Doodles, Swampy and Greg Mike at Living Walls 2010

Later this month, Atlanta is going to be taken over by street artists from around the world for this year’s edition of the Living Walls conference, Living Walls: the City Speaks. From the 12th-14th of August, there will be film screenings, lectures and artists painting murals around the city. Living Walls have brought together an impressive artist roster from around the world including (but not limited to) Doodles, Swampy, Gaia, Roa, Labrona, OverUnder, Sam3, Freddy Sam, White Cocoa, Nanook, Greg Mike, Paper Twins, Clownsoldier and Gawd. And I can’t complain about the keynote speakers either: Tristan Manco, Gaia, Ricky Lee Gordon and me.

So if you’re in Atlanta, come out check out the opening party at The Sound Table on Friday the 12th, lectures at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Georgia on the 13th during the day, a party at The Goat Farm the night of the 13th and a tour of all the new murals on the 14th. I’ll post more details about exact times later. And of course, I’ll be posting plenty of photos from the conference as well.

In September, another Living Walls event will take place in Albany, NY. More on that later.

Last night might have been my busiest 1st Thursday ever, and I didn’t even stop off everywhere I wanted to. Either way, I’ll have to go back to a few galleries this week to actually look at the art properly. Even with a cursory glance though, the Charming Baker show was the highlight by a mile. I’m not sure how sustainable it is to sell paintings at the prices they sold for last night, but damn it looked good. Here’s a few things I could have posted about last night, had I not been out being a gallery-hopping scenester…

• Probably the coolest thing I’ve seen all week: Nug (this guy) visited FAME Festival.
• Everfresh have created the graffiti writer’s dream machine: The Graff Mobile.
• Conor Harrington has been painting some murals of bulls in Ireland. I like this one. This one, not so much. Unfortunately, I cannot figure out why that is about either of the walls.
• In addition to his LA show, Lush is doing a show in August at Fifty24SF.
• As usual, Dal does something visually stunning.
• Leon Reid IV is doing a Kickstarter campaign for his latest potential public sculpture in New York City.
• Meighan O’Toole at My Love for You has done a podcast where she interviewed up with Steve Powers, the first in what will hopefully be a series of podcasts from her.
• A new print from Shepard Fairey is being released, partially for charity, in New York this weekend.
• Showpaper has done round 2 of its Community Serviced project where they get artists to paint newspaper bin boxes for Showpaper. Check out all the photos from round 2 here.

A few days ago Couture Gallery in Stockholm opened their latest show Strange Fables. The exhibit features new works by the likes of Herakut, Saddo, Labrona, Other, Ruskig, and Angest. Here are some shots sent to us by Labrona that I thought I would post.

Freshman year is almost over and soon I’ll be leaving Philadelphia for NYC and London (just for the summer though). And yet, I still have finals to study for, so I didn’t get time to write about these things…

• Matt Small’s first LA solo show opened this week.
• Juxtapoz visited Deuce 7′s studio.
• I did a little interview for my friends at Primary Flight, but Anthony Lister’s answers to the same questions are much better.
• Ricky-Lee Gordon aka Freddy Sam painting in Woodstock, South Africa.
• If you are interested in buffing or Escif, you need to hear this story.
• Herakut, Bumblebee, Case and others at LeBasse Projects.
• A fantastic project from Liqen.

Derek Mehaffey aka Troy Lovegates aka Other

The latest exhibit at Show & Tell Gallery is Good Folk, a group show celebrating the gallery’s 2nd anniversary. Here’s the line up: Swoon, Monica Canilao, Jeremiah Maddock, Derek Mehaffey aka Troy Lovegates aka Other, Labrona and Troy Dugas. It’s an impressive line up of folk-art influenced art. Good Folks opened this week and runs through March 27th. Here’s a sample of what is in the show:

Labrona is participating in an upcoming show, Good Folks, at Show and Tell Gallery in Toronto opening on March 4. Other artists include Swoon, Other and Troy Dougas. It’s a good line-up and am looking forward to pictures from the opening.

We all know that graffiti and street art seems to slow down over the winter (except on Christmas), so you’ve got to respect Labrona for still getting out there and painting trains in the middle of a snowstorm.

Labrona sent over some photos of what he’s been up to recently. Labrona have some work at Moniker next month in the Campbarbossa booth, so if we’re lucky, maybe he’ll be over in London for that as well. Oh and the billboard below was painted along with Other, who is one of the three artists to contribute a design to a line of Vandalog t-shirts that I’ll be launching soon (more info in the coming weeks).
