Sam3 breaks a record for Living Walls

August 25th, 2011 | By | 10 Comments »

As far as I know, this mural by Sam3 is the tallest in America, if not the world. It was painted this month in Atlanta for the Living Walls Conference. Yes, there are murals and even illegal graffiti that cover more square-footage, but in terms of height, this 15-story-tall mural has everything I can think of beat. So is this really the tallest mural in America or possibly the world? Let me know in the comments if you know of a taller one.

Update: Thanks to a anonymous commenter, we’ve found out about this mural in Chicago, which is 200 feet tall, and the mural on the David Broderick Tower in Detroit. Looks like one of those murals holds the record of largest painted mural, for now.

bigger than the os gemeos at anhangabau in sao paulo?

Compared to those, sure Sam3′s is the tallest. None of those Banksy
pieces are 15-stories tall. But yes, large does not equal great. This
isn’t my favorite thing ever from Sam3, but I like it.

Just based on counting stories, yes, it’s probably bigger than that Os Gemeos, as well as the large Os G pieces in Berlin and NYC. But the one at anhangabau is close, so maybe counting based on stories isn’t the must accurate way to do it in that instance.

    There’s this: http://www.kuhl-us.com/fred/travels/2006-11-hi/08waikiki/slides/IMG_3423.html

And the Broderick Tower in Detroit: http://sburner.blogspot.com/2009/09/worlds-tallest-abandoned-structures.html

    And this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/iconeon/187001412/

Also, WW #67 is worth looking at: http://www.wylandfoundation.org/community-events-whaling-walls-2.shtml

Do you do research, or just make stuff up as you go??? I found all of this stuff from my phone in the last 5 minutes.

Thanks, even if you’re being a bit of a dick about it. I knew my research wasn’t exhaustive, which is why I mention that in the post and asked for input. When I first heard that Sam3 would be painting that spot, a couple of us at Living Walls spent about 10 minutes brainstorming and googling. The possible competition (for the world record) that we came up with was this mural – http://www.daim-onlineshop.de/content/produktdetail.aspx?a=14703&s=69 – since the height isn’t clear from that image. I also put out a call on twitter in case my research was insufficient, and none of the idea I got there topped this Sam3 wall. But I guess we were all looking for murals by street artists and graffiti artists rather than muralists. I guess one of those whale murals holds the record.

I wouldn’t consider the rainbow mural in Hawaii for this record though. It is a tile mural, rather than painted. I wasn’t clear, but I was specifically thinking about the largest painted mural.
