Weekend link-o-rama

Caroline and I were in Baltimore this week checking out Open Walls Baltimore. If you have the chance, definitely make a trip over there. Full posts about Baltimore coming soon. Point is, between Baltimore and moving this weekend, I’ve been lax this week. Things should return to normal on Wednesday or Thursday, but in the mean time, here’s what I’ve been meaning to post about:

An update on the Kidult/Marc Jacobs situation: Marc Jacobs have turned a photo of the vandalism (or maybe commissioned tag) into a t-shirt that they are selling for $689, and at least one has sold already.
Barry McGee’s show at Prism (his second, if you include his 2-man show with Phil Frost) has opened and is of course a must-see.
Okay yes, it’s another Shepard Fairey show with images we’ve seen before, but there are a few gems in there. Specifically, the painted printing plates.
A Basquiat painting went for over $16 million at a Phillips de Pury auction.
This piece by Phlegm is one of my favorites from him in a while.
Tes One and Bask collaborated on this dinosaur-themed mural in Florida.
This group show at Opera Gallery’s NYC location looks like a top-tier show for being a group show. Anthony Lister, Interesni Kazki, Roa, Mark Jenkins, Bast, Swoon, Faile, so many more…
Nychos and his crew paint some crazy stuff.
Afeura, a mural festival in Peru, is using Kickstarter to raise funds for the project. So far, Escif, Bastardilla, Desertor and Jade have signed on to painting at the festival.
In a move of crass commercialism reminding us that perhaps street art is dead, some artist made a really beautiful mural for the sole purpose of releasing a print of the same image.
Sonni (the guy who did that crazy boom box in Miami) has a show opening this month in New York.
Faile released some new prints on their website this week (sold out already of course), and intend to do so much more often from now on.
The DMV and 1984 crews pulled the crazy stunt of putting on a one-day illegal show in Paris on the day of the French elections.
Depoe is part of a two-man show opening on Saturday evening in New York. He has preview photos here.

Katowice Street Art Festival – part 1

Poland is playing host to some of the world’s most talented street artists and muralists for the Katowice Street Art Festival. From April 20th to the 29th, the festival will feature artists such as Escif, Hyuro, Mark Jenkins, Ludo, M-City, Olek, Roa, Moneyless, and many more. Here are a few of the pieces already in progress or completed. There are many more photos on the festival’s facebook page.

Ludo’s piece is a massive wheatpaste that incorporates paint. It looks great, but the one worry I have for this piece is that someone will probably have to paint over the eyesore that’s left when the paper weathers and inevitably comes down.

Weekend link-o-rama

While I spend my day at my other job explaining to people how a skee-ball tournament is art (seriously), I hope you’ll enjoy these newsbites from the past two weeks:

Almost everything I’ve seen of this show looks absolutely amazing: Saner’s solo in SF opening today.
You can listen to this conversation between Retna and his friend Med if you want a bit of insight into the Bowery/Houston mural, although it may just confuse things further in a good way.
Escif has been doing some really cool work lately and I’ve been neglecting to post it, but here’s one of my favorites.
Steve Powers and Faile designed potential covers for New York Magazine. Powers’ was used, but I’m a sucker for anything Faile so I definitely would have gone that route.
I meant to put this piece by Marco Sueño as the image for last week’s link-o-rama, but then my hostel didn’t have wifi so there was no link-o-rama.
Jaz took it up a notch with this mural in Lima.
S.Butterfly’s photos of the DMV crew show in Australia are finally online and the show looks great.
Eine painted the outside of Village Underground in London to raise awareness of the Homes for London campaign.
GrafRank is an attempt to graph the popularity of street artists and graffiti writers online using data from flickr. Interesting idea, but they need your feedback to make sure they are getting things right.
Juxtapoz is turning 18 and they are celebrating with a show later this month in Santa Monica. Artists include Retna, Shepard Fairey and Neckface.

Bien Urbain festival in Besançon, France

We’ve been posting images here and there from the Bien Urbain mural festival that took place in Besançon, France, but now photos of all the works are on flickr. Escif around France

Escif has been painting in France recently. This wall in in Besançon, the hometown of Pierre-Joseph Proudhon who was the first person to call himself an anarchist. Escif also painted at The 4th Wall festival in Niort, France.

Nuart 2011

This year, Vandalog hasn’t been covering the Nuart festival in Norway nearly as closely as we should. Some great work has gone up by a bunch of artists over the last few weeks. Between Nuart’s flickr page and the coverage at Arrested Motion though, the festival has been covered extensively elsewhere. Weekend link-o-rama

This week has been a lot of trying to get ahead on my work, because on Saturday evening I’m headed to New York City for the night. I’ll be checking out Flash at the Wooster Street Social Club. Here’s some stuff I missed covering over the last few days:

Bast has a show opening this weekend at Lazarides’ Newcastle location. Most of the work is in a completely (almost unrecognizably) new style.
Swoon’s installation at the ICA Boston is now on view.
Some big walls are being painted at the CityLeaks festival in Germany.
But none of those murals are quite as cool as Liqen’s latest.
555 Gallery in Detroit has finally settled their lawsuit and can display the Banksy that they stole off the streets, completely ruining the meaning of the piece.
Escif was at Fame Festival.
Kaws has a solo show open now in LA.
Fab5Freddy, Lee and Futura are together in a show at Subliminal Projects this weekend.
Ludo’s show in London is open now.
Twist aka Barry McGee and his partner Amaze get up big in Sydney.

Coming in October: Nuart 2011

With fall approaching (hopefully quickly after all the time I’ve been spending in 100 degree weather), another edition of Stavanger, Norway’s Nuart festival is just around the corner. This year, Nuart will break away from the murals that its become known for in favor of an event more like The Underbelly Project or Hell’s Half Acre: While there will still be some walls painted around the city, most of the festival will be indoors where artists will focus on painting directly on the walls of “seven abandoned 17x5x5 meter tunnels [and] a 50meter long access tunnel with an entrance hall equal in size to the cities largest gallery.”

And here’s this year’s artist line up… Dan Witz, David Choe, Herakut, Herbert Baglione, Escif, Hyuro, Tellas, Lucy McLauchlan, Dolk, Phlegm and Vhils.

Escif for Living Walls Atlanta

As Gaia mentioned, a bunch of artists were painting murals last week in Atlanta for the Atlanta leg of the Living Walls Conference. My personal favorite of the walls I’ve seen so far (I was there, but a few walls were still unfinished when I left town) is this one by Escif.
