Gallery in NYC. It was curated by the legendary Carlo McCormick and features artists who “subvert consensus visual language so as to turn the expressions of capitalist culture against themselves.” Some of those artists in Détournement are Aiko, David Wojnarowicz, Ripo, Posterboy, Ron English, Shepard Fairey + Jamie Reid, Steve Powers, TrustoCorp and Zevs.
• Chris Stain and Joe Iurato are showing together for a two-man show at NYC’s Mighty Tanaka. The show opens on Friday. These are two great and underrated stencil artists. I highly recommend checking out this show, particularly given the superb quality of Stain’s recent indoor work.
• Sweet Toof has a solo show opening this week at High Roller Society a pop-up space in Hackney Wick, London.
• Contemporary Wing’s (Washington, DC) latest group show, opening on the 16th, is an exhibit of secondary market work, but there should some nice stuff, including work by Shepard Fairey, WK Interact, Gaia, Faile and Blek le Rat. I must admit that I’ve included a piece in this show, but I’m not going to say which one (so if you want to help me out, just buy the entire show…).
• Finally, Dabs and Myla have curated a show at LA’s Thinkspace Gallery which will open September 1st. In addition to their own paintings and installations, the show features 32 of their friends, plus a solo show in Thinkspace’s project room by Surge MDR. Those shows open September 1st.

Vintage typography with a sarcastic edge is perhaps the best way to describe Max ‘Ripo’ Rippon‘s art. Stylish and elaborately drawn, single words or short phrases seek to maximise the aesthetics of both the letters and the textured surfaces onto which they are drawn. Quirky and highly interesting, Ripo has become one of my favourite artists around at the moment.

Now based in Barcelona, Ripo returns to his country of birth for a solo show, ‘Signs, Fines, & Cheap Wines‘, at White Walls Gallery in San Francisco. Judging by these preview shots, this show is going to be fantastic and well worth viewing in person. The opening party is on Thursday 9th August and remains open until 1st September.

It’s a mega link-o-rama this week because I’ve been traveling from last Saturday until Thursday morning.

• Here’s a video of Morley’s show at Lazarides Newcastle. When I first saw Morley’s work about a year and a half ago, I thought it was hilarious and touching. Now though, while I appreciate that he has tried to literally make his gallery work 3D and therefore a bit different from what he does on the street, I’m kinda bored of it. Anybody else feeling this way?
• Zeus (the British one) has a pop-up show in London next month.
• Pez has some great commentary on the transition from the street to the gallery.
• Emol, Stinkfish, Zio Ziegler will be showing together at Carmichael Gallery starting August 11th.
• Okay, here’s one of the very occasional Olek pieces that I really like, but she got to start with a great shape so I’m not sure how much the yarn helped.
• Evol hit up some electrical boxes in Warsaw.
• A unicorn expelling rainbows from its mouth and ass.
• Some very odd but also oddly beautiful graffiti from Homer.
• Even Russia has a mural festival. Of course, the work is pretty tame. Nothing like this piece of Russian street art.
• There’s some great work to be spotted along the High Line.
• Pixote recently had a show in NYC. Nothing amazing, but it’s interesting to see what Pixote does besides rollers.
• This mural in Denver by Shepard Fairey is pretty nice. He’s in town for his part in a show at The Black Book Gallery.
• Reka’s in London.
• Ripo has a solo show opening next Thursday at White Walls Gallery in San Fransisco.

UPDATE – LOCATION CHANGE: The Underbelly Show has moved to 78 NW 25th Street in Wynwood, Miami to accommodate the large scale of the artwork in this show.

The Underbelly Project is back. Last year, I posted a lot about the project where 103 artists from around the world secretly painted an abandoned/half-completed New York City subway station. After that initial burst of press here and around the web, The Underbelly Project organizers stayed silent. With only occasional vague tweets from a mysterious twitter account and the appearance on Amazon of an upcoming book about the project. Yesterday though, The Underbelly Project announced that they will be participating in this year’s Basel Miami Week madness with a pop-up gallery in South Beach Wynwood.

The organizers of The Underbelly Project and The Underbelly Show, Workhorse and PAC, have this to say about the show:

Workhorse: The New York Underbelly was an important chapter for us, but the story hadn’t been comprehensively told. The Underbelly Miami show gives us a chance to present the broad scope of documentation – Videos, photos, time-lapses and first hand accounts. The project is about more than just artwork. This show gives us a chance to show the people and the environment behind the artwork.

PAC: While the experience each artist had in their expedition underground can never be captured, it is my hope that this show will highlight some of the trials and tribulations associated with urban art taking place in the remote corners of our cities. Too often the practice of making art in unconventional venues remains shrouded in mystery and I hope this exhibition will shine a faint light on those artists who risk their safety to find alternative ways to create and be a part of the cities they live in.

35 of the 103 artists from The Underbelly Project will be exhibiting art in The Underbelly Show, plus video and still footage of the artists at work in the tunnel. For this show, the space will be transformed into an environment imitating the tunnel where The Underbelly Project took place, right down to playing sounds recorded in the station while The Underbelly Project was happening.

If you absolutely cannot wait until February to get We Own The Night, the book documenting The Underbelly Project, a limited number will be available at The Underbelly Show in a box set with 9 photographic prints and the book all contained in a handcrafted oak box. Additionally, you will be able to your book signed by the artists participating in The Underbelly Show.

The Underbelly Show will take place at 2200 Collins Avenue, South Beach, Miami 78 NW 25th Street, Wynwood, Miami. There will be a private opening on November 30th, and the space will be open to the general public December 2nd-5th, with a general opening on the 2nd from 8-10pm.

On Every Street is a show opening this Thursday at Samuel Owen Gallery in Greenwich, CT. Curated by Michael de Feo, it features the work of dozens of street artists. On Every Street includes a diverse of street artists both in style and (from Hargo to Tony Curanaj) and when they were active outdoors (from Richard Hambleton to Gaia).

Stolenspace Gallery‘s summer group show opens next week, on July 7th. All the work in this show, prints and originals, will be new. The artist lineup includes D*face, Dan Witz, Eine, Miss Van, Ripo, San, Shepard Fairey, Word To Mother and a number of others. Check out the full artist list on Stolenspace’s website. The show runs from the 7th of July (opening from 6-9pm) through July 31st.
