Pics: Lush’s show in LA

July 23rd, 2011 | By | 6 Comments »

Lush‘s LA show opened last week and it looks like he’s done it again. Some great pieces in this show making fun of street art and graffiti, specifically taking aim at Banksy and Keith Haring. Here are a few of my favorites.

Parody of Keith Haring

And check out many more photos on Juxtapoz.

“…looks like he’s done it again. Some great pieces…”

Wow. Are you kidding me?! This “show” was utter garbage. We drove all of
the way from Venice Beach to earnestly cover the “opening” for our site. We now want
to be reimbursed for gasoline. Laugh my ass off. The only saving grace
was that there wasn’t any traffic that day because it was Carmageddon.
LUSH, you are an inept and predictable satirist. Please take the plane back to Australia with your $3 Banksy imitation. What a poor effort
and insult to the graff/street-art lemmings that bought into the hype
and rushed to this opening (including us). I couldn’t decide if LUSH
lacks the talent/acumen or the effort. I’m guessing talent and intellect because there WAS a decent amount of half-hearted detritus that was presented and displayed. And you can’t even try to put the work and under the category of irony or satire because it is was just so bad. Utter crap that couldn’t be a commentary on the mechanics of having an exhibition or the state of observing street art. Marcel Duchamp is rolling over in his grave. Weak ass sh*t, Son.
    Ugh.

I will give MUSH this, there were a lot of ditto-heads there that were walking around and nodding their heads. But that is just the current status of art and culture, people don’t know what is good anymore. I mean, awful pop stars have millions of followers. Why are people such trendoids and hypebeasts? They hear “street art” and they’re completely with it without any sort of discerning taste. I’m generalizing here, but you get the point. I dunno, maybe there were other people there who were “underwhelmed” also, but taking a topical temperature reading, the reviews were mostly positive(?). Then again, not to sound like an elitist, but, most people are simpletons.

I don’t want to get ad hominem, but that “show” was so unintentionally bad that it was insulting (not in a good way). It was an obvious joke that was poorly executed.

Vandalog/RJ, thank you for letting us unload on your site (we’ve been
holding back and didn’t want to give this show any cred on our site),
but we’re disappointed with the awful show and your reaction. You’re
based in Pennsylvania, right? Did you actually attend? RJ, you have a really good site and I wish you would be more curatorial/editorial/critical with the content you feature on this site. You don’t have to feature ALL street art, just the best. But that is just by arrogant opinion.

Actually, the interview you did with MUSH was more interesting than any
of the “stuff” at Hold Up Art. Hold Up Art, you should be ashamed of
yourselves; especially with how smug the presentation and “curation” of
    that “show” was. Amateurs.

    Rant over.

you don’t tag, paint or look at graffiti on a regular basis, but all out of a sudden you want to step up to say something about it. wtf is wrong with you?
