Jorge Rodríguez-Gerada

This year’s edition of the Moniker Art Fair opens in Shoreditch this Thursday. This year, Moniker will be more focused than ever before on installations rather than traditional art fair gallery booths. Actually, the show will be entirely installations. Niels ‘Shoe’ Meulman, Ludo, Jorge Rodríguez-Gerada, C215, Remi/Rough, Ben Slow and others will be there.

Moniker opens on Thursday from 7-9pm, and will be open Friday and Saturday 11-7pm and Sunday 11-5pm.

More info on the Facebook event page.

Jorge Rodríguez-Gerada in Argentina and Barhain

Yousif Manama Bahrain. Painted in the city of Manama, Bahrain

Here are new beautiful new walls by Jorge Rodríguez-Gerada.

The wall shown above, “Yousif Manama Bahrain,” was made in Bahrain as part of Al Riwaq Art Space’s Alwan 338 festival. The portrait of one of Bahrain’s traditional fishermen is part of Rodríguez-Gerada’s Identity series. What I did not realize until now about the murals in that series is that they are temporary pieces, washing away in the rain. Here’s a timelapse of the piece being drawn and then fading away:

To learn more about the story behind “Yousif Manama Bahrain,” check Rodríguez-Gerada’s website.

Rodríguez-Gerada also recently painted this permanent mural in Buenos Aires, Argentina in memory of his father-in-law:

November 22nd, 2011 | By | No Comments »

Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada has been working on the street since the mid 1990′s, but is probably best known for his largescale black and white portraits. This interview with Fecal Face is a good introduction. This Thursday, he has a solo show opening in Barcelona at Galería Ignacio de Lassaletta (Rambla de Catalunya 47). The show will include both large charcoal drawings and sculptural works and promises to be a must-see event. It runs through January 17th. Here’s a hint of what to expect:

Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada Does Some Good in Spain

December 2nd, 2010 | By | No Comments »

Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada and the people of the Delta del Ebro area in Spain has done a huge outdoor piece to bring attention to the raging debate on climate change. The pictorial representation is that of a young named Gal·la, meant to represent the future generations who will have to live with what governments decide how to approach society’s negative impact on the environment.

The piece is part of a larger scale project, called 350 Earth, in which major outdoor public art pieces will be photographed around the world be satellites orbiting the planet. The campaign is led by author Bill McKibben.  More information can be found on 350.org.
